Does such a thing exist? I'm looking for custom or hacked firmware for my printer that would let me print with 3rd party carts without being "low on ink". Specifically HP printers.
As a side question - is there any inkjet printer out there that doesn't fuck you in the ass with "low ink" baloney?
>mfw this is exactly the question that later resulted in the birth of GNU and FSF
also I've heard a rumour that devices made by OKI (and brother) are pretty okay modern printers.
If you print a lot look for printers that have aftermarket Continous Ink Supply kits. (example: http://colorway.com/ciss).
I have a decade old HP LaserJet P2015 that I bought brand new. Haven't done anything to it since, still works.

I've heard the same rumour about Brother, but i'm pretty wary of buying a printer only based on a rumour.
Got this HP 2050A printer a neighbor dumped on me for free, i got some 3rd party carts for and even a CISS rig, but the things still "run out of ink" after a number of pages have been printed with them. From what i gather it stores their serial numbers in EEPROM somewhere and doesn't want to forget their "low ink status" no matter what. So here i am, posting on 4chan if there are any known, more Stallman-approved printers out there.
I've seen projects that use an Arduino to drive an inkjet cartridge but nothing beyond that. Why aren't there any hacked firmwares after all these years?

Hey I had that printer and it stopped working just after the warranty got over. I took it all off and sold it parts by parts on ebay and through some friends.
i'm sure you can reset it, but when one of catridge empty you can't do anything. Reason you can't print because it could damage the print head.

Lasers are good enough and printer companies are as lawsuit happy as Sony is with hackers

Lasers run out of toner too, don't they? I know you can refill some, but if you want to print in color it's hell to pay... I feel like most people don't notice the issue in lasers because the page count before needing to refill is set so high.

Did it just stop working or did the ink lights start blinking? Honestly i can see why someone would wanna throw these out after a few years but it's still kind of a shame.
