Man, I didn't even have internet when I got my first computer of my very own. I didn't even know what a router was at the time. The cable modem was wired directly to the family machine upstairs, and the Windows 95 machine my uncle got for free from work was a standalone in my room. I used floppy disks to load it up with SNES ROMs from the family computer.
