GNU is bash, the GNU coreutils, glibc, gnutls, nano, ed, emacs, and some shit nobody cares about. In the 90s, this together with linux made up the core OS. A lot of basic system functions like ACPI and device management were largely put on shell scripts written in bash calling the GNU coreutils. Linux was also a lot smaller than it is today, despite still being a monolithic kernel. You didn't have anyone encrypting their whole disk using the kernel, or booting the kernel alone without a bootloader, etc, so its role was seen as minor compared to GNU. Also, many machines did not run X, so GNU was definitely the default interface as well.

In 2017, the core running OS is linux, systemd, and some GNU libraries that systemd depends on. Everything else is fluff. You only need linux, systemd, and some select parts of GNU to have a fully functioning operating system ready to accept and run any variety of additional software, and most of the functions and code of the OS is on the systemd side. Most machines run X, and although some us a GNU interface, others use nonGNU interfaces, so X is sooner considered part of the OS than the GNU interface on top of it. Also wayland is nonGNU. Because so much of the OS is neither GNU nor Linux we just call it "Linux" and fossfags get butthurt because they think it doesn't spotlight their communist philosophy enough.

That was a serious question, lads.
Typical /g/ users simply CANNOT define neither, and this makes me sad.

just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Linux is shorthand for Linux Mint, the operating system

GNU is jewish slang for "Anti Freedom"

Most people using non-systemd distros are also eschewing other GNU/parts because they realized that they too are bloated in the same way systemd is, so saying alternatives exist isn't much of an argument in favor of GNU deserving half as much recognition as it used to.

GNU = Botnet
Linux = Botnet
Windows = Botnet
MacOS = Botnet
Botnet = Botnet

Linux is the kernel.
GNU is the license.
GNU + Linux is the operating system.
"Linux Mint" is the distro name. Distro is not an operating system itself

Linux is an operating system. GNU is a non-profit organization. GPL is a license for freeware. /thread.
