IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Help me, /tpg/.

My X1 Carbon has outright died on me and I'm completely broke right now. My only two options are the T42 or X60/X61, all on Craigslist.

Which one should I choose and why?

Please help. I'm really in a pickle right now.
>>
Lads I must choose between
>a T420 with lines in the screen
I can do the FHD/WQHD mod later
>a X61 in perfect status
I can buy a X62 later.

So I've got an x220 on the way with i5, 320gb hdd, 4gb ram, and a fresh install of win 7 professional. It's obviously used but in great shape. In your experienced /g/entoomen's hands what would your first steps in customizing it be? Thanks!
>>
>>58314024
i think the t420 sounds like a better option because it's newer

The X61 has two advantages

maybe go for the x61 then, if you're absolutely sure you can get the parts for the mod

What about the Dell Latitude's? I'm specifically looking for one that's Win7 8GB ram and an SSD. I can always install the ram or SSD myself but if I can buy it as is that would be great. There is another Latitude with a 256GB SSD but a 6420 I think. Intel 5th generation (Haswell/Devil's Canyon) preferred. I'm eyeballing the Thinkpad's too.

Posting again

Just picked up a t520
Guy posted it on CL as a t420, for $145. When I got there, he said he'd still take $145, then I noticed the screen flickers when you move the lid a certain way. So he took off $25.
So all in all, $120 for a t520

How'd I do /g/? Also, ideas the screen issue? I haven't had a chance to open it up yet.

Having an issue with a T420 keyboard I just bought. I noticed the left arrow key needs a fair amount of force to register, and randomly acts as if it's being held down, without anyone touching the laptop. Noticed it when watching a stream, the player started switching random playlist order on and off, which is binded to that left arrow.
I take it I might need to pop the key off, does it use a regular scissor switch? If so I might pop it carefully and not break the tabs.

I have x220T 2640. I find it bearable, battery lasts between 1 and 3 hours untethered depending on use, although that life has been in decline. You can fix batt life by replacing with a newer batt. Whenever buying one of these you should try and talk whoever you're buying it off of to take out the HDD and the ram unless it is running win 7, then you should get there first and say you need to run a diagnositic and map the drive over then tell them to remove and ask for a reduction in price. I actually like the limited battery life, i feel like it forces me to be more conscious of the time I spend on the machine. For people with any sense of time it would probably be cumbersome as mobile computing option. I primarily use it for light browsing and playing poker.

>>58314035

idk where the sweet spot is for ram, guessing 8gb. 16gb would likely be overkill and would take forever to come back from sleep.

I'm not sure if they're rumours or not, but apparently Lenovo has shut the project down.

This Autumn/Fall would be the 25th Anniversary of the Thinkpad, and the last blog post about it on the Lenovo blog was August 2015.

Either they're keeping it really quiet and not even going to announce at CES and are going to announce it later, or it's dead

I am envious of americlaps' cheap ThinkPads.

Every time I look on eBay, I see great configs for pennies. The sellers over there really don't have a clue.

some reasons to consider the x220 over x201:
-can max the ram to 16gb if you want to virtualize shit
-intel hd 3000 is better for an egpu setup
-ssd in the x201 is probably as old as the computer. x220 has an msata slot for the option of two disks
-16:9 may be a dumb ratio, but you'll be getting 25k more pixels and your weird gag fetish porn will fit better
-can put in an ips screen if it doesn't already have one

I thought so. It looks weird too. They sold a tonne at 40% off for Black Friday but it still didn't seem worth it.

How about the X1 4th Gen or the T460S?

The X1 is so much more expensive than the Dell XPS in a similar config.

I'm looking for i7 7xxxU, 16gb RAM, 2 drive slots, one for SSD and I have my own 1TB drive already. Don't need a GPU, iGPU is fine. I want to try 2560x1440 but 1920x1080 at least.

What drew me to Lenovo was their spill proofness and easy build to upgrade.

