Anyone have advice on harvesting ink from printer cartridges? My old printer died (heads are badly clogged) and I'd like to reuse what ink is left in my other printer. Both are same brands (Epson) but different models.

Can I just pierce the old, syringe it out, then pump & plug it in the new one.

Ive got a 750 GB hard disk that is reporting as 698 GB to everything except gpart.fdisk shows the size as 698 GB but having 750 million bytes.I've tested it with seatools and it passed all the tests. When I look at the drive information on seatools, it shows drive capacity as 750.16 GB / 698.64GiB. I know for sure that it used to report the full 750, so it's not mislabeled. I suspect it may have bad sectors, but the surface test is a quarter of the way through and hasn't found anything so far.

Any ideas?

No, you're retarded. And probably not, unless you're actually trying to do something RAM-intensive that's not going as quickly as you'd like (media editing mostly)

It sounds to me like you just want an excuse to tinker. Don't try to satisfy that urge on a laptop, it doesn't usually end well. Upgrading your RAM won't hurt, but you'd be better off spending that money on parts for a desktop

Theres this particular exercise on this book (Cprimer) that requires me to do:

1. Using command line arguments open a file and search for specified char occurrences in the file.

argv[1] being the file and argv[2] being the character to find.

I thought I had everything cover up but now there's some things I don't understand.

So the standard is that I will read a character into a int or char variable from my file and then compare it to argv[2].

But this doesn't work.

I also realized that I couldn't just ''print'' argv[2] as a character, else I get weird values. I need to use printf("%s"...) to print it as if it was a string, which may as well could be.

I guess where I am trying to get here is that I don't really know whats wrong here.

Comparing the read character C from the file with the command line argument argv[2] doesn't give me any results.

Care to explain?

tips on keeping cpu socket temperatures low?
is it entirely dependent on your cpu cooler, or are there other things you can do to lower them? my cpu and other temperatures are fine, well within safe ranges.
mobo is M5A99X EVO R2.0(6+2 power phase), cpu is amd fx-8350 @ 4.5ghz, stock voltage. 212 evo air cooler. two case fans blowing out, the evo is pointed to blow the air out of one of the case fans. case is nzxt 210 elite.
i notice during stress testing that my cpu generally caps at a safe temperature(around 54c), but my socket temp will keep climbing. highest ive seen it go was 67c, max safe temp for it is 72c.
in real world scenarios this is not really a problem since i wont be under 100% load for an hour, but im still a bit concerned.
im wondering if my problem could be airflow related? i have a sapphire rx 480, and that card is fucking HUGE.
ive read of some users attaching tiny fans to the back of their cpu socket like pic related. does that actually work? any other things like that i could do?

What did I break this time?

Zoomplayer started giving me screens like this when I try to play certain video files, but not others. Seems not to be filetype-dependent; for example, some .mkv files play fine while others give pic related. Any ideas on what I did or how to fix it?

I suspect a Windicks Update I installed last night is to blame, but I'm having no luck rolling it back since q.) the update doesn't appear in the list of updates that can be uninstalled, though it DOES appear in the update history list, and 2.) there's no restore point for it (even though I saw the cunting thing say "create restore point" while it was installing.

Please advise.

I installed Arch on a Lenovo y700.

When I click on images that execute javascript like pic related, nothing happens. It works if the script is being executed by a link though.

I attempted it on a Windows partition with no issue. I also tried it on different browsers, but nothing happened.

On older versions of Windows prior to 10 there was a "search" function that allowed you to type in a keyword and it would search your PC for all files, images, videos etc with that word in it.

On Windows 10 Cortana doesn't seem to do this unless it's the exact phrase, e.g, if I search "baseb" it will only look for files named exactly that, rather than everything with that phrase including "baseball".

Is there any way to get Cortana to work like the old search, or install the old search?

I have a shitload of 2TB SAS drives and I have been trying to find an economical, minimum 4 bay NAS with SAS support. Apparently, these are rare as rockinghorse shit, and priced about the same.

Anyone got a protip on a sub $450 USD, SAS NAS? If not, whats a nice power efficient chipset I can build around? I'm sure I can find a plain old desktop case to build into if all else fails, and I have a bunch of SAS cards for the purpose as well if needed.

