I have actually used that. Back in the Vista days.
It's not even as useless as a placebo, it actively causes stability issues trying to use it. At least it did on my laptop.

It allocates free space on your external storage device as extension to your ram.
Of course, external storage is really fucking slow compared to DDR.
I actually use it when booting into Windows because my laptop has Intel Turbo Memory installed. Still useless though.
>>58256663
I actually like a lot of Microsoft's products, but they're really fucking stupid sometimes.
Pic related. Something I've only ever used because of a locked setting at work.

I created one because of this image. Apparently it's just a sync'd folder
>>58256728
>>58256732
It syncs with another folder, so you can use it with a flashdrive that goes from say your home computer to your work computer and back.

This was useful in the 2GB/4GB RAM era. Flash storage has traditionally been faster than HDDs on small read/writes. Although they lose out on sequential read/writes
Windows places smaller files on the flash drive so it can access those faster.

It had a use back in the Win32 days, now it's just kept around for backwards compatibility
>>58266677
>now it's just kept around
Depreciated in Win 8, removed in 10.
Granted I'm sure a lot of us are still on 7, but Microsoft has officially axed it.
>>58256750
I use it mainly for the "measurement" tool that makes it easy to calculate angles in images. Otherwise I'd have to use something like MSPaint to find the pixel coordinates of each point and plug them into a spreadsheet or something.
>>58256737
When does the sychronization actually happen though? As soon as you plug the drive in? So if I download a gig of documents onto my flash drive on another computer, does it sychronize as soon as I plug it in to my main computer? And how does it resolve situations where the flashdrive's folder and the computer's folder are edited independently before being synchronized?
And is there something similar for Unix-like operating systems?
Sorry for the autism, I'm just curious.

I mean in the context of when Windows 7 came out, at that point it was backwards compatibility. But Microsoft still isn't going to keep that kind of legacy support around forever.
>>58252079
>>58256737
Ohh
I always thought that "syncs folders between systems" meant different operating systems and not like different computers and I always thought it was a broken feature
That sounds neat af desu senpai

>When does the sychronization actually happen though?
Play around with it yourself. Make a test folder, copy paste some funny jay-pegs into it, put the folder into a brief case, and make changes. You'll see.
If that sounds like too much work, see pic related. It updates when you hit the "Update All Items" button in the briefcase. It then compares the original files to the one in the briefcase and will say there's no changes or make a list of what's changed.
In pic related, I renamed one file in the briefcase and edited a different pixel for the same file in the original folder and the one in the briefcase. As you can see, it sees the renamed file as deleted and wants to remove it from the original folder, and it sees the new name as a new file and wants to create that in the original folder. For the file that's been edited both in the briefcase and in the original folder, it says "skip (both files modified)."
For any of these choices, I can right click and change the action being done for when I hit the update button. For the file being skipped, I could have the file in the original folder being replaced by the briefcase file, or I could have the briefcase file be replaced by the original folder's file, and so on.
I'm actually finding this really nifty, although it took me about 10 seconds to figure this out by testing it myself and about 6 minutes now to compose this post. I should have made you do it yourself.
