It's way to much fucking around to switch between some text editor and an api documentation webpage and back again every few seconds to try and compare some api arguments. When you do that you introduce a mental context switch where you go from looking at programming stuff to dealing with task switching. Much easier to just have them side by side.

Not to mention many people are used to having a TV show or movie on as background noise that they are paying attention to loosely.

My laptop powers a monitor that I use as my main screen, so the laptop's screen is basically a second monitor.

It's nice being able to put my music player there or running task monitor and Speccy so I can see what bullshit wangblows 10 is doing that's running my fan.
Also good for YouTube videos that I want to watch while following a thread here. Made this year's BLM protests extra comfy.

actually writing the program can be done with minimal visual contact, you think up what you need and then you type it, and you don't the screen to type because any programmer is going to be a touch typist

2nd monitor for my gaming stream in a window and chatroom in a window. After that I power my 2nd monitor off and unplug it. My main monitor is ultrawide 2160x1080 and I always resize window to 1920x1080 with A Ruler for Windows software. I should've bought a 1080p normal monitor..