If I were to use Audacity to record audio that's streaming to my PC, would it be as high quality as the source or is it entirely dependent on how my PC/audio equipment processes it?
>>
>>58385306
If you're using your line in, yes, hardware will be a factor. If you're capturing sound directly via the audio driver (reads; recording sounds from a program or youtube) then no. Under that circumstance your recording will only be as good as the source.

making something look good/cool
can be insulting
but can also mean making shit look clean, without bloat, with fitting colors, themes, icons, so its not ugly mess

usually apply to linux desktop enviroment, windows with use of rainlendar, or android home screen

the term comes from asians, who put large spoilers on their hondas and mitsubishi, to make them look cool rather than to improve driving

so since they are rice eaters, its called ricing

Hello /g/, I need to program a little thing in Java where you have to ask a number simultaneously in the Console and via Swing.

I already have a method to ask the number via console, I already a method to ask the number via Swing, but it's when I need to combine the two it doesn't work well.

I think I need to have a thread where the console asks it, a thread where Swing asks it... and then ?
>>
>>58387421
it's a .NET application written in VB syntax using an old framework.
Try running it with mono.
>>
>>58387435
What are you supposed to do with those two numbers?

Anyway, you already have a thread running, namely the main thread. So you only need to create an additional thread, either for the console or for swing.

The easiest way to do this is to extend Thread and to implement a method call run() on your thread class.
>>
>>58387456
>What are you supposed to do with those two numbers?
Pass it to the rest of the application.
Basically if the Swing answer first, then it the main thread continue with the number it gave.
If the console answer first, then the thread continue with the number the Console gave.

Just throwing around the concept in my brain to see if it would actually be worth it.

Would there be any benefit to having one "mainframe supercomputer" and multiple desktops around the house? The thinking is that each person in the house would have a login they could use to access the mainframe from any desktop. Wireless desktops could be used for "personal means" while you could have larger screens be "televisions" for hulu, amazon video, youtube, etc (not just limited to that of course).
The reasoning would be that you would spend less money on personal equipment, allowing you to spend more for cream-of-the-crop tech for the mainframe.
Would it save money? Would it be efficient? Or would it be better for each person to have their own laptops, tvs, etc.
>>
>>58388757
What you're proposing are terminal services sessions or, in a more modern implementation, VDI.

These are both commonly used in business IT. Whether there is any benefit to you depends on how important you feel it is to have consistent user experience across different devices and whether you have a desire to make those devices highly secured from their users (hence low maintainance).
>>
>>58388553
Yes, but likely not worth it. Hyperthreading is ~+20% in a few use cases. For the most part you're just looking at the 200MHz difference in base speed and 400MHz in turbo. I wouldn't value the package at more than $40 or so over the i5, and I do a ton of encoding which gets the most out of hyperthreading.
So if you can sell the i5 for $40 less than you can purchase the Xeon (which you can't unless you're finding a Xeon for $180 or so), then go for it. If you're thinking of spending $250 for the Xeon and just shelving the i5... that's a waste of $250. You're better off putting that money towards a 6700k/7700k/Ryzen system to get yourself more IPC and overclockability, which may net you a solid +40% before hyperthreading.

No

Usually the hypervisor allows different forms of NIC sharing, for example putting host and guest on different VLANs, putting guest behind NAT, etc.

You should find out which type suits your needs best.

I want to build a PC but don't want to spend alot

The only reason why I want to build is because it seems like you can get more bang for your buck if you build it yourself

I'm not big on gaming but I do like movies and I already have the sound system and monitors so I just need a new tower

Any suggestions?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_He-FBS06Y This guy built one mostly for gaming but it's under 400 and seems pretty simple
>>
>>58388789
I guess my main concern would be whether or not there would be enough processing power for everyone. I use photoshop and 3d modeling software a lot, and since it's quite taxing on the graphics card, processor, and ram, I'm worried it might hinder performance for anyone else connected. However, I feel that if there aren't a lot of personal equipment to constantly upgrade or replace, it would be more bang-for-your-buck to purchase high-grade materials that could handle 3d programs as well as other things at the same time.

