What do people do in a situation where you need to format your PC and you no longer have the installation disks for anything? At that point do you just back it up and the disk is useless anyways?

Yes, of course. Any software/driver on those disks will be outdated in a matter of months (since that disk was burned, which might be months before you bought them).
Note down the product names of all your components and download everything you need from the vendor's site before you do a reinstallation.
