I have an old family Dell XPS 630

I haven't upgraded the CPU since I bought it in June 2006, but I have upgraded the GPU and RAM. Eventually I'm going to replace the CPU and motherboard, but for now just going for a slightly better CPU.
This is what I'm looking at currently to replace it

1 - Is it even compatible? (I matched the socket types as LGA775, was there another factor to determine if it'll work with my motherboard?)
2 - Is it better? (2.4 GHz vs 3.33 GHz, or 2 Quad vs 2 Duo, do Cores even matter vs GHz?)

instead of a cpu "UPGRADE"
upgrade your mobo. and proceed to overclock your q6600 to 3GHz+ for better results.

Thats what i usually do before upgrading.
Before buying new stuff overclock the old really hard and buy new when the old breaks.
This way im still using my i5 2500k @ 4ghz after 2 years

Same goes here.
Running 4790k @ 5Ghz on 1.35V... for little less than a year..
No skyshit can even compare.

i think i could handle 5ghz but i dont really need it. i have had this cooler since i got the computer in 2011 but its sliding on the cpu. the bolts are on the motherboard traces so i am scared to take it of really.

>Q6600 -> E8600
Funny that. I recently switched over from those exact same processors but in reverse.
As far as I can see there is no noticeable difference (quad core is marginally slower) in lightly threaded workloads but in multithreaded the q6600 wins every time.
If you want to upgrade the single core performance you should OC or upgrade the socket type.
I didn't even think about overclocking.
Probably because all I hear are how people do it wrong and burn out.
Researching now.

>changing heatsinks on a proprietary CPU cooler hole system
>changing mobo in a Dell "BTX" case
Stop talking out of your asses
OP should get a Q9450 for cheap or just sell the thing and get a cheap Athlon X4/ivy bridge i5 PC

>actually wasting money on a C2D CPU
Kill yourself. Buy a new mobo and upgrade the system you twat.
Christ
At least do a 775-771 conversion.

But it's still pretty much a waste of money considering that a $40 g1820 is actually superior to a E6600.
CPU technology has really moved far since the core2s.
