XFCE4 can look pretty much identical to cinnamon if you want, and if you don't want that then it's completely customizable to however you do want it to look.

And it manages that while being less resource intensive than cinnamon. I used to use cinnamon and I do like it, but there's just no point to using it over XFCE4 if you don't mind spending half an hour doing some customization.

Here is my desktop

I personnally prefer tiling + multi-desktop and the fewest mouse usage possible. A mix of AwesomeWM (for the lua conf and the better eye candy) and i3-gap (for the tiling algorithm) would be cool.

they just allowed vertical panels a couple weeks ago w latest cinnamon update. honestly needs some work though, cinnamon applets like calendar need to be reworked to look nice in vertical mode
