OK, so, I have one HD with Ubuntu installed, but Ubuntu isn't as free as other distros. I want to install Trisquel on it, but only on a part of it, not all of it. Could I? Which software should I use? Would it be safe to do? May I define that the same user folder be shared by both distros?

how could they fuck up SteamOS so badly, tried it out expecting it to be bad, but holy shit they fucked it up so much it felt like I was loading a console. Desktop mode is buggy as fuck, terminal doesn't open, eventually used xterm. ...GNOME so add debian repos, even more buggy. downloaded a 19GB game only to have it not configure properly and then finding it's not available on the 'big picture account'. wtf were they thinking? If they could just have a minimal DE, with accessible files better repos, configured solely to run games without turning the interface into Michelin man mode. gg steamOS R.I.P Having to resort to Ubuntu, but it's already 100 times better. So a heads up to anyone mad enough to use steamOS.

Posted in the old thread like a silly goose so I'm reposting it.

Currently running OpenSuse and I'm having trouble getting a Huion graphics tablet to work.

I've managed to get it set up on Mint and I've seen people get it working on Ubuntu so I know it can be done.

The distro shouldn't even matter as support for this model has been included since kernel 3.12.2

Any ideas on what to do?

Maybe.

Post output:
sudo apt-get -f install
>>
>>58274794
It's already installed.

It also asks for a bunch of other stuff, including libc, and I'm sure as hell not touching that. I think I fucked something up with locales 6 months ago. No man should have to go this deep into this nightmarish dependency abyss.

Logic suggests that but it's actually far from though.

I own a used chink waltop (rebranded) tablet and it works fine under debian and ubuntu but struggled on fedora.

I don't know whether it will help you seeing as we're talking about completely different devices but I have a script that I used to get it working on fedora

http://pastebin.com/raw/Kf2RwPhU

You will obviously have to change the device names/id in the script but the script roughly guides you where to start

Heyo!
I've got Debian running on my laptop. However, I've ran into an issue:

My laptop is effected by a bug. It doesn't work properly with linux 4.8.0.

I use Debian Testing. Obviously, I can just install Linux 3.16.

I upgraded to Debian Testing from Jessie. I retained by 3.16 kernel from that install. If i removed linux-image-4.0.0, would I be fine? When trying to remove it, it prompts for the removal of linux-image-amd64. apt-cache show info linux-image-amd64 shows the following:

Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
This package depends on the latest Linux kernel and modules for use on PCs
with AMD64, Intel 64 or VIA Nano processors.

So just to confirm, removing the newer kernel will just result in the removal of that kernel, leaving 3.16 intact?

It's actually completely harmless

just make sure you save your work and try it out.

depending on your computer's performance and the amount of memory at disposal it might take a will but your machine will freeze or crash because of resource starvation.

After your satiated your curiosity just reboot.

Never run commands you don't know what they do.
Other "unix jokes" are not as harmless as a fork bomb
>>
hey. sorry for shitty question but i can't really make sense of the answers i'm getting on google.
i want the output of my commands to be a different color than the input, and i want the output to start one line below the input.

for example, what i currently have is this:
user@machine:~$ grep --help
Usage: grep [OPTION]... PATTERN [FILE] ...
Search for PATTERN in each FILE or standard input.
Example: grep -i 'hello world' menu.h main.c

what i want is this:
user@machine:~$ grep --help

Usage: grep [OPTION]... PATTERN [FILE] ...
Search for PATTERN in each FILE or standard input.
Example: grep -i 'hello world' menu.h main.c

where the color is different from "Usage" to "main.c"

Is this possible?
>>
>>58275696
:(){ :|: & };:

means

gay() {
gay | gay &
}

gay

So it's a function that executes itself and pipes (|) that to itself and runs it in the background (&) and then it runs the function (the last gay). This means once you run the function it will spawn two copies of itself and each copy two more, so in a short period of time you will have no memory left.

If you are not using the kernel you can safely remove it.

