How do you pronounce GIF? Do you use a soft or a hard G? I get mocked relentlessly by co-workers for using a soft G. Can't help it, I have just always seen it as a soft G. Hard G just sounds too German or something.
>>
Graphics Interchange Format
Do you say Graphics with a soft g?
>>
the inventor says it's pronounced like the peanut butter "jiffy" without the "y". a lot of people pronounce it like "gift" without the "t". i like the jiffy pronunciation, but literally
1) it doesn't matter and if people in your life are joking about it, they need to get a life; and
2) usage is the arbiter of all things. i'd like it if it mattered that the inventor preferred the jiffy style, but it doesn't. what matters is what the aggregate does.

but seriously, if your coworkers are mocking you about how you pronounce a word, do you guys seriously have nothing more interesting to talk about?
>>
>>58324682
acronyms break their constituent word pronunciations all the time. that logic is convenient, but empirically flawed.

like i understand using it as a guiding principle, but it's no more compelling than going by the inventor's preference.

Reminder that English is literally retarded. Poor burgers will understand the bliss of knowing a second language.
>>
I pronounce it GIF, as in gift, like any non-retarded person would.

>Joint Photographic Experts Group
>Jay-Fegg
>>
Jif is the only correct pronunciation. The inventor's choice overrides your instincts.
>>
>>58324741
Get raped and kill yourself, you retarded fucking faggot sack of nigger shit with down syndrome.
>>
>>58324764
Thank you anon
>>
>>58324764
yep. There's also Captcha, which we pronounce a little like Capture" but with an "ah" at the end. why do we make the "tch" into the conventional english sound? because it's convenient to think of it as a word rather than an acronym.

why do the inventor and others prefer the hard G? because it's convenient to think of "gif" as a word. and it's adopted that status. I don't think anyone is contesting that if "gif" was its own word without acronymic etymology, it would be pronounced like "giraffe" and "jiffy". the question then is whether you accept that it's become a word. given that the OED named it the word of the year in 2012, i think a considerable case can be made for that.
>>
Hard g.
There is no difference between g and g in my language so I didnt even think about it before.
>>
>>58324649
The correct way to pronounce it is ʒɑJf which phonetically is between a hard g and a soft g.

like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwtCgSRGVSI
>>
>>58324649
G as in graphics
>inb4 this >>58324764
I didn't know what jpeg or gif stood for at the time. Gif as it gift without "t" seemed like a logical way to pronounce it. Also, I'm not a native English speaker and we only have one way to pronounce each letter, as opposed to English where lots of letters can be pronounced 2 ways, we don't pronounce "g" as "j", it just makes no sense.

this.

These retards are basically like.. Oh, instead of calling you "{name}", I will call you dumb cunt. I know it's not your name, but it just makes more sense to me.
>>
I've always thought that you had to say each letter individually. GIF would be "gee ei eff".
>>
>>58324725
>>58324764
These niggas get it. I'm not reading "graphics interchange format", I'm reading "g i f". Honestly, it's only the hard-G faggots who get all about how anyone else says this. Now that they should know better, I hope they say jay-feg too.

Hmmmm, the country Niger is pronounced Niger though . . . as is Nigeria . .
>>
>>58324983
No It's not. It's pronounced Niger as in nigger.
>>
>>58324995
No, its pronounced Nijer
>>
>>58325007
Not where I'm from, nijjer. Everyone pronounces it "nigger".
>>
>>58325028
Your country is pretty retarded then, anon.
>>
If Genie is pronounced Jenie, why can't Gif be pronounced Jif?
Especially when it's the creators choice.

And >>58324682 is a dumb argument, because is RPG prounced with a hard R?
>>
>>58324649
Gif because nothing sounds like it so when you say Gif no one gets confused with the product/word Jif.
>B-but Jiraffe...
Gift isn't pronounced Jift is it? There are no rules, so why not make the pronounciation fucking unique?
>>
>>58325047
Yours is. Why would you then pronounce "nigger" the way you do, idiot? That's literally where the word came from.

It literally is.
>>
>>58325148
Actually no they have two different origins. Niger and Nigeria get their name from the Niger river, which is actually a native word for the river. Nigger actually comes from Negro which is Portuguese, and is literally their word for black you stupid nigger . . .
>>
>>58324649
Who cares
>>
I've only heard Americans say JIF, therefore JIF is wrong.
>>
>>58324649
Kif.

Blue and white 612 here.
>>
There is no argument on how to pronounce GIF. It was settled the instant the inventor created it when he named it after the peanut butter. The only people who "disagree" are those ignorant of history, like a giraffe sticking its head in the sand.
>>
>>58324649
I pronounce it as it's spelt
