obviously since this is fresh install you want i3 to copy it's config to your home folder.

I don't see the problem

You must have installed the i3 symbols package op.that's why its all in symbols. Install the regular i3 package

I think the issue resides in i3, not arch. I experienced this as well a couple of times and i end up reinstalling every time and it just werks.

Looks normal... It's arch... Arch is a tech support emulator for when you want weird errors nobody has seen before and to stretch your skills and imagination when you try to fix them.

Nothing unusual here... I will just give you the answer that anyone will give you when you get trouble in arch.

READ THE WIKI (the wiki won't have a solution for this of course, but it is the only advice you will likely get)