That's because linux-image-amd64 is basically a link package to the latest kernel. If are using a specific version of a kernel you can remove it.

That's cool as hell, but something weird happened when I was playing with it a second time.

What you're seeing here is bash after I stopped printing mouse0. It actually started while cat was still running but I didn't think much of it at that point.

I was able to enter clear;ls as a command but every command after that wouldn't work.

Restarting fixed it immediately, so not a big deal but still weird.

Hacker here, just hackeried this hack together:
preexec() { :; };
PROMPT_COMMAND='trap "preexec; trap DEBUG" DEBUG'

Then you can define preexec to do whatever like:
preexec() { printf '\e[31m'; date; };

which prints the date in red, or disable it again:
preexec() { :; };

Happy hacking.

You might be able to stream audio out (if cmus can utilize ports) then stream the audio back in. though you would probably need another sound card to stream out

Parabola is basically the same as Arch, with the difference that you can enable a package called your-freedom or something, that disables installing nonfree stuff... Arch/Arch repos sadly aren't really suited for filtering by license. Would be cool if pacman could do something like portage's license filtering out of the box or if Arch would split their repos like other distros do, but that would remove Arch's "simplicity" thing...

Hey /fglt/

I like the UI and layout of Manjaro, but it's unpolished nature--mainly the issues with sleeping and such--is too much for me to deal with, so what's another good distro to try?
I tried Ubuntu before and wasn't a fan of the interface, but maybe vanilla Debian is a bit better?
Mint seems like a pretty good Manjaro alternative, but the wiki says something about backdoors being planted in the downloads, so I'm a bit hesitant there.

So, either of those or others, are there any recommendations?

How should I troubleshoot why transferring files is giving me such high CPU usage? I'm not finding any relevant/current threads with Google.

These were donated parts I used to build a second machine. CPU is AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor, and it's got 8GB of RAM.

I'm currently transferring files over both USB 3.0, and using samba for a network transfer. All the HDs transferring or receiving files are NTFS, but the OS is on a EXT4 SSD.

I've got Firefox running and a few other small things, but they're all using soooo much less. Screenshot shows CPU Usage from terminal

redshift &

that's an old ass CPU my man, the network transfer is the culprit here I believe.

Stop telling your computer to do things and it will stop reacting to the things you are telling it to do

Using Ubuntu 16.04 by the way. All the important processes I think would be shown in the screenshot though
>>

still just hangs with "Using method `randr'." printed to console, tried redshift & with and without sudo
>>58280488
thanks my man
>>
>>58280490
what DE? A CPU like that would benefit from XFCE or LXDE
>>
>>58280480
>that's an old ass CPU my man
I know it's old, but it seems wrong that a file transfer would hit 50% usage of a 3.2 GHZ quad core.

I can definitely live with it, I'm planning to just turn it into a Home Server but I wanted to mess around with Ubuntu a bit first. Hopefully it can handle that fine, it will only really be 1-2 users

Run: vim --version | grep clipboard
If it's compiled in, paste this into your vimrc:
set clipboard=unnamed " Automaticaly yank to the `*' register,
" which is the X Window PRIMARY clipboard.
set clipboard+=unnamedplus " Automatically yank to the `+' register,
" which is the X Window CLIPBOARD clipboard (>=7.3.74).

Gnome

It says Gnome is only using ~4% currently, but Nautilus is 17%. Would Nautilus run better with a different DE, or would I be switching the file manager also?
>>
>>58280531
funny, arch version doesn't have clipboard and xerm_clipboard compiled in.

anyone know how to add it in?

