Either get blank key caps, or get a uniform set like DSA or G20 so you can change the layout with ease

Well I don't mean the keycaps so much, as the effort of relearning a layout.

Have you tried one?

The only situations it doesn't work in is gaming and extensive number entry. The number entry can be fixed with a numpad. For everything else it's legit the best layout. It feels unnatural to me using anything else now, so I've got a Chink Gateron HHKB on its way now for home use.

Reposting my layout so you know I'm not blowing shit out my ass.
>>

> it doesn't work in is gaming
It works fine in most FPS's, but it sucks for metroidvanias that use the arrow keys.
What games does it not work well for you?
>>
>>58214336

Anything that uses arrow keys or relies on F1-12 keys. Counter Strike and GTA5 are the two games that immediately come to mind

Is that a 2u LShift? Fun times.

Check out the chink XDA keycaps, they have support for like fucking everything.

The HHKB should work well enough for that.

True, but it's just slightly disorienting to do so when driving.

It's not that big a deal really, especially when I've been using a controller these days. But in the interest of not being a blind fanboy you've gotta give criticism where it's due
>>
>>58213888
High end stuff your looking some older designed stuff like micro switches and model Fs. Since those have weird layouts something like complicated alps would be the way to go
>>
>>58214479
The only website I found which sold parts is that weird polish store, and it didn't seem like they had all the same parts as the ErgoDox EZ bundle.

In particular, I liked the idea of those individually formed blank PBT caps that come with the ErgoDox EZ, and fuck trying to find PBT caps with those shapes and sizes from any other retailer.

Plus, I'm not sure what benefit I would gain from building one myself.

>>
>>58214595
Omron has always failed at making mechanical switches for keyboards all the way back since the 80s, and that switch is no exception
>>
>>58213888
What? No, the shitty Cherry clones are entry level generic trash.

Cherry and Gateron is mid-level, then modded Gats or vintage Cherries.

The high end is beam springs, or Model F-style beam springs.

Topre is for people who like rubber dome trash but want to pay a lot so they feel good about their poor choices, the audiophiles of the keyboard community.

>>
>>58214554
oh falbatech is quite nice, what you said about keycaps is true, i happen to like DSA blanks so it was not an issue for me.
the nice part about building one yourself is the choice and options it gives you in addition to the experience you gain. but the ez is a really nice product. for example i built a walnut case for it, which makes it unique.

>>58214650
The one thing I'm really worried about, and what seems like the biggest downside to the ErgoDox EZ so far, is the lack of a metal backplate.

In practice, how different is the experience of typing on an ErgoDox compared to something like a Filco Majestouch which has a solid metal backplate? I love the tank-like feel of it, the way it resonates, the solid impact feeling you get when doing something like bottoming out your spacebar, etc.

How much will I miss it?
>>
>>58214892
well my ergodox does have a metal switchplate, i made the contact between pcb and bottom a tiny bit dampened because it feels a bit nicer in my opinion, but i can't tell you anything about the ez that is not on their site.

Alright /mkg/ I bought this bad boy with brown switches and it's slightly damaged, they covered it with paint as if you couldnt see it.

This wouldnt be much of a problem if the switches were making normal noises. It seems like half of them make a weird metallic "ping" noise when presses in a certain way while the other half doesnt do that. I dont even have to press them, I can just push on the switch from front to back and they make that sound, really fucking annoying.

Im asking this because this is my first mechanical keyboard and I have no idea how they should behave. Should I just send it back under warranty?

This is my Acer 6311. I have owned it since I was about 12 or so. It was in storage for ages and I just took it out a few days ago over vacation. You should have seen it; it was fucking filthy. Something had leaked all over it. I cleaned it up as best I could. Still feels like a dream. It has these linear Alps clones that feel like how I imagine a Realforce to feel. I might fuck around and take it to work on Sunday.

