That was the phrase google chrome devs said when they were questioned about why google chrome used so much ram.

>Unused RAM is wasted RAM.
So why haven't you written an operating system that uses all RAM at all times?
>>58386232
Why haven't you built a solar panel with 100% efficiency?
>>58386310
Because it's impossible, just as it's impossible to write an operating system that lets you do anything of worth while using up all RAM.
Unused RAM is not wasted RAM. Unused RAM is free RAM that allows other programs to function. The idea that unused RAM is wasted only encourages shoddy programming that creates applications that do less with more resources instead of doing more with fewer resources.
>>58386331
>Because it's impossible, just as it's impossible to write an operating system that lets you do anything of worth while using up all RAM.
And do you agree that unused energy is wasted energy when it comes to solar panel design? Just because it's impossible to be 100% efficient doesn't somehow change the fact that a 90% efficient system wastes 10%.
>The idea that unused RAM is wasted only encourages shoddy programming that creates applications that do less with more resources instead of doing more with fewer resources.
That's not what “unused RAM is wasted RAM” means. “unused RAM is wasted RAM” is meant to get people to understand that disk caching is good, not bad.
>>58386140
Its still the old one
>>58386356
>And do you agree that unused energy is wasted energy when it comes to solar panel design?
No. The energy is not being wasted because the energy has other applications elsewhere. The sun's energy covers an extremely large swath of the Earth and is necessary for life.
>“unused RAM is wasted RAM” is meant to get people to understand that disk caching is good, not bad.
RAM is not caching to disk, it is caching to volatile storage. A program should strive to only ever use as many resources as it needs for the task it sets out to accomplish. The remaining resources can be used for other programs that should be designed in a similar fashion. Do more with less, not less with more. Work smarter, not harder.

Unused ram is wasted ram means overall you fucking faggot. Learn more then begin posting here.
It means if your OS is NOT using ram to cache programS (not 1 shitty program using all your ram) then those programs are cached and the ram is "used" but can be freed to use by another process at any time thus it is inefficient for an OS to waste any ram after its ram worth of programs have been loaded you fucking retard.
