Just got done doing a fresh install of windows after getting a new motherboard, CPU, and Ram and the temps have me a bit worried.

Should I be worried? On my last setup they never went above 40C most of the time.

I'm also downloading the windows update shits because it seems like there's a lot of functionality missing from my computer.

My trusty Nexus 5 which worked without issues on the same old cm11 rom for 2 years shat itself this morning. It rebooted without reason and apparently app configurations for most non system apps were lost, it was low on space (dunno if that had anything to do) and now had about .5gb extra free. The real problem is wifi won't work now, if I reflash the kernel zip from recovery it works again for a while but dies a few minutes after, staying greyed out. This seems to be a semi common issue with this phone and there are like 20 possible fixes so im asking here first. Anyone had this problem before? I have my original efs backup and mac address noted down, im rooted too, currently backing up everything to reflash rom in hopes it works.

Also anyone here uses Colornote? there are some things i'd really like back but there's nothing were autobackups should be, on phones with fat32 filesystem you could just run recuva and have a chance of recovery but this is the first time I have something like this happen on android on whatever filesystem it uses, any app for this?

I wouldent really call it stupid , but anywho.. I have a few "unlimited" LTE plans , and I recently noticed they were slowing some of the traffic on one of my lines when I "tether".. Supposedly, more modern Android OSs have added a "feature" that reports to the carrier if the phone is tethering , and what kind of user agent it has. Anyone know more about this? I need to completely remove it from my os, fuck that shit.

Also, if that doenst work, is there any way I could get around this if I were to pick up a sierra wireless and set it up to route my data through a VPN?

Anyone else here use their phone line as their main connection to internet? I live out in the middle of nowhere , so it is really my only option.

I think Comcast is throtteling me connecting to VPN servers. I get like 2mb down on a torrent, but then when i connect to a VPN (I tried 2, bolehvpn and cactusvpn) the speed goes to absolute shit. Speedtest gives me 10mb down ordinarily, but then when on a vpn it gets down to fucking .5mbps.

Any way to work around this?

(only fast speed provider in my area so inb4 change ISP)
>>
>>58350750
Windows 7 will probably work fine for ya. If not, it's really easy to go back to 8. You could also use a tool like classicshell to make 8 more like 7. And in 10 you can disable updates with a registry tweak or tools like ultimate tweaker
>>
>>58350848
yeah i installed os on the ssd, made the mistake of installing some programs on their too because i didn't see the customize button. oh well, i uninstalled the programs now, reinstalled on the non ssd drive. ssd is only for the os.

this may be another stupid question, but install the klite codec pack on the sata drive, correct?

I have a really simple problem, but it seems like it requires a complex solution. I can't think of it, but I really need assistance.

>notice the "N" in the word "New"

I'm trying to find a way to change the color of only part of the letter in any kind of desktop publishing application. Is there a way to edit the color of Times New Roman font rather than the whole letter?

>I'm trying to get the effect of that N in the word New, where it contrasts like that in black and white in this particular font

Can someone figure out a solution? Thanks.
>>
>>58351179
fonts don't have color

they are a set of vectors

but you could find a way to have a rectangle overlay which reverses the colors in that given area like your image
>>
>>58351163
Torrents don't always work very well on VPNs. It depends on a lot of factors. Try checking out forums for your vpn or emailing support. They might have a solution for you, and they should know the specific technical issues of your situation better than anyone. If all else fails try checking with comcast and see if they are limiting traffic.

It's stores entries in a flash chip on board the motherboard.
The UEFI just scans EFI partitions for bootable systems, and adds them to the list.
It depends on the system, some are cleared on CMOS reset, some are cleared on "default settings"

there is an app that cleans then moves your cache to tmpfs (essentially the RAM) so it won't eat 'disk' space. Name's "Cache fixer" IIRC.

>>
>>58357063
Nevermind, --vo=vaapi worked.
>>
>>58357174
Yea I had the same thought. I wasn't even looking at Apple because I have nothing else related to it and I've never used it.

Work would be financing or accounting type stuff.

If it helps, the money is coming from my 529. That means I can only spend the money on "education". I'm a graduating senior and I have $6600 left in it, but I'm actually done with paying for college. So I was going to spend it on my books (probably about $300) for the last semester and a new laptop. But there's just no way I'll blow more than $1500 on a laptop.

I was thinking something around $800 will be reasonable. I like reliability, simplicity, and adaptability in my technology. But as I said, I don't know dick about the laptop market.

