Long story short, I got this phone as a present, but fucked up chinese UI won't let me operate properly with widgets (also no rooting is possible yet and let's face it, it will never be). Basically I want to flash a custom ROM on it, probably Cyanogen 13.

Do you know of another smartphone with the same/similar specs so the flashing will result not in bricking?
>>

yes no yes meh
>>
>>58211227
>Do you know of another smartphone with the same/similar specs so the flashing will result not in bricking?
Sorry but it doesn't work that way. The custom ROM needs to be made specifically for that model for it to work. And if it doesn't even have root I really doubt it'll have custom ROMs available.
>>
>>58211221
What do you value more, battery life or performance? 5" or 5.5"? Planning to install a custom ROM?

Also you might want to wait until Redmi Note 4X is announced
>>
>>58211327

battery life ideally, but do want the power to kick in when needed. Definitely want to install a custom ROM.

Why do people believe that budget phones are somehow not up to manufacturing standard? Do they not realize that their $900 memephones cost under $250 to produce? They're literally paying for marketing payroll, not hardware or quality assurance so this entire concept of "omg chinkphones must be of lesser quality" is retarded.

Samsung Galaxy S6 for the past two years has worked great for me. However, the home button is shitting the bed and is not registering my clicks or plenty of times goes straight to the camera, which barely happens when I actually want it to.

I'm in the market for a new smartphone. My must have features are:

- Wireless charging
- Fast access to camera
- Mobile Data toggle in notification dash

Nice to have:
- Fingerprint recognition

out of the 4 phones you mentioned only the RN3P and ZUK have custom ROMs available. RN3P gets around 8-10h SOT and the ZUK around 5-6h. The SD650 in the RN3P is less powerful than the SD820 in the ZUK, but near equal to last year's flagship SoC SD810 so still more than powerful enough for pretty much anything you'd do on a phone.

>Axon 7

>Pros
-great build quality. It looks very nice in gold.
-great screen
-flagship tier processor, ram, and gpu
-amazing audio
-expandable storage up to a 256gb MicroSD on top of 64gb internal. This makes it better than the OP3 imo if you aren't into custom ROMS
-$350, ridiculous value
-great battery life and quick charging
-dual sim, works with CDMA and GSM

>Cons
-no waterproofing
-camera has a trash auto focus and isn't good in low light. The camera is good in manual mode in well lit venues.
-capacitive buttons aren't backlit
-locked bootloader

>In defense of the OS
I think a lot of the changes here are welcome. A clear all button was added to recent apps, along with the ability to lock apps so they aren't accidently cleared. A neat toolkit is included. A service where ZTE pushes new 1440p wallpapers everyday to the lockscreen helps show off the great screen. Dolby ATMOS isn't a gimmick; it really works.

>verdict
A very nice looking, well thought out, powerful multimedia centered phone at an amazing price. If you are more into custom ROMS and want to spend a little more money, I'd get the OP3. If you are more into multimedia, this phone really wins with expandable storage, great screen, and God tier audio (for a phone).

I wouldn't wait for the Axon 7 max or drop down to the Axon 7 mini. The 7 max has a stronger processor, but has a 6" 1080p screen. The mini is only $50 cheaper but worse in every way, except for the audio.

>>
So I want something around 300 Freedom bucks. I accent display (minimum 5.5"/FHD), battery life, metal body and smooth system. I don't plan any custom ROMs simce I have other device for fucking with. I don't give a shit about audio/waterproofing/NFC and other pretentious shit. I don't need removable battery. I would like at least decent camera, but that is negotiable. Frequently updated system is definitely a plus.

So far my champ is Redmi Note 4. Are there any alternatives which come close?

Recently bought a consumer wireless moto g4 play from Target for 100$ and coming from a Z3 with a dying battery and finnicky charging port I'm completely satisfied. Plenty of power to do everything i want to do and i don't feel obligated to use a case because I spent so little on it if it gets fucked in a years time I'll just buy another one. My only gripe is the lack of an LED notification light but it isn't effecting me as much as i originally thought it would, almost put me off of the phone completely.

Best camera on market, great specs overall.

Way overpriced for what it is, problems with sound, some reports about problems with battery at low charge.

Quite ugly on outside, but nice software.

IMO unless you care enough about camera and non-chink customer support so much that you'd pay double price, there really isn't a reason to get it over OP3T for example. (which I just did few hours ago)

So, I was really excited to get the Axon 7. I was in love with it's duel front speakers and low price, but everything I've read about that phone says the software is filled with ridiculous bugs. Guess I'll have to forget about it.

