WD Blue or Seagate Barracuda. Pick the brand that you prefer, they're pretty much identical in every way.

>b-b-but muh durability
It literally does not matter. Standard desktop storage use will not stress the drives much at all. All drives will eventually fail, as long as you have backups it'll just be a minor inconvinience. Don't pay extra for meme server drives unless you stress the drives hard or downtime costs money for you.

8 are in a RAID, some get swapped through a USB SATA dock for backup as a virtual tape library, the rest are unused right now. some day when i have more money ill get around to buying some 4U super micro chassis with SAS expanders and bring them online.

Its on a Server 2016 SMB share which has dedup enabled, and windows can't properly calculate the actual file size because of it; size on disk is just the size of files which havent been processed by dedup

Have 2 HDDs with a copy of the same shit.
One dyes immediately buy a new one and copy.

Never use RAID its cancer.
Unless you want to use RAID 0 its only a faster JBOD.
>>
How does this sound as an idea?
I have three 1TB hard disks to store 2TB of data.
Half on the first, half on the second, and the third is what I'd call a "parity drive" that allows errors to be corrected, or if a drive fails for all the data to be recovered.
Here's how it works:
For every nth bit on disks A and B, the nth bit on C will be the modulus of the difference of A and B, allowing full data recovery. For example, if the two bits on A and B read 00 or 11, then C has 0; 01 or 10 records 1. So long as two disks are functional full data recovery is possible.

Does this sound like a good idea for archiving data? Is this something that is already done?
>>

>>
>>58244160
Yes, this is called RAID 5. Calculate two independent pairities and you can withstand two drive failures, this is RAID 6.

mdadm on Linux can do this, as can ZFS. Btrfs can but you shouldn't use it because it's still buggy.
>>
>>58244160
Stupid.
Will suffer RAID failure.
If one bit gets demagnetized the whole RAID shit fails with no possibility of coming back.

RAID and other technologies can deal with full HDD/SSD failure where one drive reports its dead.
If the data becomes inconsistent its fucked and knows not what to do.

3 ssds in raid 0 on the machine.

Network drives are usb drives attached to my server/nas/plex/torrenting/htpc located under my tv. 1tb drive (torrents) is used for active torrents, media is used for backups and tv/movies (torrent files are copied to this drive by sickrage/couchpotato. They are not seeded), games is used for game-install files that I want to keep (some GOG installers from GGN and the likes. Some are still active, some are not).

Will remove nas from the box eventually and get a nas so that I can expand storage space beyond USB drives.

No, not that meme drive. A small one, only 1TB portable drive.
>>
>>58253189
Seriously what the fuck is it with Seagate, I thought it was limited to only the shit from the factories that got flooded or whatever.
>>
>>58244191
I have 2 on 1 disk because photoshop 7 does not support partitions greater than 1tb.

Personally I buy a new HDD(yours is starting to show funny behaviors) since this one starts acting up. I have a mirror so I can use the mirror + new HDD from now on.

Also my HDDs are encrypted so I can simply sell the drive after purging (not deleting, purging) its contents and installing linux over it.

Then I sell the defective HDD for some money, maybe a idiot buys it and it will fail after a year for him.
Or use it for a scratch disk for some projects and media so its not a problem when it dies.

Also to all
>I have nothing to hide so why encrypt LOL
People
I hope to god your HDD is filled only with pirated games and movies and light illegal stuff.
If the buyer tries to recover the data you can be fucked.
I think I'm safe with my encrypted from start -> purge -> instal linux ->delete linux
Strategy. What do you think anons?

Meanwhile, the only drives I've ever had fail on me are WD drives one external(1TB) and one internal(4TB). I still got two Seagate externals, one 6 years old still alive and kicking.

I think the older ones are pretty reliable, i have one 320GB barracuda hard drive from 2010 and still going strong with only one reallocated sector that appears two years ago. Now i only use it for experimenting with linux distros though.

>how to archive sites properly
For YT channels I recommend youtube-dl simply have a script for the channels that interest you.
For example lets say you https://www.youtube.com/user/MemoryHoleTube so you write
youtube-dl -cit https://www.youtube.com/user/MemoryHoleTube
In the appropriate folder where you download the whole channel with new videos and the like.

For website its tricky wget is iffy for me and I personally use HTTrack however get ready for not having the ability to download mega websites.

HTTrack is best for old web style websites where 1 website = 1 channel of one dude not some uber aggregator of channels.

I also use a specific program for getting boorus (if you are interested in this), trust me you are torturing yourself if you browse the images with the web interface.

The latest wank fest was when berings channel got emptied he was fun however he fucken used copyrighted music in his videos him getting cleaned was inevitable.
All the fag boys where pissing and shiting themselves while I was laughing my ass off with my archive.

Also with regards to all auto downloaders remember to experiment and in the beginning test test test.
If the process is taking to long stop it and see what is going on, look at the output, see if you are not downloading the internet or some shit.
Write down the exact parameters you used to get for the program and use this setting after you brake it in.
Also if the program is extra autistic, remember to write what does not work or results in bloated shit.

Enjoy.

C is an SSD.
E is two physical SSDs combined as one logical drive. No striping, it just spans both drives.

There is a joke that they are named sea fate, generally Seagate is cheap and suffers a little on the reliability front.

Personally I use Seagate and have 2 drives in a mirror I figure its better this way then having 2 WD. I prefer having a mirror to one HDD that is told to be reliable.

Only really limited by my backup at the moment. Considered a NAS for a little while, though now I'm not sure.

's okay. I dread the day when one drive of the NAS dies as the controller can't into hotplugging and I need to power that shit off. Or expansion for that matter.

How would one possiblely have space for that, and what if one drive goes down? Surely it's some flavour of raid to prevent that?

Yes I am going to chuck it after all. I am the type of hoarder that even if it does not develop any more issues I would not feel safe for the data stored on it. I am more worried about data corruption than loosing data as I do backup everything at least twice. There is nothing worse than backing up corrupted data.

Im about to get a new 2Tb HDD as a main drive, retire my scavenged samsung and seagate barracuda, both 320 gb and keep just a 500gb wd drive for backup important stuff, I need something cheap so wd or toshiba?
>>
>>58259139
Toshiba are generally cheaper. If you are in Yurop you can get an even cheaper Intenso. They are a Germany company that sells Toshiba hdds under their Intenso brand but you get a Toshiba drive on the box indistinguishable from a Toshiba drive. In fact if you have to rma I believe you do it directly with Toshiba.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