Does the X1 Carbon have 2 drive slots? One M.2 and one regular laptop drive?

>easy build to upgrade
The Broadwell Lenovo's you have to take the whole back off to upgrade components. I'm in the market for a 4th or 5th gen based Thinkpad/Dell and the glaring problems with Lenovo is 4th Gen has an unusable trackpad and 5th Gen the trackpad is once again usable but not as robust as previous generations for upgrading and replacing parts.

Have you checked if there is a hardware whitelist? Sometimes Lenovo decides to do that.
>>
>>58329950
T540 looks decent and has an IPS or FHD option on the monitor I think. T500 has backlight bleed on the keyboard and the trackpad is horrible. I'd make sure you're fine with all that. Quite a few deals on the T500 pads but that trackpad always makes me cringe.
>>
>>58330520
I'm really limited on money right now and I'm buying it for $95 USD
>>
>>58330027
I had read on the Libreboot page that it was incompatible with quad-core CPUs, but I thought they were talking about Libreboot and not ThinkPads. Thanks anon.

>>58330020
Oh, and will a 7mm SSD fit in the w500? After reading that guide, I'm seeing that 9mm is apparently the size limit, but something smaller would still work, right? If not, i guess this SSD is going in my deskto.
>>
>>58330020
>>58330722
No. W500 is limited to Core 2 Duo processors.
mSata is also outside of discussion.
>>
>>58330520
Can you explain why the trackpad is horrible?
>>
>>58330844
Almost all notebook trackpads are bad. They movement's are precise, they have bad palm rejection, they precision is average at best, and a bunch of etc's.
Do want to know something funny? It's mostly a issue with generic drivers written without love. The Macbook Pro trackpads, for example, suffers the same issues in Windows too.
>>
>>58313954
I have a T400 that I want to sell.
It's got the P8600 (2.4GHz), 2GB RAM, the 3470 and a 160GB HDD inside. The overall condition is good. No scratches or anything but the old battery barely lasts an hour and the hinges are pretty loose. I was thinking about putting it on ebay for 100€ including docking station. Do you think that's realistic?
>>
>>58315575
wouldn't recommend anything with a 40 (T440, T540 etc) because these don't have dedicated buttons for the trackpoint
>>
>>58331042
You can always put the trackpad of the 60 models later.
>>
>>58316246
I'm not >>58316222 but I can tell you, I've made some bad experiences with trying to install W7 from USB. Always BSOD. No exceptions. On any machine that I tried it on. USB installation worked fine for W8 and W10 though.
>>
>>58331063
Yeah but the dedicated trackpoint buttons are part of the keyboard.
>>
>>58331078
I understand that's no the case.
>>
>>58331091
I just googled it. They must have changed that with the Precision Keyboard. good to know but I still won't buy one of the 6 row abominations
>>
>>58316387
depends. if you got discrete graphics install driver. if integrated only install driver if stuff like aero is not working.
>>
>>58331120
I understand. I feel that the new switches are excelent, but the keyboard is not the same with the chiclet style and the applesque five rows.
I wonder why the chinese community can make new motherboards for old models, but they can't make a new six row keyboard in the old style. Patents issue?
>>
>>58330844
They're bad because of this >>58331042

Track pad depresses physically down. It doesn't register two finger taps for right click correctly well enough. It lacks physical buttons for the trackpad. The keyboard backlight bleeds through the keys more than it should. The lid or LCD is a plastic clasp/latch and not the original mechanism. This puts more stress on the monitor hinges and susceptible to wear and failure.
>>
>>58331042
What do you think about the 5th gen broadwell t450 versions? I was looking at some of those on ebay. I'm trying to stick with haswell/broadwell as a laptop choice at the moment. The other options I've looked at are the Dell E6540's. Saw one go for 375 dollary doos tonight and there are some in my area for 350-400 dollars. Docking station for these is also cheaper I've noticed than the Thinkpad's.
>>
>>58331070

Need advice, /tpg/

Bought a T440p everything is as described except for one thing: there was suppose to be an 250GB SSD in this thing, but I realized it has a 500GB drive in it. Red flags were raised, so I checked and found out it's a fucking Travelstar HDD.

