Once they start failing they turn into read only mode.
They cant fully fail but they stop working.

>Have a Seagate 1TB for 10 years now
once you break the two year barrier your drive will live for a long time. Also regular HDD maintenance helps (formatting yearly, spinrite)

But all the drives tested are subjected to the same conditions.
So while it doesn't accurately shows real world data, it does show resilience to failure.

SpinRite is literal snake oil, son. And formatting doesn't touch the actual data.

Nah, only if your drive's about to be fucked for good. I don't buy into its supposed "preventative maintenance" part.

Not the same conditions most people here will be running drives. Cold starts, spinning up and down frequently and fluctuating temperatures are worse than running 24/7 in a stable environment.

True, but if drives from one brand show a lot higher failure rate in those controlled condition, I can imagine it's even worse in a home or work environment.

So you're saying, once you purchase one of their good ones you'll have a good one? It's not about your individual experience with a drive, it's about aggregates. A company that has the lowest failure rate means lower chances of having a drive go to shit, a diceroll. Go ahead and buy 20 WD drives, at least one will probably fail within the year. It would take 100 Hitachi drives for one to be likely to fail.

I'm guessing seagate and WD just have a more generous return policy.
