I was thinking about getting pic related.

They make some nice ones, but most of both that you see are low-end lemons.
>>
>>58299990
A cheap chink one included with Lukey 852D+ station because I'm a poorfag. The heat gun is fine, the iron is crap. I don't need it very often though.
>>
>>58299990
You mainly need a good tip that won't get all messy. Or get an extra tip or two.
>>
Weller WES51 here, have done several large projects with it and has been great, both with low and high heat applications.

I have the same one, unfortunately I had problems doing some metalwork with it. It just doesnt get hot enough. I ended up with huge blobs because the area between the two peices just couldnt heat up enough i think

Admittedly they're all I've had experience with at work. The Weller we use is good for basic pcb population and mods but just doesn't have the wattage to keep heat through 5+ layer pcbs, that's where the pace we have comes in handy.
>>
>>58300526
Duh. I need soldering irons. I don't need friends.
>>
Hakko 888-D.

Very happy with it, paid for itself after first repair I needed it for.
>>
>>58300245

this. mine was 10€ tho.

because it has a led light in it.

(there was an even cheaper one but it had some hilariously low wattage)
>>
>>58300438
Irons aren't really suited for making welds in sheet metal in general. You're better off with a MIG/TIG

this glorious piece of soviet engineering. I bought it for, like, $10, and i used it for five years now - still going strong.

Sometimes i feel like i could use hotair though, i can solder microusb connectors with my russian one but hotair surely makes everything easier. Maybe i'll buy one of those chink hotair+normal combos.

I used some 5$ iron for 15 years or so. It had a sharpened nail for a tip! I even did dead bug bga with it, but i stopped doing drugs.

Been using pic related for a year or so, its okay. Couldn't justify spending 10 times more on an iron for some one off TQFP or QFN. For the rest its more than enough.
>>
>>58299990
Weller WS81, it's great. It works both with their WSP80 irons and the LR-20/LR-21 which is Weller's universal iron since the early 80's.

>>58302882
I've been looking at hotair recently and have determined that there's really only 2 choices - 500$-1000$ brand-name ones from Weller, Hakko, Pace etc., or 40-50$ chinese "Youyue 858D+" and the millions of other names it goes by. Seems like the chinese crap has abundant spare parts like heating elements etc. but they have a few issues that make them a fire and electrical hazard which need to be reworked. Mainly some units not being grounded properly, having an exposed AC mains pin on the front connector, or having the heater turn itself on without the fan spinning when the station is supposedly OFF, causing the hotair handle to go into meltdown.

Still, with all of that in mind i've ordered a chinese "Kaleep" one. Apparently it uses a standard Atmega microcontroller and someone from the EEVBlog wrote a custom firmware for it.
>>
Hakko 926
>>
>>58300245
I used to just use a shitty radioshack one that would fucking start fires. Right around $15 dollars and you get a shitty one that at least has some temp control

>>

>>

>>
>>58304640
Smear it on the pads you want to solder to, place your component, take a deep breath and you are ready to go.

Its purpose is to remove oxidation, contamination and all sorts of crap that would otherwise make the soldering bad. You dont want to inhale that shit.
>>
>>58304585
of course

Anyone know the name of a good chinese digital solder station? I know there are some good ones for relatively cheap but don't know the name of them.

if you're a noob or a poorfag, buy a cheap chinese knockoff Hakko compatible station for $20 and buy some Hakko tips. It won't be as good as original Hakko but then again, you won't fucking notice it anyway.

PROTIP: save the extra money and spend it on a scope.

Got this one now.
Had a 20€ Weller one before which hat only 15W or something, but for small electronics it really makes no difference what you use imo.
Got pic related because it is more comfy and has a smaller tip, that's it.

I think if you are REALLY soldering a lot that expensive weller stations are more durable n get hotter ever quicker, but for my purpose a cheap one does it, too.
>>
>>58309618
>Probably overkill for a hobbyist.
Probably the minimum for a hobbyist who doesn't want to hate his hobby though. Seriously, cheap irons make you learn to hate soldering.
>>
I once borrowed a cheap iron from my dad and whenever I plugged it in it tripped a breaker. Defective or just shitty?

FX-951 is fucking great. Just make sure to get a few kinds of tips depending on the size of things you want to solder.

Idk the exact model but it cost 700$.

Trakpower TK950. It's a fairly reputable hakko clone, apparently it's pretty close according to people who have done teardowns. The new hakkos are no good for me since I'd rather have a dial than up and down buttons. This trakpower seems to work pretty well, no complaints, except the holder doesn't hold the iron as tight as I'd like, and the strain relief on the cable wants to pop out out of the handle sometimes.

I have some cheapo offbrand one back home. It was okay.

But one day I needed a soldering iron and mine was 7000 miles away so I bought a cheap Hakko wireless one.

Except for being unable to change tips and absolutely devouring batteries it is pretty good.

Its a fantastic induction soldering iron, heats up to full temp in seconds.
>>
>>58299990
That looks like fucking Fischer-Price shit.
>>
>>58310833

My 200$ Weller station sure doesn't have that feature...

>>58315872

It does, which is funny for a top-tier japanese station. I've even seen chinese copies try to emulate that hotwheels look. What happened to the old "black" look like on the 936?
>>
Daily reminder if you're using a resistive soldering iron instead of a superior inductive soldering iron you're an idiot that is holding back the adoption of better technology.
>>
I'm using some half broken thing from the 70s.
It heats up, it melts solder well. Why would I need anything else?