Immediately checked BIOS since trust is out the window. Found out CompuTrace was on but not activated. Disabled it.

Should I permanently disable it though? How fucked am I?
>>
>>58331687
Probably was a mishandling, but if you don't trust it, give it back and ask for a refund.
And if you can't, then disable computrace forever. Blow that fuse!

>>
>>58331687
just get a refund from ebay for "item not as described" and send back a shitty old laptop or something. scam the scammer.
>>
>>58332505
if there's a BIOS password you're fucked. but if it's only computrace that's no problem at all. even if you can't turn it of you can request it to be deactivated by Absolute. you have to provide photos of your serial number and other stuff though to prove you actually have the laptop. of course, if they have it registered as stolen you are beyond fucked
>>
Hello! Let's get sentimental in here, how do you feel about the inevitable crash of the thinkpads? Surely in about 3 decades the thinkpad we know as chunky, reliable tanks will not have any spare parts for replacement, this kills everything. I'm already facing this problem severely with many other things but how do we prevent it from going further? Make Lenovo ride our dicks? Chew their asses until they make the retro happen? Maybe IBM will make a comeback? I just want to have my stinkpad for fucks sake

I've never used an eGPU, but as far as I'm aware, only some setups let you output the image from the eGPU to the laptop monitor

Are there any decent ssds around 50 bucks? I'm looking for an upgrade for my t420s but I'm not sure I want to spend 100 bucks for a Samsung Evo or something. Thanks.
>>

You could go as low as t61, but probably T410.
If she wants an x series, x61 or x220 (if you feel generous)
Older ones should do it if she doesn't bloat it at all.

>>58341358
It costs 50€ for a new one, I think I'll manage with the old one.

I got my first thinkpad in 6 years, a T60. It was listed as having 1.66GHz C2D & XGA screen, but it came with the 1.86GHz C2D and an SXGA+ screen, so I'm pretty freaking happy. Any tips?
>>
Anything inherently wrong with the T410? Going to look at one later today.

Ok /g/entoomen, I have lived a long time by the axiom that you never ever take advice from 4chan regardless of the board and this has never let me down. Well I've been looking for a while at a couple of older models laptops and had it narrowed down to an Alienware m11x and the x220. The thinkpad was a third the price of the Alienware so ended up going with it. Picked it up this morning and it is actually a pretty incredible little machine. It's snappy, lightweight, and it has easily the most comfy keyboard I've ever used on a laptop. Thank you guys so much for an actual piece of great advice!
>>
>>58343183
you need a Core i3/5/7, anything older is sadly too clunky and would frustrate someone who doesn't use a Thinkpad specifically for the pleasure of using a Thinkpad, so anything X200/T400+ Probably want resolution over IPS for usability so X201
>>
Does the exist an organization from which I can buy a specific key? I'd hate to waste all that money when this 2008 machine still runs my GNOME desktop superbly.
>>

eBay
you might end up finding a keyboard is a little bit more expensive than a single key, but much newer than your current keyboard

wow nice
gonna build a frankenpad by chucking in a t61 motherboard?

>never take advice from 4chan
worst meme
the native 4chan user is so autistic and so aggresive that they end up developing good taste and knowledge about their subject of choice which leads you to get good advice from any board, that said you do need to look in special places to find said posters sometimes.

Hey guys,

So I got that T500 and am now posting with it. I don't see any issue with the trackpad so far, the keyboard is also really comfy and I don't notice any flex at all. It's a little dirty but other than that it's fine

I'd say I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase.

Not really, I don't have the money for it, but I was going to replace the screen, I even ordered one, and now I have two SXGA+ screens. I will be looking into getting an SSD for it though.
