I've only ever used Windows Firewall as my first line of defense, is there a freeware firewall that is better?

Windows Firewall is fine for most consumers. 3rd-party software firewalls on the same box as a Windows one is a meme, and has been since Vista.

good to know, I fit in the "most consumers" catagory.

I mean it fucking stops packets. What are you expecting the differences between firewalls are going to be? Put restrictive rules on it and nothing gets through. It's basically the same fucking security as iptables and pf, those are all fucking garbage and useless if someone gets root privileges on your machine just like Windows Firewall is.
>Windows Firewall is BAD
>it's letting shit through after I said yes to all the prompts it gave me!
It's as good as the rules that it uses are. Same as iptables. Same as pf. Same as whatever the fuck.

It's ok I guess, it's a firewall, it blocks things. But I just don't get how it works and if it works, everything seems to run OK and from time to time there's a pop up but programs start anyway.
I use tinywall, it's light, it's simple, I feel like it works, I have a whitelist with 3/4 programs I trust and if I need a new program for a short period I just deactivate it.

It's a network firewall, not some kind of anti-malware thing. UAC will prompt you and stop things from running if they ask for admin privileges on startup. Odds are shit will fire up fine but will just throw errors (or simply fail to work) when you try to use network features. I don't know of any programs that gracefully tell the user that network connectivity isn't possible after checking on startup.

use tinywall to have some fine tunning settings, but mostly regular windows firewall with the regular settings is ok for any user.
If you want a better firewall you need to check what options your router has.
