fuck off generals need to die, if you can´t build a pc you should fuck off to reddit

do lower ram timings equate to a significant performance improvements when it comes to ddr4? how big of a jump would i see from a set of 15-15-15-15 @3200mhz vs a standard 16-16-16-16 @ 2400mhz. I'm looking for improvements in terms of rendering videos and 3D rendering.

Is there an autism section for the mentally challenged? You would fit in well.

What's a good budget graphics card that probably won't be used that much?
I don't really play games on PC that require a GPU. It's mostly used intensively for emulation and some game dev stuff.
>>
>>58210345
750ti. I don't really know the AMD equivalent.
>>
>>58210433
They're more expensive than I was hoping for.
Right now I've got an RX 460 which has double the memory for around the same price but I won't use the card that much .
>>
My specs:

I5 6600k (scared to OC because I don't understand much about it, so I permanently ramped it to 3.9ghz)
H115i
16gb DDR4-2400
Gigabyte, Z170, SLI board
1060 Gaming X 6gb
Strix 970 (mostly used for mining)
600w PSU
240gb boot SSD
2x1.5tb HDD's for storage
Blu-ray drive
Black Phantom 530
Razer Naga, 2014
Razer Blackwidow Ultimate, 2016
Pair of cheap, but nice, bassy speakers
27" 1080p main monitor
1280 by 1024 secondary

Not an amazing build, but more than enough to be relevant for several years.
Thoughts?

Doesn't matter. Water being much more thermally conductive, and easily putting the warmth from that water into the atmosphere via a nice sized rad, will always provide better temps, especially when overclocking.

>>
>>58210559
It's stupid.
Mobo is just retarded, cooler is minimum for i7 OC, 3000 RAM is cheaper, that's a budget case, don't get it for such a build. If your PSU isn't G2, get the G2, Keyboard is trash.
Also, do NOT listen to this retard: >>58210646 >>58210926 >>58211141 Noctua NH-D15 shits on most AIO coolers.
This >>58211177 is also stupid. There's nothing wrong with buying more expensive mobos if you're going to use them, just don't buy meme (((GAMING))) trash.
>>
>>58211203
Well, I get about 14°c idle, even with it permanently at 3.9ghz. I'll see how far I can push the thing later, when I'm not nervous I'll break the thing.

>Well, I get about 14°c idle

No, you don't. Unless you live in siberia that is.
>>
>>58211162
provided your cooler isn't made from cheese, it's literally a case of going into the bios and changing the multiplier/ratio to something else. you could probably just type in 42, save and exit and change nothing else and it'll work perfectly.

then once you learn a bit more you can start trying to push it more/changing voltages etc.

I'm considering a downsize from my Define R5 as it turns out that I don't play PC games all that often and having such a big case that I will never fill is a meme. I'm thinking the Define C would be good since it lets me keep the rest of my components. I am however, looking for a premium build case that's fairly compact with good storage capability, solid top panel, and dust filters. I don't like case windows, but modding can fix that.

When slammed my system probably pulls best part of 600w and i'm only using a single cpu and gpu. I had so much fun overclocking this lot and the shenanigans I had to pull to get there.

I could push 5ghz on the cpu but the mobo can't take it unless I have it on an open bench with more dedicated vrm cooling.

>>
>>58211731

Once I get my zen build up and running my venerable 8320e is going to do a suicide run - I will rig up loads of my spare fans (including several high rpm delta fans), bust out a truly ancient gpu I have (assuming it even works) and simply clock the cpu as high as it can go. With a bit of luck I will break 5ghz on a motherboard no way in hell rated for the sort of power draw that will require (I suspect just shy of 1.5v).

Won't be emulating anything more than GameCube games at most. My old laptop could run Melee almost perfectly.
>>
So I'm in the process of buying a new PC (CPU, RAM, Mobo) since my current mid-range self-built from ~2007 just isn't as fast as I'd like anymore. I'll be using my old ATI 4870 and the other components/peripherals of the old PC.

The decisive performance intensive applications are graphics and photography work, namely running Lightroom, Photoshop, and Illustrator usually at the same time while having a browser with a dozen tabs open.

