What is your hostname /g/? I am looking for inspirations. Right now, I am leaning towards characters in Greek mythology.

Eww, literally gay, all gayreeks today are either descended from gay assfucking or mongolian rape babies.
Usually the distro name.

Hachi-Roku
I'm doing moons of Jupiter for all of my VMs I VNC into from my main server, predictably named Jupiter. Jupiter has a shitload of moons so you won't run out.

Location / Role / Platform / OS VER / Function / Number
SEASW12R2DC01 (SEAttle / Windows / 2012 R2 / Domain Controller 01

Domains are either region (NA/SA/LA/EMEA) or Microsoft code names (Microsoft-ish shop, deal with it) like Viridian (Hyper-V testhing), Monad (PowerShell automation) or Threshold (Server 2016 deployment project).

>What is your hostname /g/?
I use single letter names:
p: my primary workstation
s: my secondary machine, which I use for backups and emergency purposes
t: the television HTPC with a 52" screen
n: a notebook (Thinkpad T420)
b: my wife's machine (her first name begins with "b")
r: the Raspberry Pi that's deployed and running 24/7
For the other Raspberry Pis, I use "r" followed by the model number (1, 2, or 3), followed by "a", "b", "c", etc. if necessary. For example, "r3a", "r3b", etc.
All machines run Linux.
I simply use /etc/hosts for the naming, so here's the top of my standard /etc/hosts file that's deployed on every machine.192.168.0.2 p
192.168.0.3 s
192.168.0.4 t
192.168.0.5 b
192.168.0.6 r r3a
192.168.0.7 n
192.168.0.21 r1
192.168.0.22 r2
192.168.0.23 r3b
etc.
I use names beginning with "a" for any machine that uses DHCP (like all my VMs). So further down in my /etc/hosts file I have the following 256 lines:192.168.0.0 a0
192.168.0.1 a1
192.168.0.2 a2
192.168.0.3 a3
192.168.0.4 a4
192.168.0.5 a5
192.168.0.6 a6
192.168.0.7 a7
...
192.168.0.252 a252
192.168.0.253 a253
192.168.0.254 a254
192.168.0.255 a255
(Note that "a0" is very handy for things like "nmap a0/24" to get a full status report.)

I have an IPv6-only LAN with local name resolution through unbound on my freebsd router (that also handles central adblocking for my entire network through void-zones-tools) with the following format: hostname.domain.tld and individual computers named after famous computers in scifi literature, such as deepthought (Hitchhikers Guide by Douglas Adams), solace (Callahans by Spider Robinson), multivac (several Isaac Asimov books), minerva (Time Enough For Love by Robert Heinlein), enigma (short for Engine for the Neutralising of Information by the Generation of Miasmic Alphabets, from Discworld), and so forth - too many computers to list here.

Tyrone's weed shack.
I like using placeholder names as hostnames. Always female names though.
My main computer is creatively named Alice.
Laptop is Beatrice.
Phone is Catherine.
Router is Rachel.
And the various Raspberry Pis I have scattered across my house all start with N.
Mainly the noble gasses, but also just elements I like (Chem major), I might move onto the moons of planets but I suppose that's just Greek mythology.
>>58384855
Why would you do that? Hostnames are supposed to be easy to remember and type, it would make more sense to use only the function and number. Including things that are going to change (Like OS version) seems like a fine way to make life difficult.