>>
>>58357322
Yeah, $800 usually goes a long way. I'd look for a 256gb SSD+1tb hdd or maybe a 512 SSD. IPS is nice; you don't realize how washed out normal screens are until you step it up. Stepping up to 1440p (2k) resolution is nice because it translates into more screen real estate, so you can see much more of webpages/documents at once. 4k is overkill on laptops but doesn't really hurt (aside from battery life) since you can turn the resolution down. Also backlit keyboards are nice. Make sure whatever you get has a keyboard and trackpad you like. Go to a bestbuy or something and try it out if you can. Get a proccessor that ends in "HQ", otherwise even i7's will usually just be dual cores. If you decide to take gaming in consideration, be aware that the 10xx generation is WAY beyond the 9xx cards, as they're now sticking more or less desktop cards in there and just downclocking them a bit.

I'd start here:

So I live on the 3rd floor of an apartment and the 1st floor has a router which is a TP-Link AC1200 where my own computer has a TP-Link PCI Express adapter AC1300

For some reason, the other computer in my room has MUCH better internet connection than mine despite being a USB AC1000 adapter.

I switched the locations of both computers on the 3rd floor and even then, my internet is still slower.

By that assumption, something is wrong with my computer considering for example, I cannot play Overwatch without rubberbanding to death. Speedtests also show it slow as balls.

Yes there are trackers you can order online. There are dozens online. You can even get audio recording. If you are really tech retarded you can hire a PI

Now my question: Is bluetooth on Windows 8.1 basically useless?
I have bluetooth on my wifi card and it's enabled, drivers work etc. but when it connects to my phone it can't transfer any files. I found out it's like a security thing with a very complex workaround. So useless there.

Now I'm trying to connect my portable speaker and Windows can't even find the device. Spent like ten minutes trying. Refreshing, restarting etc but never showed up.

1.) Why is bluetooth so fucking retarded
2.) Why is it even more retarded on Windows PC?

If I sent back a motherboard to MSI and ordered a replacement, they would only send a replacement if they confirmed that the original motherboard was broken, right?
>>
>>58359803
not true, you can get a decently specced refurbished business grade laptop for around four hundred
>>
>>58359894
Am I really going to notice the difference when the most intensive thing I'm going to do on it is playing mediocre steam games? Does it justify paying 1300 when I could pay 800? Also did they fix that adware shit?

So, I did a bit of shopping and came around to this

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-power-pavilion-laptop--15t-x7p44av-1

Or

http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/Laptops/hp-power-pavilion-laptop----17t-x7n62av-1

Thoughts on these? They have a few things I was looking for
>i5 quad core
>1920x1080
>backlit keyboard
>nvidia 10 series 4gb
The 17" also has a DVD drive which I would prefer to have but the laptop's price is $50 more expensive compared to the 15". I'd delete McAfee and friends.
>>
>>58359947
>HP
no
>>
>>58359919
The system is called RMA; they only send you a new part once the one they get in has been confirmed broken in a way that they can't prove isn't covered by RMA.

>>58359934
True, refurbished is always an option.

>>58359938
You were talking about quality which I took to mean thermal and build quality. If your targets are that low, you can probably use Acer.
>>
>>58359947
Is there a reason you need it to be so new? If you wanted, you can get a used thinkpad, throws an SSD and some more ram in it and you'll be good to go.

t. paid a total of $320 for a T420 with i7, 6GB RAM, and 512GB 850 evo
>>
>>58359956
Yes, but what flaw in the models I posted holds you back from recommending them?
>>
I have a c++ code that I wrote in a custom text editor, that I'm compiling from the cmd with VS using the "cl" command.

How do I change the Icon of the exe file that the compiler outputs? I have my .rc file, how do I add/link it to my project?

I can't just open the project in Visual Studio and change it from there because I don't have an actual VS project.

Why do most people on /g/ think this is not funny? I think there are really funny ones.

Acer doesn't have good thermal or build quality.

>>58360005
I'm one of those hold-offs, I've been on irc since the late 80s and I'm not stopping now. That said, I do find it funny.
>>
>>58359955
Why?

>>58359973
Not really. It's just something I was looking at. I have the money to use but I would prefer to keep it under $1000.

dir /ab /b => filename.txt

Or just dir /b => filename.txt if you want to include files too. You can check dir /? for other options if you want to tweak it.

Oh whooops I meant

dir /ad /b => filename.txt

Not /ab

I RMA'd my MSI mobo. I just got the new one and I'm afraid this one is DOA too

Fuck

HP's consumer line is utter trash.
>>
>>58360112
Why is that? Bad QC? Any specific problems? Any other brand recommendations?

I don't quite understand. Where do I put that?

My PC which is 6 years old has been running nonstop for approx 4 days now. Is this bad?

I just got windows update to finish checking for updates on my vista machine but I have no idea what I did to make it work.

Did they ever figure out the root cause of the checking for updates bug?
>>
>>58360032
Doesn't Dell? The XPS is recommended often here.
>>
>>58360090
RMA again. They can require you to do it up to 6 times.

