Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

How is battery life from an hdd to ssd?

I have the chromebook edition of x131e(celeron) running win7,

If you want ThinkPad you'll have to spend more than 1000 dollars. With the current generation for example, the T460s is offered with 2 display types, a baseline 60% sRGB FHD panel and a 96% sRGB WQHD(2560x1440) panel that costs about $150 more.

Hey >>>/g/tpg/

I have an X220. My battery lasted for 3 hours until the day before yesterday, now it suddenly lasts barely half an hour.

The only thing out of the usual I did was keep the battery and laptop in a bit colder room let's say 15°C and higher for a day. The battery was unplugged and the lap was doing some stuff at 50% cpu.

I don't know what to do. Can I somehow recondition or do I need a new one?

>>
>>58353422
That's my problem.
I have a hardon for thinpad, I love the aesthetics, trackpad, waterproofness, and sturdyness. I hate gayming notebooks design.

In this price check comparable p50/70 and clevo both will have i7, DDR4s and SSDs, but one comes with quadro m1000m the other with gtx1070...

Yes I know it's a 1st world problem. But I see you guys discusing about second hand t's all the time but when somebody comes with higher budget lots of anons turn passive-aggresive.

>>58355209
I came to /tpg because it's one of few boards I lurk. I know you guys know more about tech news than any ppl I know irl.
I would be completely fine if they were having shitty graphics and I'm fine they are not for gaming, but what i really realised is I pay huge load of money to have a graphic card that render smoothest CAD lines but cam't run vidya from 2013... And there is no other configuration option for p50.

I decided to talk about my matter with thinkpad circlejerk because well, my mom ain't got a clue about the topic..

And for your information all comments criticising my way of conduct are also helpfull in making a decision. I've never spent more than 500$ for a gadget in my life, including first PC as a teen.
>>
>>58351108
limit the frequency by setting the maximum processor state at the power options control panel.
99% disables turbo and reduces the heat.
65-70% works pretty good for me.
>>
>>58355390
Fair enough
Just remember, in general, parts for business computers are a lot cheaper than consumer equivalents, since you're getting a gaming laptop, you're gonna get the gaming tax on those parts.

It took me three months of research before setting down and buying my first laptop, an X61T half a decade ago.
I looked up everything about them.

Have you considered Dell's Precision line? They have been known be upgraded to GTX cards from Alienware laptops, much easier than HP Elitebook 87xx & 85xx line.

Is your budget $2500, or is it $800? Because it's kinda hard to recommend anything other than Aliumware.

I checked most of the market.

The huge part of this investition is on-site 3year warranty that comes either with p50s (quadros) or Saelics Vidi (clevo rebranding - comes with gtx 1070).
My budget is 2200-2500 to be exact.

What parts are you specificly talking about? All stuff in my price range comes with i7 skylakes, DDR4's , M.2 slots.

Even if I go for gtx, I'd use it for 5% of a time i know but more I read about nvidia quadros the more i see they are overpriced as fuck for what they give.

>>
>>58355745
Just get the clevo then.

Literally doesn't even matter, you're going to view gaming benchmarks as a higher priority than proven reliability, ease of repairs & usability for a work computer (for which you don't even say what you need the computer for, let alone why needing a GTX 1070 at that).

Just take a 17" gaming computer to your work meetings, you wont fit in the business macbook/xps13/UX305 crowd, but who cares.

I see no reason why you want a gaming laptop for work other than you're trying to get the most bang for your buck.
IMO just get the best warranty for your computer, and maybe some extra protection for it too, and an external hard drive for backups

Is it worth it to get a 42mm m2 drive and keep the 500gb platter drive for storage? Also, should I just get an 8gb stick of ram to go for 12gb, or does the mismsatch not matter?

I am also going to replace the touchpad with the compatible 3-button synaptics touchpad from eBay.

What else do I need/what else should I do? I'm so excited for this fucking thing to arrive.

>inb4 quad-core processor, i'm not doing that

I'd buy a Blu ray drive, and if you can get an m.2 drive and regular SSD. Dual boot operating systems
>>
>>58360206
if you install a lightweight distro on it, yes
>>
>>58359662
eBay sells that, get like 10 nipples for a buck.
>>
>>58360252
I was thinking of getting a blu-ray later, for sure. But I'm not really a linux guy, so there's not a huge need for me to dual boot. i'd like to keep the regular hdd for media files and shit.
>>
>>58359902
>>58360467
Honestly I don't notice the difference really between m.2 and and my standard 2.5 ssd's. I've run the benchmarks and yes my numbers are up with m.2 but it's not noticeable at all. I do like m.2 for the space saving aspect (extra drives always welcome). The bandwidth is nice to have when you actually do a ton of writes. Once we get to a point where it's affordable within reason to have an array of 2-4 m.2 1-2TB striped then we'll be cooking.

Cool, I've pulled the trigger.
Seller says it has a screen from an X32, an extra battery, 1GB of RAM (up from the standard 512MB) and a 160GB drive (up from 60GB).

Unfortunately it has a massive green sticker of a Space Invader on the back, but I can live with that.

