Hi there /g/uys! I have a question. I want to put Linux on my computer to dual boot with Windows 7. The problem is that the only network access I have at the moment is through my phone. I can download any of the isos and transfer to my computer to make the bootable usb no problem. But it seems like a lot of distros require Internet access just to install. And tethering isn't an option. Can you recommend a distro I can do a full install for from the iso only? Thanks!

I am building a media server and I require a suitable distribution, I am stuck between Debian and CentOS, I have experience with DNF if it even matters. For such irrelevant solution I'd go for debian simply because it has a helluvalot larger repository.
Debian has a newer kernel version than CentOS so expect better hardware support as well.

RHEL/Centos doesn't come with many media features because it's not it's purpose.
And since RHEL/CentOS is based on Fedora it won't have patented codecs such as mp3 codecs, so you may find yourself having to compile shit.

Let's be frank buddy, you hardly need a mission critical system for a media server, don't you?

Feel free to ask.

Pretty new to Linux, been trying to use mopidy on Xubuntu running as a service, problem is that it can't access my music.

The music exists in "/media/name/Media/Audio/Music", the directory is owned by my user (it does have rwx for everyone though), but I can't chown it to user mopidy. Is there any way to allow mopidy to read these files?

My uneducated guess is it has to do with the drive being mounted by my user, but how do I solve that then?

The only error I receive is "Local media dir /media/name/Media/Audio/Music does not exist." Presumably because it can't read it.

>It is inadvisable to describe the free software community, or any human community, as an “ecosystem,” because that word implies the absence of ethical judgment.

>The term “ecosystem” implicitly suggests an attitude of nonjudgmental observation: don't ask how what should happen, just study and understand what does happen. In an ecosystem, some organisms consume other organisms. In ecology, we do not ask whether it is right for an owl to eat a mouse or for a mouse to eat a seed, we only observe that they do so. Species' populations grow or shrink according to the conditions; this is neither right nor wrong, merely an ecological phenomenon, even if it goes so far as the extinction of a species.

>By contrast, beings that adopt an ethical stance towards their surroundings can decide to preserve things that, without their intervention, might vanish—such as civil society, democracy, human rights, peace, public health, a stable climate, clean air and water, endangered species, traditional arts…and computer users' freedom.

Just follow https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Fontconfig

What's so hard? Enable (eselect fontconfig enable blaa) slight hinting, sub pixel RGB rendering and default LCD filter. Then install Liberation and Noto fonts (with cjk USE (default) for those sweet Asian languages).

And to make sure if you have a DE use same config in it's font settings (slight hinting, rgb rendering).

Also put this shit into your ~/.Xresources
Xft.autohint: 0
Xft.lcdfilter: lcddefault
Xft.hintstyle: hintslight
Xft.hinting: 1
Xft.antialias: 1
Xft.rgba: rgb

Hey guys I need help with the installation of Arch Linux.

So I just downloaded the package "xorg-xinit". Reading the configuration section on the ArchWiki website, I'm seeing that in order for xinitrc to start a different environment from the default(window manager or desktop environment), first I have to simply copy the xinitrc file over to my home directory

I'm using the command:

 cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc ~/.xinitrc

The issue is that I'm not finding the copied file anywhere so I can't proceed.

I'm not entirely sure if this is normal but my root folder is on top of my "/" which I'm assuming is the home directory.

Anyone mind helping me out? I'm ultimately trying to install i3 and begin customizing.

How do I preserve command line completion when I write a wrapper. Say I write a script whose purpose it to log. It works like

log command

which logs the output of command. For instance

log ls

which prints ls and then logs the output. I know this can be done with redirection but just an example.

However when I type log ls, I lose the command line completion that exists for ls or any other command. How can I get around this?

I know some shell builtins like time don't lose completion.

Just to clarify unrar[tab] gives

e -- extract files to current directory
l -- list archive
lb -- list archive (bare format)
lt -- list archive (technical format)
p -- print file to stdout
t -- test archive files
v -- verbosely list archive
vb -- verbosely list archive (bare format)
vt -- verbosely list archive (technical format)
x -- extract files with full path

My primary issue was with task spooler:

http://vicerveza.homeunix.net/~viric/soft/ts/

but I've written similar programs that have lacked completion.

In any case, I'll take a closer look at how bash does completion. Thanks
>>
>>58347918
Ahhh, now I get it. You want to autocomplete arguments, not files.

To reuse the usual stuff, check what is called by:
complete -p unrar
which outputs:
complete -F _unrar unrar
So you add a completition for foo
complete -F _unrar foo
and foo[tab] gives:
foo
e l lb lt p t v vb vt x

Have fun writing a wrapper, kek.
I guess a redirection alias with tee would be a saner solution for your logger.
