Who sandy here?
Should I upgrade or OC my 2600K?
Any good guides on how to OC?
>>
Upgrade now, you can get up to 1% performance boost.
>>
>>58307453
this
>>
>had a 2500K
>it was great
>decided I wanted vt-d
>sidegraded to a xeon e3 1230 v2
>decided I hated intel because memes
>sidegraded again to a fx-8370

like 500 bux in CPU later I have nothing to show for it

fuck I'm stupid
>>
You get about a 10% performance boost every tick
So enjoy a 20% performance boost clock for clock. :^)
Just overclock it, I'm running my 2500K at an easy 4.6Ghz at 30*C idle.
>>
>>58307453
Wow! No wonder it costs twice as much as when Sandy Bridge was new.

>>58307483
You should upgrade to Kaby lake, it's literally like having your CPU run at 101%
>>
>>58307428
Rocking two Xeon 2680s here.
Never upgrading.
>>
>>58307428
OC better but anything past 4GHz is pointless for obvious points.

Used to have a 2700K which was a tad better than the 2600K.

Better off upgrading to a HEDT system (Broadwell-E) rather than a consumer desktop system (Skylake) for a noticeable performance boost all around.

Bottom end HEDT CPU is still much better than top range consumer desktop range CPUs (both i5 and i7 varieties).

I only found that upgrading from Sandy to Devil's Canyon/ Haswell that the chipset performance was significantly better and the chipset from Z97 made the chipset of Z68 look primitive in comparison (although P67 had more positives than Z68 at the time).
>>
>>58307453
Even the new i3 7350k outperforms the 2600k. It's not a massive performance boost and not worth upgrading if you don't care about squeezing out more FPS in vidya or encoding faster, but the difference is big enough now to be noticeable.
>>
Seems like the only thing I'm missing out is PCIE 3.x
>>
>>58307428
i won't switch, no need. just runs fine with ubuntu.
>>
>>58307520
nah I got Zen lined up.

I'll consider Intel again next time I need to upgrade.
>>
>>58307428
To OC do this:
1. Set freq to wht you want
2. Crank up the voltage
3. Stress test it.
If it doesn't crash in 2 minutes - either reduce voltage (if temps go above 85) or bumb up the miltiplier a bit.

Do this until your pc doesn't crash in 2 minutes and temperatures stay below 85. If you got what you wanted - stress test for 8 hours just to be sure
>>
>>58307584
What's a safe max. voltage?
>>
>>58307593
No idea, google it
>>
Oh, and if it crashes with high voltage - reduce the multiplier
>>
>>58307593
Put it on max you can, if it does not work then try a lower voltage
>>
>>58307543
sure, but i3 has to be OCed to hell and back to achieve it

i dont think itll be a smart move to upgrade to that
>>
>>58307695
I just don't want to fry it. I know power rises quadratically with voltage.
>>
>>58307718
they are trolling you, read any beginners OC guide
>>
>>58307428
7600ks will hit 5ghz easily, roughly like 40% faster than your ancient piece of shit. Doesn't matter if you play at a slide show refresh rate of 60hz though. If it's not for vidya then your use case is almost certainly threaded well and Zen will be a ridiculously massive upgrade
>>
>>58307754
I will get Zen if it's priced well (500$ is a bit high).
>>
>>58307744
Trolling how? This is how you overclock. You try to get highest miltiplier with lowest possible voltage and temperatures staying at reasonable levels (85 is very reasonable)
>>
>>58307773
There will be a shit load of chips with the new architecture, ranging from 300 walmart laptops to 32 core ginormous server chips. If you want overall compute it will be the way to go, until intel responds with cheaper skylake-e chips(who am i kidding)
>>
>>58307782
you are actually right.

I meant those comments with putting max voltage available nad lowering it
>>
2500k here and I'm not going to upgrade for a long time.
>>
i am skylake faggot fucker
>>
>>58307773
Zen will scale from 50$ Sempron shit to multiple-thousand-dollar Naples shit

I think you meant Summit Ridge

>>
Fellow 2600k here - I might grab Skylake once the prices drop due to Kaby considering that's the last chip Intel is making that they'll support on Win7
>>
>>58308344
Isn't SR the consumer variant of Zen?
>>
>>58307543
It's about damn time they made an i3k. Which is funny since they sorta had an overclockable i3 last generation and flipped their shit about it. I think they are expecting AMD to be competitive for once with Zen.
>>
OK, so basically I start by increasing multiplier with stock voltage and testing and when there's a failure, trying a higher voltage?