Ideally, I would use Linux and have the Adobe programs run in a VM as seamlessly as possible; as the seamlessness is an important aspect, I'm not sure about that yet.

tl:dr;
>Adobe suite with large and many files, possibly inside a VM

Right now I'm thinking 16-32 GB DDR4, with a 120GB SSD, which ever speeds fit in my budget.
What I'm wondering is: i5 or i7? What will be the likely performance bottleneck? # of threads, single thread performance, or amount, or speed of ram?

Also, not really the topic of this thread, but if anyone has experience with Adobe products running virtualized, I gladly read it.
>>
>>58211950
How much space do you really need?
If it's just 1TB you should go with a pure SSD instead, fucker.

I overclocked a 6600k to 4.4GHz yesterday, I think I accidentally underclocked it too and it crashed upon startup a few time. Setting the voltage back to "auto" didn't do anything so I just set it to 1.25v (it started off as 1.2v and online says don't go above 1.3v)
Now it's working perfectly, but now that I actually did fuck with voltages I'm scared to do it again. I increased my voltage, does that mean 4.5GHz might work where it didn't before?

Gaming motherboards usually only cost a bit more than the non-gaming (doesn't have as many VRM heatsinks that are yes usually gaymer styled)

You buy a gaming motherboard because it does perform better.
>>
>>58211259
You probably can't recommend one good motherboard with overclocking without asking to get the DELUXE EXTREME CAD $400 ASUS

Just pay $130 for the gaymen motherboard that allows you to OC

The Gigabyte Z170X-UD5 is what i got recently because it was well reviewed for Overclocking and had a lot of power phases, so it wont break for a while.

All gaming mobos are overpriced because of the name tag, normal high-end mobos are not. You should also realize the higher the price the worse it's cost effectiveness, regardless of the name.

from the little that i know about the different types of harddrives you are going to want a Desktop harddrive if youre going to be using a single HDD for regular storage. Since they likely have software built into them to correct Errors. where other harddrives, like Enterprise, are built to be put in Raid, where Errors arent as important since there are redundancies. So if you get errors, it wont fix them.

You creep up the multiplier 100mhz at a time and run a stress test on stock voltage until you find out where it crashes. Then you just nudge up the voltage until it stops crashing and repeat. What is stock skylake voltage by the way?
The bios says that it *was* 1.195v but defaulted to "auto", coretemp is saying that it varies between 1.18v and 1.24v, if I take off "auto" will it just be a constant voltage? Is it 1.195v normally or is that a minimum or what?

For general then I''d recommend an i3 and a somewhat beefy GPU. If you're not doing overintensive stuff then you won't need stuff ilke an i5/7 and $500 GPU.
There's lots of room for improvement/change though. If you think you'll need the extra two cores from an i5/7 then go for it.

I'm getting a new power supply, and I've heard that Raidmax has been shitty in the past, but apparently the 1000w model of the vampire series was decent, So I was wondering if anyone knew if the 700w vampire is ok.

The closest review of it I could find was in russian and the only review I could find of its series was this one

http://www.nikktech.com/main/articles/pc-hardware/power-supplies/5402-raidmax-vampire-rx-1000gh-1000w-power-supply-unit-review?showall=&start=7

It seems that nobody is even willing to touch these things long enough to review them, which sucks since they're like 35 buck after rebate right now.

I was wondering if anyone had any additional info on them.

Oh, then probably.
Depends what kind of stuff you do with it. Does your CPU ever go up to 90/100% with what you do now?

Go download either prime95 or Intel Burn Test. I must warn you this is why you only creep voltage up a little (and you have to be careful with your LLC settings) as these two pieceso f software are torture loads - if you can survive a few hours of this (in a perfect world you'd need to pass a good 24hr torture test but eh) and if your cooler isn't upto the job the chip will get very hot and will throttle and eventually crash to save itself.

Pic semi-related - a cpu being pushed out of spec and the motherboard right on the line (the vrms once they hit 70c on this setup hardlock the system).