Now I'm considering the OP3 and the HTC 10. I was looking at the Xperia XZ, which also has front speakers, but it seems pretty underwhelming for the price. My uncle thinks I should get the Galaxy S7 unlocked.

At 5" you have very good phones such as ZUK Z2, Redmi 4 Pro or Mi4C to consider, under that and it's mainly budget phones with terrible specs.

Though as far as budget phones go, the Moto E is probably one of the better options.
>>
>>58215216
The software is fine. A few of the issues people had with the software just got fixed in an update. The devs seem to be responsive to the community. It's also $350 now on Amazon.
The main issue is its camera, but you can't expect a Google pixel or iphone camera on a $350 phone, much less one that refuses to compromise in so many areas like the axon 7.

You wanna root that shit, you absolutely need a PC because youre gonna have to unlock the bootloader as well, as for the knox thingie you can just flash the original rom on it and youll have your warranty back, its not 100% guaranteed and probably wont be for another year but thats all you got for now.

Unlike what
>>58215442 said, there are bugs. Like 2 "big" ones that can be dealt with pretty easily.

1. Apps force closes on screen off.

Due to weirdly aggressive battery management, certain apps (significantly Spotify) start to get kicked out of memory after about a day of phone on. This is annoying, but a reboot fixes the problem immediately and lasts approx. 24 hrs. Moreover, the phone has a scheduled reboot function that you can set up so it reboots automatically while you sleep and you'll never notice the issue.

2. Some apps not properly pushing notifications or starting up.

I personally experienced this problem a few days ago when my alarm didn't go off. Again, it is caused by the over aggressive battery management built in. This can also lead to email or text notifications not working for some people. But again, the battery management can be modified on an app by app basis, and disabling these functions fixes the problem.

All other "big" issues have been fixed on the US version as of the most recent update (e. g. Signal issues or the notification bell). I'm not saying this is 100% the best phone for you, there are plenty of other quirks to the software that come with the territory. Those quirks have been done to death by you tube reviews.

S6 and OP3 used to have very similar issues caused by too aggressive battery management, and both got fixed shortly after they launched. With the OP3 you could even fix it yourself simply by changing 1 or 2 values in the developer settings.

I'm guessing the reason it hasn't been fixed yet is that it's coming with the nougat update
>>
>>58216605

Look anon, there are different levels of Chinese phones. This phone ain't the same kinda crap that you'll get for $150 off AliExpress, okay. This is the kind of phone you walk out of an average best buy with.

Is it perfect? No. But what phone is?

Go spend like 10-20 minutes, maybe more, looking up reviews of the phone on YouTube and report back to me if you have more questions.

I have watched a lot of videos and articles actually and I'm very impressed, especially since I'll be using it for music the most which it's clearly good at if not the best. But something in my gut just keeps me from biting the bullet. Maybe I should wait a bit until the software is more mature.

Fair enough dude. I had the same feeling when I was deciding what to upgrade from my Nexus 5 to. However, there is no way you're going to get a better deal on it that what you can right now with holiday sales, this thing is amazing at 350 bucks.

According to the devs, nougat is slated to release in January. I wish I could give you details on how that will look, but those in the beta had to sign an NDA (and I obviously didn't get in). So software maturity is coming, but this isn't really the phone to go crazy with Roms and stuff on. I do miss that about my Nexus, but otherwise I'm liking the phone.

I think one of the main appeal for these budget samsung galaxy phones are that they come with AMOLED displays which are a little hard to find in phones under $400. Looking at the specs it also comes with microSD, FM radio, 3000 mAh removable battery, and NFC if you care about muh android pay.

It might be better to wait a week or two more for the 2017 version to come out which is supposed to be upgraded with a 1080p display and have a nicer design.

A lot of people on the ZTE forums say this doesn't fix the problems. Maybe their phones are worse off?

>I'm not saying this is 100% the best phone for you, there are plenty of other quirks to the software that come with the territory.
I'm fine with a few quirks, and I'm even okay with it not having the best camera of it's class. But the fact that it needs to be rebooted everyday isn't a good sign. I know everyone is waiting for the nougat update next month and hoping it'll fix everything once and for all. Do you think it will?

It's nice to hear from someone who owns one.

>>
>>58217281

Well, the fixes seem to work for me. I've not had any issues with notifications and my alarm works now. It could be their phones are either the Chinese or global variants, which are on different Roms from the US version.

>I know everyone is waiting for the nougat update next month and hoping it'll fix everything once and for all. Do you think it will?