What is the general opinion on Cherry MX Black?
>>
>>58218549
It's really nice to have the trackball in the middle. You should try it.
>>
>>58221943
Not as good as the vintage black ones or gateron blacks, but okay for being linears and the 10 bucks you get a g80-3000 for.

How do I buy a Pok3r Vortex in europe?
>>
So I tried Cherry Clears and liked them a lot, but had to return the keyboard due to defects.

Then I tried Cherry Browns, liked it, got a Gat Brown board and liked it better.

From what i read Cherry Clears aren't the same, they're 35g linears instead.

So does Gateron offer a Cherry Clear competitor?
>>
>>58222671
With money?

They did, but Zeal got pissy at them for competing with his Zealios, so they stopped.

The only alternatives to Cherry clears are Zealios or Mod switches.

I mean I can't seem to find any website shipping to europe.

Heard bad things about Zealios and wobble, and scratchiness with the MODs though. Might just buy Cherry then.

can mechanical keyboards be washed the same way as cheapo keyboards? involving popping off all of the keys, running the keyboard under the sink, soaking the keys in soapy water, then wrapping the keyboard and keys in a towel for a few days (set in direct sunlight preferably) and then put all the keys back in and use it again? That's how I've cleaned every $10 keyboard I own.

I want to get my first mech board. What should I get if I want:

-RBG (I know it's a meme but I love it)
-MX Browns
-Full/TKL depending on price
-Media keys, either standalone keys or as a secondary key function
-Backside usb port ideally
-Standard key caps
-Sub 200$ CAD (in Canada), as close to 150$ as possible.

I can wait for better deals so if I know what models to look for I can grab them when the time comes.

As the other anon said, a Coolermaster MasterKeys would fit that. It's RGB, has both fullsize and TKL variants, available with MX browns, media control as secondary key functions, a standard ANSI layout and you can find it for 100-130 USD, the TKL being a bit cheaper. What do you mean by backside USB port though? As in an extra USB passthrough? It doesn't have that unfortunately, but it does have a removable micro-USB cable if that matters.

I bought the E-Element Z-77 chinkboard and it arrived just now. It's not that bad to be honest, and the switches are very loud. The backlighting is alright but it's hardwired to be rainbow coloured so you can't change the colours of the leds. I plan on getting new keycaps which aren't in the gaymer font.

I got in on the Dancer and Dasher set, but I realized I won't be living in the same place when they ship since they take a million years to get made.

Im not even sure what my new address will be for a few more months.

Massdrop says changing a shipping address after a drop has ended may or may not be feasible, so basically not helpful to me at all.

I should be updating it months before the estimated ship date, so I dont see any reason it shouldn't be fine.

Should I try to cancel the order? should I wait it out?

My parents already chewed me out for spending 70 bucks on keycaps.

RGB at that price point might be hard to get with Cherry switches if that's what you want, as most of them are around 120~150 USD. Corsair is decent if you're fine with the design and don't plan on getting custom keycaps, specially if you can get it for cheap, but I'd say Cooler Master is a better alternative for a similar price. Under $100 the only RGB keyboards you can find are chink ones with either Kaihl or Gateron switches, and there's more info about them in the OP, but they're not bad, and Gateron is even better in some cases. If you're fine with a 60% keyboard, which IMO is enough for the stuff you play, the Anne Pro is RGB and is about $80.

Those are both good, and the difference is mostly looks, so anything you decide to get is nice.

As for mice, I've always been a wrist player for my entire life too, but this year I've decided to start using low sensitivities and aim more with my arm, and I've improved a LOT. I also mainly just play Titanfall 2, and tried a Deathadder, Steelseries Rival and a G502 with it, and the G502 is my favorite. If you want something similar to the G402 you have but with more really good extras, it's a good pick, otherwise I'd say a G403, which is currently one of the best mice out there.

the plastic rivets on the model M can easily rot away and separate the metal back plate from the flippers causing the switches to not work. All what you do is drill out the broken rivets and replace them with nuts and bolts. You don't even need to full disassemble the keyboard.

