My girlfriend's TV started having problems, and I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out what the cause is.

I turn it on and it shows the RCA logo and its normal for about 5 seconds, and then the top half of the screen shifts it's position downwards and flickers and bounces.

Did she try installing gentoo?

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Had the exact problem, turned out that the heatsink thermal compound had all dried up so it was left overheating

Easy to fix though, just rip off the heatsink (might take some effort but it'll come off eventually, there's no clips or anything, just tear it off), clean it all up and then apply some new thermal paste

If you don't have any paste it's worth getting the heatsink off and checking it anyway

Also to be sure its the heatsink once you tear it off there should be some dried crap on there, if it's all 100% dry then thats your problem, but if it's still wet it's probably something else

Did that a few times

I'll try that out, and if that's the problem I'll buy some thermal paste
thanks anon

Errm, RCA is an analog signal isn't it? I'd put my money in a bad cable or connector.
If not, perhaps a bad capacitor.
