I just accidentally deleted the entire /var/lib/dpkg directory, the core package manager for every Debian derived linux distro. basically now software cannot be installed, and all my package dependencies aren't tracked. there's no way to fix it i can find. the fuck do i do help.
Restore it from your latest hourly incremental backup or rollback the deletion on your COW filesystem

Did you try mounting a live image and copying over that directory?
Genetically superior Windows users can live without dependency tracking or fancy apt-getting things. Instead we apt-get off our asses and install things ourselves from binaries called "exe files"
>accidentally delete a directory
>software cannot be installed
>no way to fix it
Wow, linux is so fucking great. Everyone should this amazing OS.

>tfw you accidentally your OS
>>58347676
copying the directory would still leave out any dependencie tracking of software i installed.

>virus deletes a directory
>entire computer spontaneously dies
>no way to fix it
Wow windows is so fucking great. Everyone should install this amazing OS.

i honestly can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. i think i used LVM though but i have no clue how to use the backups if any

>Accidentally delete System32 folder
>Software cannot be installed

Wow, Windows is so fucking great. Everyone should use this amazing OS.
>>58347698
yes because letting programs have almost free reign over your computer is a good idea
>>58347698
Well, funny enough his mistake kind of
turned his debian into something like Windows.
You could still install things technically,
but it would be shit.
>>58347587
And now you know why backups are important.
>>58347733
How much have you changed in root partition? If you have a separate /home, just reinstall and don't format /home
>>58347835
kek thats actually perfect. do you know of any os that has an installer that can do that.
>>58347833
yeah, it would be smart to use my 4tb external hard drive for something other than games
>>58347698
You sure, mate? We still have .msi bullshit, which is the worst thing in Windows. If you ever delete the package cache, the software you are trying to remove couldn't be removed because, duh, shitty package is missing!
>>58347587
You have a separate /home partition, right?
Just reinstall the OS and during installation choose "do not format the partition" for /home.
>>58347859
I think most Ubuntu-based distros offer to preserve /home at install
>>58347776
>Accidentally delete System32 folder
That isn't even possible, retard. Try harder.
>>58347747
Same for you.