Just bought my first mechanical, a Rosewill RK-9000V2 with Cherry Brown switches, and love the feel of it. Running into a strange problem.

The keyboard utilizes either PS2 or USB. I opted for PS2 for the unlimited key rollover. Works great, except when I reboot, my OS (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) won't recognize it until I unplug and replug it. Also, it resets my settings (like key repeat and delay) each time I do that.

Anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this, or even where to start looking?
>>
>>58213460
Guess I should take apart my old one and clean it up. It's been collecting dust for years since rollover is a joke on it.
>>
>>58233668
but why? Or do you just never hit F11 or F12? What are you doing that makes the left hand function keys work for you?

>>58234167
Also, if it matters, my old shitty Dell keyboard I replaced used PS2 also. Didn't have this issue with that one.

Got my first mechanical keyboard for Christmas, a Tomoko full sized keyboad with blues. I mostly like it, but the spacebar makes a thunk noise when it comes back up and it is really irritating. Since it is my first one, I'm not sure if that is normal or not.

Typing on it is nice, but playing games is kind of annoying with all the clicking and clacking.

I have this keyboard and love it (since it's the only one I've been using the past ~2 years coming back to PCs) but the numpad makes it too big/long.

Any recommendations for a replacement? TKL/60. I dunno all this switch stuff.
>>
>>58236693
Do you want loud or quiet?

If loud, buy anything with Cherry MX blues. Lots of brands make them.

If quiet, buy a Leopold 750R with silent reds.
>>
>>58236748
I'm more concerned about the feel/response of the keys. I keep reading some switches cause accidental typing errors.

With this keyboard you have to push all the way down for the key the activate are browns like that?
>>
>>58236830
No. All Cherry MX switches have additional travel after the actuation point. Usually there's 4mm total travel and they actuate at about 2mm. Clears have a very noticeable tactile bump near the actuation point. Blues and greens have an even more noticeable bump and click. Gaterons copy the Cherry designs and are therefore nearly interchangeable. Alps-family switches follow similar rules. You've come to the right place.

Brown, maybe blue, I don't like the clicking too loud

ANSI

100% preferably but 80% would do

Use a daskeyboard with brown switches at work but it sometimes won't respond and the light would be out unless I unplug it and plug it back in or restart my pc, it does this for other pcs too

>>
>>58236892
So basically they all respond the same, only difference is sound/slight feel?
>>
>>58237157
No, there are huge variations in feel, even between switches that are nominally equivalent but made by different manufacturers. For example, Gateron browns are well known to feel smoother and more tactile than Cherry browns, even though one is a clone of the other.

The one thing you can rely on, though, is that Cherry switches (and most mechanical switches in general) only have to be pressed about halfway down to register a keystroke.

where can a noob get to try all the switches in canada? All I could find was those shit ass Romer-G switches from logitech at staples.
>>
>>58236830
You probably won't find what you're looking for in Cherry MX, as all of them activate at ~2mm while what you have activates at ~4mm; you have to "bottom out" for it to work.
This applies to almost any mechanical keyboard.
Keep in mind that you will probably not have issue with accidental actuations/activations once you learn it well enough.
If I were you, I'd buy a keyboard without worrying about "accidental typing errors."
For a first mechanical keyboard this isn't too bad or costly.

Keep in mind that it is loud, but not too much worse than the keyboard you pictured.

What's the difference between Filco and Leopold again? Costar vs Cherry-type stabilizers (or w/e they're called)?

Personally I love Filco's costar-style stabilizers. The cherry-style stabilizers always make it feel like the shift button is harder to press because of it, plus you're missing the godly sound the metal stabilizer bars make when they hit the caps

if you like how the keyboard looks but don't like the red leds, there are plenty of options in the same price range with rgb or no leds that look similar and will probably be built better.
