Long story short, I got this phone as a present, but fucked up chinese UI won't let me operate properly with widgets (also no rooting is possible yet and let's face it, it will never be). Basically I want to flash a custom ROM on it, probably Cyanogen 13.

Do you know of another smartphone with the same/similar specs so the flashing will result not in bricking?

If you want to flash it,why u don´t flash root?
Try root with kingoroot.