Oh boy, that's really the 350 dollar question isn't it.

Short answer: Maybe

Long answer: People on the forums and XDA say that the issues I've mentioned only popped up one or two updates ago, and are not even an issue on the global ROM because of differences in settings. It seems like every update changes things, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse. I've only had the phone since black Friday, so I can't give you any personal experiences. I think that with how much people complain about the battery management issues, ZTE will have to fix them. But seriously anon, I don't think "everything" will be fixed in one update, I just hope most things are. And there are worse things to do besides a reboot to make a phone usable.

>>
>>58217506

it's not that bad, I would use it, it's a high end phone and will do whatever you want, selling such a nice gift would be kind of crappy

a lot more people on here would use iPhone 7s and there would be less hate for them if they could hand over 800bucks for a phone, i promise you that
>>
>>58217614
>>58217655
You're absolutely right with those sentiments, the gift was actually meant for my mom though. She didn't like it because it was too big for her so she gave it to me. I figured that since it had already been passed on once, what happened to it from that point wouldn't matter so much.

But after some thought I'll give the phone an honest try. It's just awkward because I had stuff like SyncThing set up for my Moto and I detest iTunes as a program. Hopefully Clementine should work okay with it.

No problem. Happy to put all the research I did to work.

Obviously, if you live in the US you want the US version that has the right bands. Pretty much all major sellers have it at $350, except for the ZTE website where it's full price. I would go with best buy personally, they are selling it with a free 50 dollar gift card. If you want though, you can get it on Newegg and get a free set of overpriced, meh tier headphones. I wouldn't do that though, cause $300 for this phone is insane
>>
>>58217810
It is a good phone, but the novelty wears off pretty fucking fast, after youre done setting up your apps and transfering some music/videos/images to it there is absolutely nothing else to do unless you really like to use memebook, snapfag, twatter etc daily since most social apps are optimized for ios, there arent any good ios exclusive games either, thats why most people here will tell you iphones are for normalfags, niggers and dumb women, it has everything they could ever want all in one nice package and it doubles as an homosexuality/status symbol for the vain or rich aka them.

With an android phone there are a lot to choose from and once you do it can be customized extensively even without root, if you do root it you can then fuck around with custom roms, xposed, audio enhancers, over/underclocking and other little tweaks like modifying the onscreen buttons, adding or modifying gestures/buttons and more, your phone will always be different from the others.

It is likely not the best but it sure is great:
Doogee Y6 Max.

I got mine a week and a half ago, so I can't tell you too much about it. So far I am very happy with it, the screen is great, the sound is great and the cameras are surprisingly good even in low light. I didn't expect them to be, most cameras on low-priced phones like this are so-so but this one really impressed me with it's cameras. The battery seems to last rather long, too.

I didn't actually buy it as a daily driver, though, I wanted a 7"-ish tablet and found that a 6.5" phone would give much better bang for the buck than the tablets available.

Not him but you're forgetting about the 2016 CDMA variant of the J7, that $149 boost mobile one on amazon.

I have it and can comfirm it is one of the 2016 variants with 2GB of RAM and does in fact have the snapdragon 615. A little bit slower but still has 8-bit HEVC hardware decoding.
>>
>>58229236

The bootloop everyone is talking about happens randomly, I know because it happened to me about 4 weeks ago on my LGG4. It sucks because you fuckin lose everything and it can happen at anytime. Essentially it's a timebomb and if you want longevity then do NOT choose LG. For the record I didn't add shit to my phone other an mp3 player I don't do the root thing that everyone does.

You'll probably wind up worrying about touchwiz though. So try finding a HTC 10 for that price or look towards used flagships. Longevity isn't really a thing with android though unless you get comfortable with flashing roms.

There's no chance to find the HTC for such a low price here. The other anon said Lumia is ok, so what's your take on it?

>>58229453
I can indeed afford pretty much any phone on the market but at the moment it's not wise for me to spend much money on a phone. My birthday is on Saturday and parents have promised to sponsor this phone for 200€ and everything above that comes from my own wallet. 400€ is the absolute maximum, because I need to save money. Such is the life of a student.
>>
>>58229561
I think Lumia hardware can actually be quite nice and unique in design comparison to competition. The 950 especially is pretty great, so with that hardware you can't go wrong. However, it's windows phone. For that reason alone I can never get into any lumia devices seriously as a daily driver. You might love it though (if you know you won't be missing any apps), so I recommend seriously heading into any electronics store and trying it out before deciding on it.
