If you're looking for something to play about with but relatively cheap, get a mikrotik, very customisable.
>>
>>58285312
This. We deploy Mikrotik at work and they are surprisingly versatile. The OS is a strange Linux variation, but they offer a GUI (Winbox) that makes things fairly simple.

Have wrt1200 wrt1900 and wrt3200 all of them great performance, can fully saturate my 125mbps internet in 1000sqft appartment. Getting 30MBps file transfers on wrt1200, about 50 on 1900, and can hit 100 easy on 3200

>mfw this was 50% off on Black Friday

>it's fucking HUGE

Seriously this thing is insanely big, about twice the size of a normal router and that's not counting the antennas.

Get a separate ubiquiti AP from your router.

I use mikrotik.

ASUS TM-AC1900

$59 from T-Mobile. Reflash T-Mobile's firmware to any number of homebrew shit.

They are rebranded Asus RT-68ACU routers.

Basically if you're looking to spend <$100 then just get this router and reflash. if >$100 then go Ubiquiti/Mikrotik.

Beyond that, you're probably looking for AC Wave 2/MU-MIMO devices in which case you're paying top dollar for consumer stuff or paying REALLY top dollar for enterprise stuff. Not sure about Mikrotik, but Ubiquiti doens't even have a Wave2 Unifi AP out yet. Been waiting on that fucker for ages.

Not everyone is a gamer like you, and netcode has improved enough that it doesn't matter for most. I code over wifi and it's plenty responsive.
>>
>>58289177
It's pretty good, but we N now. I still need to replace mine, and should, now that my Internet bandwidth exceeds 50% of this router's theoretical maximum throughput for wired connections. I'll keep it around for connecting to my neighbor's Comcast for the unmetered loophole. It's working pretty well for that.
