What kind of sorcery is this?
>>

That's about normal for a fresh lxde. The problem I have is the insane usage from my browser.
>>
Looks ordinary.

It doesn't do shit it doesn't need to.
>>
>>58369840
>It doesn't do shit it doesn't need to.
which means it does as much UI shit as OSes from late 1990s.

>>58369809
enjoy your pleb-as-possible computing experience.
>>
>>58369809
Why did you chose LXDE if you wanted nice DE?
It can be customizable but it's primarily made to run on toasters.
>>
i have an old 2gb ram intel core2duo shit top and it runs MATE really well, i consider MATE to be pretty no frills but you can still customize it if that's your thing (it's def not mine)

i thought that LXDE was pretty dead

enjoy the diagonal screen tearing

it has no compositor

BS

my last SLIM XP SP3 install used ~190MB ram after boot

Go back to windows 10 were they can't even program good transperancy
>>

Linux is Windows 3.1 tier. You still have to drop to the command line to do pretty much anything. Linux should take 8MB MAX.

Lubuntu is great. It is what I use. But I'm sure several other distros can so the same.

>>58370513
>enjoy the diagonal screen tearing
This has been driving me crazy. But my understanding is that Lubuntu is supposed to be bare bones (lightweight) out of the box.

Weird thing is that I only see the screen tearing when I watch a vid using the web browser (FF or chromium). If I stream the vid to MPV then there is no tearing. I came really close to installing a compositor but decided not to because everything goes to MPV. But I am still curious as to why it only happens within a web browser.

It's literally openbox + some small GTK panels. Why would it have to use insane amounts of RAM?
>>

anon the fuck does modern even mean? Does it mean it more ram? In that case i do not like modern
>>

Just install compton, it works fine on all GPUs

tfw some pajeete thinks that if system uses more resources, then it's more modern.

Yeah, like telemetry.

The amount of stupid people in this board is unbelievable...

This is what I don't understand.
You install a lightweight DE.
Then you find workarounds for all the stuff it doesn't do.
When I think modern window managers, it does stuff like use the GPU to draw windows. This way, your computer doesn't lag when you resize a window and it doesn't tear when you play a video.
That bothers me a lot more than having to use 50mb more RAM.
>>
>>58370713
>timestamp
What the fuck are you talking about? You think MS-DOS 6.2 is now going to take 1GB because it's 2017?

>22MB CLI
Jesus Christ, that shouldn't be over 256k.

I understand what you are saying. But people who are typically running "lightweight" distros like Lubuntu aren't concerned about playing a fullscreen video properly or how a window lags when you resize it. They are concerned about accomplishing basic tasks on god-awful hardware. At least this is my understanding of their philosophy.

I started playing around with linux a couple of years ago. I had two computers: One with 256MB RAM and the other with less than 512MB RAM. Debian LXDE and Lubuntu ran great on them. I wasn't concerned about screen tearing. I wanted hardware that I could use Maxima, beginner tier programming (Python/Numpy), and basic web browsing.

But even now with slightly better hardware I still use Lubuntu. I'm accustomed to it and it is easy enough to install something if I need it. The only reason I would install a compositor now is for QT/pyside programming (I would need it for transparency).