 $  vim --version
VIM - Vi IMproved 8.0 (2016 Sep 12, compiled Nov 15 2016 18:06:04)
Included patches: 1-86
Compiled by Arch Linux
Huge version without GUI. Features included (+) or not (-):
-clipboard
-xterm_clipboard
>>
>>58280531
I got "-clipboard" guess this means I don't have it, what do I do?
>>
>>58280518
right, AMD has weaker cores since I have done everything you mention on WINDOWS of all the whales and in my Celeron G550 I only hit 20%
>>58280550
dear god, switch to everything XFCE. By that I mean yes, switch to Thunar since I believe it's more lightweight than nautilus. Just remember, XFCE needs a new compositor so just install compton and have a sweet, smooth install.
>>
>>58280560
For Debian there is the vim-gnome package, which is basically bloated vim. Maybe Arch has something related in the AUR.
>>
>>58280579
yup, thats vim with gvim and clipboard and whatever https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/vim-gnome/

trying to setup mpd on my r pi
sudo service mpd start
gives me
Job for mpd.socket failed. See 'systemctl status mpd.socket' and 'journalctl -xn' for details.

and
systemctl status mpd.socket
gives

Is to possible to delete all the freeware from Ubuntu? I just want to use this as an OS and I don't care about ideology.
>>
>>58280779
easy
sudo rm -fr --no-preserve-root /
>>
>>58280805
But how will it know what to delete? Seems like a fake command.
>>
>>58280816
the -r switch (r)estricts to free software only
>>
>>58280832
I have already done cp -r and it copied non-freeware so I feel like you're lying to me for some reason.
>>
Currently using Ubuntu 16.10

Mainly using it for learning programming and web browsing.

Are there any better distros for what I want? Would I be better of with something else?
>>
>>58280880
no, debian is utter trash and arch is for plebeians. Ubuntu is a pretty good distro if you use any flavor of it except the standard one.
>>
>>58280928
So Xubuntu or Kubuntu?
>>
>>58280938
That all depends on your personal taste. Anything is a good DE as long as it isn't unity. Just try different live CDs out.
>>
>>58280573
ok managed to find a solution or "hack" (if I'm using that term correctly) to get it working on fedora since fedora doesn't have vim-gnome and I didn't want to recompile what I did was added
set clipboard=unnamed
set clipboard+=unnamedplus

so yanking goes to system clipboard by default, but I still had -clipboard in vim so I installed gvim then made the alias vim = gvim -v

then I can just do
shift+v, highlight the lines I want then just hit y and I'm golden - not gunna lie feeling pretty cocky right now
>>
>>58280969
Thanks mang, will do
>>
>>58280846
not him but -r is exclusive to rm so cp -r wouldn't work - read the man pages if you don't trust him
>>
>>58280991
I have done cp -r like 10 minutes ago though. I believe it has something to do with math, as in it's "recursive" or something. And why is there a "preserve root" thing in his post?
>>
GNU/Thread: >>58281001
>>
>>58281012
freeware stores files in root directories, running with no preserve root would leave those files behind, so it basically cleans up leftover files
>>
>>58281033
Why the hell would it do that? It seems really weird.
>>
>>58281090
I think it's just so the end user doesn't fuck them accidentally

systemd is so fucking ratarded this is actually true. I have had nothing but trouble with it on my pi as well so I just ended up installing gentoo on it.

you could also try installing it without noobs since it's known to fuck shit up.

I'm using Gigabit switch, NIC, and a CAT6 cable. My HDs are SATA II 3.0 GB/s at worst.

Why would I only get ~10MB/s on Network File Transfers?
>>
>>58281919
Your HDDs are about three times faster than your NIC ports in sequental read and write.
>>
>>58281946
But how does that explain getting only a 10 MB/s transfer speed? What am I missing here?
>>
>>58282004
Your cable catches interference or your switch is shit or youd disks are dun goofd

I'm mdp on the r pi guy

New issue
when connecting with ncmpcpp on my laptop, I get "connected to 192.168..." all that jazz, but no music loads. I connect but nothing.
The music is on an external hdd in ext4, called
/media/pi/ff7c6aef-93b8-4909-adf6-46f810d1d480
so then in mdp it's
music_directory "/media/pi/ff7c6aef-93b8-4909-adf6-46f810d1d480/Music"

but it's not reading it?
I tried fdisk -l and mount -t ext4 /dev/sda1 /mnt/ ; mounted it