i just finished making one for someone

tried a few tools, what a pain in the ass it was

windows update doesn't even work on windows 7 ootb right now, it's broken until you manually install one or two updates

here's a few notes i made;
sysprep fails;
>net stop wmpnetworksvc
windows update doesn't werk;
>install Windows6.1-KB3102810-x64.msu
enter audit mode during OOBE
>ctrl+shift+f3 on "make new user" screen

and steps/tools;
- downloaded most updates with wsusoffline
- integrated those with NTLite, tried wintoolkit, but it was slow as shit and caused a couple bad iso's, ended up only using it for its WIM capturing tool
- install the result into a VM and update it further, in audit mode (you can install other software here, too, if you like)
- run sysprep (oobe/generalize) and shutdown
- capture that installation into a WIM using wintoolkit, and use it as a replacement "install.wim" on the windows dvd

>>
>>58389145
oh, forgot to add, if you have a full version of NTLite, be sure to tick "updates cleanup" on the last step, it will remove update backups, which will account for a significant portion of your disk after installing all those updates
who the fuck uninstalls updates, anyway

They're returns, and they have the same warranty as new. On some sales you can pick up XPS' with i7's for $550. You can get an Inspiron with an i5 for under $400 every day of the week. They have a sale about once a month though. I think their last one ended yesterday, so you might have to wait a bit for the next.

Are there any Linux panels(/DEs) similar to Windows taskbar(/DE)?

The specific functionalities I want are pinning (not seperate application launchers), stacking seperate windows on one icon, hovering over the icon to see previews of the open windows.

The closest I've found is Budgie from Solus, but it doesn't have the stacking nor the preview. I can live without previews, but stacking is important.

Internal HDDs or External HDDs as a data storage solution?
I know external = internal + enclosure.
But is there any advantage of external hdd over internal one?
Especially regarding failure rate, and durability.
Also is it true that HDD of smaller form factor is more prone to fail than larger one?
>>
>>58390192
Internal are more reliable.

Mobility.

No, 1TB is the sweetspot, more than that will decrease reliability because it will use multiple platters.

Pic related, but the encryption options.

Also, im wondering if I can find a way to Reuse my existing Windows 10 Licence/key for my New computer. I bought windows 8 a few years ago, and Upgraded to Windows 10. if this is not possible or would ruin my existing computer im just gonna buy it from Kinguin.

Alright what the fuck are you doing.

You grab the ISO, make it bootable with rufus, use MSI Tools ADD usb 3.0 drivers option to add USB and AHCI drivers then you boot from it.

Where are you fucking up?
>>
>>58390434
If ita not broken dont fix it.

Install OS first to check everything is working correctly.
Probably not since keys are usually OEM and can be uses only once.
>>
>>58390454
Oh, that's what you meant, I'm an idiot, before I downloaded the tool I assumed I would be remaking the bootatable USB from scratch. Just adding the drivers makes a lot more sense to me, I apologize for being as bad with computers as an elderly grandmother. I'm using the MSI Smart Tool now.

I don't know if this is the place to ask, but is there any way to download the complete version of a book from Google Book's web-based reserve for free?

There's this textbook (Digital Systems Design using VHDL - Roth) I need for a course, but the prof wants us to use the 3rd edition, which apparently just came out. And Google Books is the only place I can find a digital version of that textbook.
>>
>>58390257

MStookit would be a better idea but both work almost the same way.
Also why download it from TPB when you can download it from the original source.
>>
>>58390434
It would definitely be possible to use your windows 8 key for window 8 on your new pc. For 10, you best bet would be to try linking it to your microsoft account, then see if it will transfer. If it does not, call the activation hotline and claim you're replacing a broken motherboard
>>
>>58390454
>>58390500
I think I don't know what I'm doing at all. I took the bootable USB, opened the MSI tool, picked "Add USB drivers," chose the USB, and it gave me a "Success!" after doing all the operations, but it still doesn't recognize the USB when I boot from it and enter the Windows 7 installation, saying I don't have the necessary drivers.

When I try making a new partition it says it also can't be used because "The selected disk is of the GPT partition style." How bad did I just fuck up? I left the recovery disk un-deleted just in case, do I need to actually delete all of them for the disk to be formatted in a different partition style? Unless you jailbreak your phone and alter the software, there is pretty much no way for you to actually make your phone secure. Apple has implemented backdoors to everything you can imagine, and they would have had to do it even if they didn't want to; Every company that wants to put their software on the market has to give the NSA some sort of way to read through every single user's data.
