Mostly interested in Cameron Howe's character. What kind of places would hire her? What field is she is a specialist in? Generally curious what areas of research this is,
>>
>>58292899
>science

Most likely Systems, or Computer Systems Engineering.
>>
>>58292951
What sort of shit do I google to look up profs that do this? "Computer Systems" ? Is this more in CS or CE?

In the show they reverse-engineered patented IBM code -- didn't know how to label what the fuck that is in CS

If I remember correctly they were reverse engineering BIOS chips.

Thats a bit more up the computer/electrical engineering alleyway

This video has some insight into the field:

>>58292899
i'd like to run her software on my hardware, if you know what i mean.
>>
>>58293337
Great man thank so much

>>58293786
Me too brother
>>
>>58292899
I like how the sjw are now rewriting history to record that women, not men, were behind the computer revolution.
>>
>>58294274
Calm your bitchtits. It's a work of fiction.
>>
>>58294274
Yeah, I had to stop watching it the moment the gay IBM dude picked her
>>
>>58294324
Except its retarded fiction. Anything remotely interesting died after the first episode. By season 2 they barely even touched a computer. The show isn't even good at convincing the viewers that it takes place in the 80's. Pro tip: playing some Miami Vice music and having a Commodore 64 pop up occasionally doesn't make the show fucking 80's.

>>
>>58293337
cool link
>>
>>58295099
My favorite scene was in season 1 when they see the Apple machine and they know they don'thave shit on it
>>
What modern company would want to hire Cameron Howe based on her intellect/skills? IBM is a dinosaur now. I couldn't imagine someone like her working there
>>
>>58297305
haven't seen that yet, can you explain
>>
kk
>>
>>58297305
Oooooh shit the look on that asshole's face when he heard it speak
>>
>>58292899
electrical engineer
learn electronics and assembler
>>
>>58295099
I had to stop watching when the "genius programmer" girl was only typing with two fingers. I mean fuck, how hard is it to get an actor that can touch type in this day and age.

Funny thing is, I hate sjws too. But get your shit straight, faggot.
>>
>>58294274

Don't make me post that Margaret Hamilton picture again.
>>
>>58297305

Except this was literally true.

Apple showed the Macintosh to certain people in closed hotel rooms during COMDEX in 1984, and everybody was shitting their pants because the computers they'd been working on for the past 2-3 years were still running text interfaces on 2-bit monitors.

Literally nobody could compete until Windows was released nearly 2 years later.
>>
>>58299988
>Literally nobody could compete until Windows was released nearly 2 years later.
Nah. That was a stop-gap.
Win 95 was the real attempt at a GUI.
>>
>>58297326
Bumping question, what kind of company would hire her kind of talent nowadays? I think she had a very general talent that could be applied to anything so probably a hot start up that'd be acquired or one of the big 4
>>
>>58292899
With her skillset, she'd be an embedded software engineer working close to the metal writing bootloaders, drivers, and firmware in general.

In reality, she'd have been spending a lot more time looking at hardware schematics, since she's coding at a level where that shit matters, and the electrical engineers can fuck you over by making changes in the hardware after you wrote code for an older revision.

>>58301537
She'd be working at a teleco doing board bring-up for network switches or writing the firmware for some internet of things product. I also see people with that skillset working as cloud engineers, making low level optimizations to hypervisors.
>>
>>58301845
Excellent reply, I'm very interested in this sort of thing. What can I google further to look up these sort of jobs?

I found this to be an interesting responser: http://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/3343/how-to-become-an-embedded-software-developer
>>
>>58292899
>What kind of computer science is in Halt & Catch Fire?
none. just your daily american melodrama.
>>
>>58299988

As someone who was there, some people were blown away, but an equal number of people thought it was cool but stupid - who needed their data processing machines to have a GUI? What was the point of that?

Honestly, those people weren't wrong, either. Home PCs/general use PCs didn't really take off for another 5+ years.
>>
>>58294274
Women were behind it though. Men were more concerned with math in the past, but a lot of the actual programming was done by women, and innovation came as a result of the female programmers piecing things together on the machines, finding errors, reporting them, and implementing or suggesting fixes.
>>
>>58302265
What are you on about? Some women were involved in programming back in the day, but the ratio was pretty similar to how it is now - the industry was dominated by men.

What are Zuse, Neuman, Turing, Backus, Naur, Dijkstra and many many more (males, what a supprise).
CS was always totally male dominated.
The only time when woman were somewhat relevant was when they were a cheaper subsitute for computers as computers werent viable.