Ivy here, close enough. For overclocking, just leave it at auto, and put something like a +.025-.05 voltage offset. Then crank the multiplier up as high as the system will run stable. Shouldn't have much issue hitting at least 4Ghz.

Literally indeltical at 4K.

Zero point to upgrade

Lol are you telling me you haven't oc'd your 2600k yet?
>>
You can be like me and buy Intels PPPT (Performance protection plan something idk) for like $25, it's a warranty that covers OC

So being me, my i7-4790k is OC @ 4.8Ghz // 1.38V

Parker with my 32GB 2133Mhz ram and
GTX 1080
THE SKY IS THE LIMIT.

Seriously, real world performance is insane, Adobe Premiere Hardly utilized multiple cores, so I'm getting nearly max performance.
>>
>>58310443
>>58311727
Nice synthetic benchmarks losers. Try real world applications. Adobe Premiere doesn't give two shits how many cores you have. It usually works best on faster more efficient clocks. My 4.8Ghz OC is the peak efficiency bitches.

>tfw Sandy bridge at 4.3ghz
Everytime I think about upgrading to Skylake I realise I would be paying 300-500 euro's for a 10-15% performance increase and I end up spending that money on a newer gpu that nets me a far bigger performance increase.

The amount of worth I'm getting from my 2600k is amazing.
>>
>>58307428
Why the fuck did you buy a K model if you're not overclocking it?
>>
>>58316363

Im running three servers with xeon 2670s, god damnit they're pretty great even in 2017. Older $40 X5650 is pretty comfy with vt-d in homelab sandbox tinkering.

4790k in my gaming rig and I have absolutely no reason to upgrade anything until zen+ hits the market.

Sandy 2500K here, works great still and I havent even OC'd it.

Gonna wait for Ryzen and make a Mitx build, and if it sucks i pick up a mitx LGA1155 Moba when im in Japan.

Cant find em anywhere in Europe.

my i5 3570 (no K) starts to show its age in games like GTA. Is the i7 3770K still worth looking into?

sandy and ivy are still worth it if you aint crazy about the update memes.
>>
so how exactly should i go about doing a simple stable oc on my 2600k?

just increase the turbo to like 45? what about xmp and all that stuff?
>>
>>58324665
thanks, sounds good.
>>
Is there any point going from Haswell to Skylake?

Got an i5 4430 thinking of 6600k, better off with 4690k?
>>
>>58325726
Leave the base clock at 100, set turbo multiplier to 45 (or more, if you can) for all cores and set a frequency for your memory. Set voltage to either static 1.35V, or I had an option to set a dynamic voltage offset and I've set that to 0.1V for the same effect (except the voltage now scales; I have a P8P67 PRO).
The other stuff like internal pll overvoltage I left at auto values.

I tried 46 but it was rebooting during testing. I might get more by playing with all those advanced values.

In either case, I've read you shouldn't go over 1.35V on vcore.
>>
>>58312950
>triple the cores is bad
Let's not forget it's the same price...
And that isn't even its final form... Just a quick OC.
>>
>>58326031
>shouldn't go over 1.35V
Why?
Think about it.
Will you care if you shorten the life of your cpu?
The normal answer is yes, but right now, you can get a q6600 for around 10 bucks.
Would you care if you shortened the life of one of those?

Now it isn't far fetched to say if you kill your cpu in two years, that you can just get another for $30-50 and keep on going?
>>
>>58326262
>Will you care if you shorten the life of your cpu?
Kind of. New 2600K is like 300$. But if it died, I would probably buy an SR7.

What does q6600 have to do with anything?
>>
>>58326308
A q6600 is a 10 year old chip.
In 4 years your 2600k will be 10 years old.
It's safe to assume the price will lower.

And just because you are at 1.4v doesn't mean it will die tomorrow.
Ran some old 771 Xeons at 1.5+v for around a year and they still sort of work.

Daily reminder that your 8 thread cpu at 4.fucking8 GHZ just barely beats my old pc from 08 that is also 8 threads.
>>
>>58326859
It's 8 threads, and not 8 cores like your Xeon. Also that pretty incredible for an old Xeon.
>>
>>58326900
Cores and threads are almost the same for cinebench though. If you disable HT, your score will almost half itself.

i don't even outperform a stock 2500k in multi threading, what gives?

>>
>>58307428
2500K, reporting in. Keeping it till:

1- It dies
2- It is not longer good enough for modern applications

Probably keeping it for ~2-5 more years.