>>58360190
I worked for Dell once - they get a LOT of RMA on their equipment.
>>
>>58360200
>RMA again
fuck my life. Okay thanks
>>
>>58360180
Generally electronics that've passed their initial burn-in period (usually 6 months) will survive for a long time. That said, when it does break, expect it to be the capasitors.

>>58360211
Such is the life of a consumer.
>>
>>58360227
Or bad BGA solder joints.
>>
>>58360262
Theoretically, but capasitors are where cheap motherboard manefacturers save a lot of money.
>>
>>58360145
Get a Dell Latitude
>>
>>58360277
Most failures I've had after 5 years was down to BGA balls fracturing due to gravitational stresses.
>>
Is it worth building your own PC if you're not into video games and mainly use it as an internet machine?

The most intensive things I use my computer for are encoding webms and watching films. Is it more economic for someone like me to buy a prebuilt computer or is it /always/ better to build your own?
>>
is SVP still the best option for interpolated 60fps?
>>
>>58360153
Command prompt. Easiest way is simply to go to the folder you want to do it for, hold shift, right click on empty space, open command window here. Can also enter cmd in search or run bars.
>>
>>58360306
>Is it more economic
What do you mean?

Is it cheaper? Generally yes. Labor costs money. But doing it yourself costs time and knowing how to put things together correctly.
Is it better? If it's the same parts, it isn't better.
If you like building things and doing puzzles, I'd say build it. If don't like that, then buy it.
>>
>>58360306
No. Get a chromebook.

>>58360321
Stop interpolating video, it looks fucking awful.
>>
>>58360306
Just buy one premade, much less hassle and you get a complete warranty.
>>
Just fresh installed a windows 7 for the first time on a laptop. Is there a better way on finding and updating drivers, a program of something?
>>
>>58360385
you get much longer warranties on parts from legit manufacturers.

thats really the gain from building your own vs premades. premades will typically be full of garbage parts from literally no-name brands, even "important parts" like the PSU and ram.
>>
>>58360302
>dude HP sux

No, it's because Dell used to make top notch laptops.
>>

Maybe now but that wasn't always the case.

Since you guys are fighting so much, original anon here. If I'm not going to do gaming and the most I'll probably do is video watching, is an integrated graphics card ok? Or should I get a GT920 added on.

Yes I'm looking at a Latitude.

You'll be fine

If I were to hook up hard drives to another computers(pc2) power supply and have the data cables hooked up to my motherboard(pc1) (while the other computer(pc2) is running), would I be able to read them on my computer(pc1)? Is there any fault in this?

Only asking because I can't fit any more hard drives in my main pc (properl) and the sata power cables I have are not long enough to niggerrig them up another way inside the case.
>>
My mom just bought a Windows PC
What antivirus software should I install? She pretty much has no idea what she's doing.
>>
>>58360970
Nope, that'll work just fine. You can even make use of http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-power-up-an-ATX-Power-Supply-without-a-PC/ to power the harddisks with just a secondary PSU.

>>58361016
No antivirus program is going to protect her from doing stupid stuff. Teach her how to be paranoid.
>>
>>58360970
Hard drives interface with PSUs directly. The motherboard is not involved. If you want to power on a supplemental PSU without connecting it to another motherboard, it can be powered on by sticking a paperclip or LED or something in the green and any black on the big board connector.
>>
>>58361031
Even if that were the case, I doubt she'd be better off without an antivirus program than with one
>>
Green is PS-On, black is GRND. Connecting them powers on the PSU.

>>58361064
Sure, but WIndows Defender is as good as any other except that it doesn't have definitions dating back 30 years because Micorosoft realizes that a 30 year old virus won't run on Windows.
>>
>>58361044
>>58361031
I'd just be using the motherboard to power on the PSU since it's already hooked up and everything. Everything is going to be held in a separate case so I figured I'd just use something that's already mostly together.
>>
>>58361085
Well, in a perfect world you'd make sure both computers were properly grounded, to avoid short-circuits or ESD migrating from one to another, but beyond that, knock yourself out.
>>
>>58361016
Malwarebytes
>>
>>58360407
Mostly just let the system do it alongside windows updates
>>
>>58359947
They're both good laptops. HP has had some issue with their casings in the past, but that doesn't mean it's still a problem. I'd look up reviews of similar models and see if people have been having any problems

Bitdefender has some of the best detection rates, and the free version is old-person proof. Also set dns to norton and make her everyday user account limited.

I probably could if I tried, will try it if all else fails.

Yeah they work, had to edit my windows instalation USB in order to make them work.

If you want the best gaming performance, save for NoVidya and Jewtel products. AMD is for cheap builds.
>>
>>58361792
Cool. A lot of people don't know they have to patch the installation. You probably just want to download the networking drivers on another pc and transfer them over using usb. Then get windows up to date.

It will populate most of the drivers automatically (be sure to check optional updates)
