I'm applying to Virginia Tech later today and still haven't decided upon a major to pursue...I think I have narrowed it down to either business information technology or computer science. Which would you choose and why?
>>
>>58288252
Business IT will be looked down on by companies hiring.
>>
>>58288265
So would it look worse than comp sci?
>>
Also, how long would it realistically take to learn a fair bit of java and c++ if i decide to take comp sci. I don't want to be left behind because I heard the courses move quickly. At Tech, the first year is general engineering so I would be able to learn these languages in that year on the side. Sorry if that was worded awfully, I'm really tired.

>>58288252
You could go to a real school instead and apply to pic related
>>
>>58289433
Why do you need to go to a real school to apply to Georgia Tech?
>>
No employer actually gives a shit as long as you have a bunch of projects completed
>>
>>58288252
>asking 4chan what to do with your life

Why would any sane person do this?

Anyway, I would go with computer science because business IT is essentially future sysadmin or IT manager job.

You should major in marksmanship.
>>
>>58289660
See that's that Virginia Tech reading comprehension getting you all confused
>>
>>58288291
CS is more rigorous and mathematical. Business IT is where the dummies who can't hack CS end up. I did Business IT.
>>
>>58288321
Once you have a solid foundation it takes 2 or 3 weeks at most to become familiar with a language, given enough dedication.

Focus on the maths, data structures and algorithms courses and avoid the language specific courses, they are worthless.

Everything will fall in place with time, you may think its a waste of time when you get started, you may want to become a C whiz, but that's a very stupid thing to do.

If you are not convinced, join one of these shitty code camps and skip college instead

Application closed yesterday anon, I applied
>>
>>58289763
Ok thanks for the info
>>
>>58289965
What resources do you think would be most beneficial in starting to learn java and c++?
>>
>>58288252

Let's have party at Virginia Tech, shots all around.

Would you also look down on a business major? It ultimately just comes down to what you're interested in. Science, as in computer science, is a pretty nerdy/academic field. If you're interested in doing something with a shorter-term payoff and more tangible results, then a business-oriented degree is probably a better choice.
>>
How stable are jobs for CS majors? I am worried that the field is so competitive that getting hired will be difficult

I barely have a 3.0 at a mid-tier school yet I'm locked into (finished paperwork a week ago) a $75k starting offer from the company I interned with over the summer.

Work internships. I repeat: work internships. And since we're STEM, they're paid and usually paid well, they aren't unpaid coffee runner jobs like liberal arts types are. Be at least average at social interactions. Work experience and not being a complete autist far outweigh grades, especially when you aren't going to a top-10 school. Most of the people on /g/ who couldn't get a job with a CS degree probably ate boogers during their interviews and said something like ">implying Ubuntu is real Linux." The panic that CS is oversaturated is (mostly) an overblown problem.

Now, this is for the United States. If you live in Europe then I have no idea.

Congrats on getting second place to my tiny school.

P.S. you stole our fight song, give it back.

I live in the US, but don't have the greatest social skills so maybe I should work on that some. Thanks for the info, you've given me some confidence in choosing CS

>66% male
No thanks.
>>
>>58289433
Same I just applied, I'm not getting in though. Haha, fuck me
>>
>>58290774
Best of luck! Working on the social stuff came hard to me, but it's well worth it. You will thank yourself in four years' time if you do.

Generally speaking, schools with few women have smarter/less annoying women than Statename State University. It's nice. Just befriend some people at a party school and bone the chicks there on weekends/parties, and when you get bored of that wife someone up from your school so together you make a shitload of money coming out of school.

Don't listen to that retard. Most places "business IT" is called information systems and the normies at big companies will wet themselves when they have a non autistic IT person in their presence. 95% of IT or CS is being able to communicate with management/customer/whoever you are supporting.
>>
Always do the opposite of what 4chan tells you.
>>
>>58291202
This is true.

However, do electrical engineering.

Prepare to live in RTP, NC. Most tech companies in RTP hire heavily from VaTech