M.2 slots on ThinkPads are usually still SATA, not PCI. So it doesn't make a huge difference

Actually my CTO is using a hyperbook, and one of the seniors introducing me to company pushed all this gtx info on me as he had the same dillema for the past 6 months and ended up with discussed clevo. so I don't have to worry about others opinion. Actually there is one apple fun that get laughed at all the time.
This is not usa.

I do care for that otherwise I'd just go for gtx and forget about thinkpad. I can even get that clevo ~300$ cheaper (which would be put in more ram or another ssd as I have to spend that cash anyway...)

Also gaming laptops are ugly as fuck.

I guess I just needed some slap from you guys thats why I started this conversation in the first place, I always wanted highend thinkpad - for the last work week I was pushed to the side of clevo by my coworkers - now I'm shifting back to the business side of the spectrum.

Best part? We are embedded devs. Well they are, I'm still just a pleb.

>>
>>58365223
I couldn't be happy with it because the design is a big regression compared to older WS thinkpads I'm used to. I think everyone already knows about these problems, but P50/70 are special cases because they were hyped as a return to older thinkpad quality. It's true that they're much better than the W540/541 abject failures, but they're still not worthy.

There was nothing wrong with my P50 technically and the screen in the unit I had was fine apart from the claustrophobic ratio (4K version). It was just very unpleasant for me to use, so I sold it.

I see. I don't have too much experience with ThinkPads of old aside from using them in school as a kid.
The only complaints I can think of are the duplicate volume function buttons, the swapped function and control buttons, and the mediocre brightness.

X220T is guaranteed to have an IPS screen. It seems to have some protective surface on the screen, which makes it look a little bit less clear and bright than the X220, but it's pretty close in quality.

X220T is also a bit heavier too, but if you really want to draw on it, then it's the way to go.

It was like this >>58352862 at 7% for 2 hours, played back 720p anime all the time + converting it to 60FPS with SVP and I was surfing the net simultaneously so I know the capacity or whatever it is called is good but the sensors are bad. Hey /tpg/,

I recently bought a renovated (not a native speaker) T420. The problem is the battery stopped charging after a week or so.
The problem shouldn't be the battery, it doesn't work with a new one in either, or the charger, because the notebook works with it being in the power socket.
I highly doubt it's a software issue, it isn't charging when it's off (correct me if I am wrong).
Does it mean it's the motherboard?

it could be an adapter problem. ThinkPads just require a passive DP to HDMI adapter because the GPU can drive the DP port in HDMI mode (hence the two plus signs near the port, they're dual mode).
Does the adapter work with another TV? it could also be the TV
>>
>>58374021
It was branded as a 4k/2K HDMI with Ethernet. Ive tried another generic cord and it didnt work either.
>>
>>58374030
It could also just be the cable itself. I've had CEC/ARC issues with older cables pre 1.4 spec HDMI. It goes all wonky or won't work at all.

>>58374047
Adapter then perhaps as >>58374030 pointed out. Hmm.
>>
>>58374030
I will try a passive adapter. They are cheap. Its what I was going to originally buy but thought 4k required active. Thanks.

The rMBP if you have to choose absolutely between two. W701 have a Arrendale i7. You want Sandy Bridge at least.
But if you can, you should get a P70.
>>
>>58374071
so you need 4K output? i remember seeing some DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters on Amazon

>>58374089
yep, sometimes you need to enable the digital audio out in the sound control panel. Make sure to select that output as the default so all your applications will sound through the TV/projector
>>
>>58374100
Yea Fedex sent me a notice about delays due to Memphis hub being all snowy. That was yesterday. Thankfully right now I'm looking out my window and it's 72 degrees out.

For any casual X220 users: windows 10 runs really nice after you deleted all the spyware and trashware crap. go to privacytools.io for relevant programs and scripts to remove shit.

So what are some approved monitors I can use with my x220. I'd prefer a thinkvision but can't find much relevant information on all the models. No adapters, just want to use the displayport.

Not an argument
Of course Linux is better than Windows, especially on ThinkPads, but windows 10 is not difficult to manage and much better than Windows 7 for anything remotely modern

I wouldn't be too mad if any PC manufacturer actually succeeded at making a competitor for the 12" macbook
It's really nice, hardware wise
no clue about the OS though

The OS is nice, but is slowly being rotten by the attention that Tim Cuck is giving to muh iToys.

>>58374241 here
I said casual users for a reason. I run GNU/Linux on my own x220.
I just wanted to say that a x220 is really nice even if you run the modern w10 on it. I did it for my gf since her old laptop broke and I was surprised how fast and nice the experience is with all the shit deleted. Of course I will need to check it regulary to remove the new shit, but if you want to introduce thinkpads to people without much computer experience it's a great introduction.

I would be devastated

Different target audience m8. Maybe Lenovo will release some Yogabook or something to compete in the macbook-alternative market, but it won't be a Thinkpad

How is W520 doing for CAD related tasks? The one I'm looking at seems like a steal: i7 2920xm, quadro 2000m, fhd, ssd for 330$. I'm looking to convert my gf to thinkpads, she is currently running a generic Asus laptop with 4 gen i5 and 940m.

If you want CAD related get a W541 with the quadro. It's a beefy machine. The adpater is 170w though and can't be had for super cheap so don't scrimp on it.