There's no 6400k. If you mean 6600 and 6600k, the latter can be overclocked normally and has slightly higher clockspeed. If you're overclocking, get the 6600k. If you're not, the 6500 is better value. The 6400 is something you should avoid, it's clocked so low that you're better off getting an i3 and saving some money.

yeah I'm assuming they're cheaping out on the motherboard since they'd advertise the shit out of it if it was halfway decent.
>>
>>58215945

Depends on resolution, how high you want your settings etc etc. saying "not gaming much" doesn't help if you mean you don't play very often but demand tip top image quality when you do.
>>
>>58215945
Generally(there are, of course, some exceptions like 3GB 1060) it isn't worth getting the higher VRAM model unless you're betting on longevity or planning on a multi-GPU setup. The GPU isn't going to be powerful enough to run games at settings that would require more than 2GB of VRAM anyway.
>>
what's a great high end motherboard that I can do everything and overclock with that isn't a meme gaming one?
>>
GPU: nVidia GTX 1060 6GB
CPU: i5 6500
Cooling: Corsair H55
Mobo: Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 250GB
PSU: EVGA GS 650W
Case: Enthoo Pro

This is what I've put together for a gaming PC that I hope will last at least 5 years. I've no real interest in overclocking anything and have hard drives from my current PC for storage.
I'm looking for some input on potential compatiblity/size issues or if there are cheaper components that perform just as well. Thanks.

So i have a core2duo e6400e system in the mail
it has the intel G965 chipset, and according to HP and a few other sites, doesnt support 3000 series xeons

However, theres also alot of websites that say these lga 775 boards with the 965 chipset DO actually support the 3000 series xeons, since they were just higher binned c2d's to begin with

either way im only out 7$ for a xeon 3075

anyone have personal experience with something like this? getting xeons to work on non-supported chipsets?

Don't get me wrong, the 6GB 1060 is a great GPU, but based on recent history you're better off getting a 480 if you care about longevity.

I'll look into this, thanks. Currently using a Radeon 5850 but it's always given me problems and is currently on the way out, does the 1060 have a short lifespan too?

So liquid cooler or high end fan cooler for high end pcs?
>>
>>58216310
>What do you mean?
I mean you should do more research before you waste your money on that stupidity.
>>
>>58216288
No
Minimum of 256mb of vram is a requirement, my 256mb radeon hd 3450 gets around 20fps on minimum in 800x600
However, you can play cs 1.6 naxed out
>>

Depends on personal preference really, a good aio will perform about the same as a good air cooler

Obviously it's impossible to tell(except maybe if you happen to work at Nvidia), but it would certainly seem likely.

Ok, I need some help.

My sister wants a desktop computer instead of a laptop... And I've been trying to go cheap on it, since it's her first computer, and I don't know how many games she'll be playing on it (At least overwatch... but anything can run that, afaik).
It's a bit hard for me to suggest to really go overboard, since I'm not that much of a gamer myself.

Anyway, so here's the cheap one I came up with.
>PSU: EVGA 430W 80+ standard $45
>Case: Deepcool Smarter $33
>Mobo: Gigabyte GA-F2A88XM-DS2 R3.0 $61 (really hard to find fm2+ mobo in stock)
>CPU: AMD 880K $101
>GPU: Asus GTX 1050 $151
>HDD: WD Blue/7200rpm 1TB

>Total: $449
Then I have some old 1600mhz DDR3 rams I can give her.
She'll need to buy a monitor, too.

The problem is the CPU, it's AMD, and so pretty bad at single core performance... And even multi core performance. So, it could maybe be bottlenecking the GTX 1050.
Additionally, it's kind of dumb to not overlock this CPU, when you'd have an unlocked CPU and a mobo that allows for OC... But then, buying a CPU cooler would then put the total CPU cost at the level of i3-6100 (which also can't be overclock, so good for a first PC).

So then maybe I should get a i3-6100 instead... But then, I'd have to get a mobo with only DDR3, so that she can use my old ones. Which may be wasteful, and even hard to find in stock.
On the other-hand, i3-6100 is very poorly future proofed, since it's only a duo-core. Though it has multi-threading, I don't know if games will completely accept the threads over cores.

What should I do?
>>
>>58216338
lots of extra space, traditional liquid cooling
regular space, air cooling
almost no space, preassembled liquid cooling kits
>>
>>58216404
Yes and that's why the rest makes no sense.

That's something, I guess.
>>
>>58216404
why the hell would you go for the cheaper locked CPU on an enthusiast board? go with the fucking H170 chipset, all the same bells and whistles minus an overclocking utility, and you lose one fucking pcie x16 slot

there is no point to having a non K chip on a fucking Z series board, and vice-versa.

lose the AiO cooler, you're looking at a 6th gen non K chip, heat will never be an issue for you. use the stock cooler, or grab a shitty 3rd party air cooler for like ~$20 if it makes you feel better.

you do not need a 650w PSU, once again, you're running a non K chip, on top of that, both gens of your GPU/CPU are super power friendly.

not rocket science, you obviously didn't do enough research. also, 5 years? please. i'm rocking my third year with my GTX 770, and its finally starting to show its age.

Save up and wait for Ryzen.
Ryzen might cause the Intel Skylake processors to become cheaper, but you will have to also buy DDR4 ram.

Don't impulse buy, you will surely regret it later, like I did.
>>
>>58216499
I read that Ryzen is a $500-800 CPU, so it'll only compete on the enthusiast level.
It'll probably take at least a year until they start to produce cheaper CPUs on the architecture.

Apparently the i3-6100 is overclockable, so maybe it's a good option, then it'll give her some option to possibly upgrade the graphics card, before the CPU is too far behind (but maybe that will happen sooner, since duo-core).
>>
>>58216494
>>58216496
Oh thanks. I'll go with the H170 then, and get a 450W PSU.
My research has only been here and logical increments, I'm a little out of the loop.
>>
>>58216692
You'll most likely only need H170 for SLI. Post your complete build before you pull the trigger.
>>
>>58216661

I'm pretty sure there isn't much of an upgrade for the 8320 without switching to intel or waiting for zen. The 970 really isn't that bad a card either, what resolution are you playing in?

I won't be using SLI, but I do need a lot of USB and SATA ports which is my main concern when looking at motherboards without having to install expansion cards.
Ideally I'd want to be able to run 4 hard disks and an SSD at once. I also wanted to have 4-6 USB ports so I can leave game controllers plugged in.

The left is more or less what I'm using now and have been using since Jan 2010, with the i7 overlocked to 4.00GHz.
Right is what I'm looking at upgrading to.

how to get a cheap w10 key without being fucked in the ass by shady companies (besides microsoft) and without pirating?

Honestly? I would just get another 3x2GB RAM, a new GPU and call it a day.
Maybe a different PSU, too, Athena Power sounds like it's going to catch fire any time.

Any idea how I'd go about starting to identify this motherboard?
>>
>>58217284
You could start by reading the type name and manufacturer right above the upper PCI slot.
>>
>>58217209

Ultra wide 2560x1080. It can't handle much at that resolution on max. Gta v only gets around 35 frames.

I'd be for switching to Intel but which should I upgrade first. Do you think just getting a good gpu and holding out and seeing if zen will be worth while.
>>
>>58217273
You know I might just do that. The graphics card is the reason I'm upgrading anyway, one of the ports on it is surging or something and gives me an electric shock when I touch it.
Not sure whether it's entirely the card or the PSU (which is an Akasa 850W but wasn't on the site) but a modular PSU would be nice.

Thanks for the input it's been very helpful.
>>
>>58217303
Sorry, any idea of the dell IPSKL-VM motherboard is garbage or not. I can't find any information about it online.
>>
ASUS Z97-A or MSI GAMING 5?
>>
>>58217311
Gta v is pretty cpu based. I would switch to skylake, if you have the money.
>>
>>58217331
Garbage for what purpose? What are you doing with it? How much do you pay for it?
>>
>>58217331
The only details I could find are that it comes in some dell prebuilt. Look like the basic cheap board they usually put in prebuilts, it'll do everything you need if you don't need much.
>>
>>58217324
I know Akasa fans and shit, but not PSUs. Imho get a new GPU like RX480 or GTX1060, that should be enough for until your next big upgrade.
For the PSU, see how much W you need and get something like a EVGA G2/3, SeaSonic G or so.
>>
>>58217343

So let's say I wanna get a 6500. What brands are good for mobos now a days. I sort of wanna go micro atx.

All I know is I can't replace it until after the first year (warranty) and the build comes in a tiny ass case which means if I do replace the board I'm gonna need a new case to go with it. I'm just hoping it's not complete garbage, but it's my first new machine in like 6 years so I'm sure it'll seem better (for a while) just don't want to get fucked over.

I'm gonna see what is good/bad about it and after the warranty expires move it to a new housing and fix all the problems it probably has. But first I gotta identify em.
