>Warrant granted for Amazon Echo recordings

>A murder in Arkansas may change the way people behave around smart devices. A warrant has been issued for an Amazon Echo, revealing that Amazon may retain recordings on a server for law enforcement investigations.
>An Amazon Echo was cited in a warrant related to a November murder in Bentonville, Arkansas. While other smart devices were identified, police have pinned some specific hopes on the Echo for a simple reason: it never stops listening.

>However, it provided investigators with Bates’ account details, including purchases. In addition, investigators were allegedly able to recover information from the speakers but did not specify what type.

If the recordings are on a server, they don't need the echo to access them. Do these people not understand how things work

They never said that, the Echo recorded to the Amazon server and then Amazon gave law enforcement the files.

I love how conversations about privacy just turn into arguments you'd hear from 12 year olds. Really helps support your cause.
>>
>>58206124
That's not an argument, and you know it. "Nothing to hide," means that you wouldn't have problem letting anyone see anything on your device.

Saying you don't have a problem with privacy violations because "you have nothing to hide," is like saying you are fine with banning civilian ownership of guns because, "you have nobody you want to shoot," or banning freedom of speech because, "you have nothing to say."

How about this example then.

When people go to the bathroom, they lock the door. Everyone knows what they're doing in there, and everyone goes to the bathroom. Still, we keep it locked behind a door. Why? We have nothing to hide about our bathroom actions.
The answer is basic privacy.

I have nothing to hide either, but I also have nothing I'd like to show.
>>
>>58206206
Amazon is still your door. Government still has a right to break down your door when you take a shit if you kill someone. I don't see a problem with it. No one cares that you're taking a shit unless you're contacting ISIS.

It's really sad, because conceptually smart home is everything we've wanted for years. The only issue is that it relies on big data.

/pol/ talked about it in 2014, the day it was announced. So did /g/. Both pages pretty much agreed that anyone who knowingly paid for an always-listening device would be willingly giving the government access to everything that was said in your home, and that just because you have nothing to hide today doesn't mean that will always be the case. What was perfectly acceptable to say less than a decade ago could be considered racist, sexist, homophobic, or Islamaphobic today. And the government could eventually use what you said privately in the past to fuck you in the present or future.

Even reviewers noted this, saying that stuff they had talked about (like starting a family), but never searched for, resulted in "suggestions" that would make no logical sense unless it was listening.

The problem with the echo is that Amazon never actually answered any questions about it. They said they would, but canceled all the press conferences about it without explanation.

It's proprietary, and the company, which has done plenty of shady shit in the past, hasn't been forthcoming with any information about what the echo retains or how Amazon uses that information. Basically, he uses it to check the weather, to google questions and news articles or listen to audio books while he's on the shitter (he has a dot in there), listen to music in the shower, and to save himself from walking across the room for things that would take well under ten seconds.

I saved a dog's life from two urban youths. They broke his leg and were duct taping fire crackers to his body when I happened upon them.

Telling them to stop had the effect of one of them walking towards me while making threats. Me drawing my M&P Bodyguard got him to stop, and the other to get away from the dog.

6 weeks with a cast later, and the pup was good as new. No lasting effects from his abuse.

Why does me stating their identity matter one way or the other? I already said "urban youths," which is news anchor speak for young black men.

>There is no legal justification for the "proportional force" that you employed.
Threats against my safety justify the use of guns to dissuade, and, if necessary terminate said threat. Therefore, legally, you are incorrect.

>If anything, you're lucky the parents didn't call the cops on you and sue you.
They had no grounds to. They threatened me, which would have been hearsay, but the evidence of a dog with a broken leg and the firecrackers stuck to duct tape would have brought their own children up on charges of animal abuse.

>You should've backed down and called the cops.
Which would have done nothing, as they would have set the fireworks off. They also would have beaten me for telling them to stop (which is my right, as I have freedom of speech, and was using it to dissuade them from breaking the law).

>Would you have been in a fight, just slap the kid.

Every psycho can get a gun and shoot you in Europe as well, but in America you can do something about it.
Like, not living near african american neighbourhoods and watching your surroundings when you're outside.
Do that and you'll more likely get hit by lightning than ever need to use a gun.
>>
>>58207049
You are also forgetting to take into account demographics and the average IQ for each, as well as the "Sweet spot" of criminality (~70-85, which is where the vast majority of blacks fall into, as well as about 50% of Hispanics). We have a makeup of about 13% of blacks and 20 percent Hispanic. Controlling for demographics, White Americans are actually less violent than Europe.

Literally every statistic you read regarding firearms is provided by a lobby. The only difference whether it is pro- or anti-gun. That said, there is a reason that anti-gun arguments are based on emotion, rather than statistics.

For example, Chicago and Washington DC have the most strict gun regulation in the country. DC is essentially a European city, regarding gun laws. Yet gun crime is rampant there, and it's overwhelmingly black on black. Same for Chicago. Same for NYC. Same for LA. How do all these people keep shooting each other, the same way those Islamic guys shot people with fully automatic AK-47s in Paris?

Europe is drowning in immigrants, don't you read the news? Murder rate is still lower. There's no excuse, accept the facts.

If I want to kill someone, I just have to get out of DC, buy a gun, get back in and voila. It's also the same reason why banning guns won't do shit for U.S. in the short term : there are already too many firearms available and easily obtainable. It's not about being illegal, it's about getting them easy. You can also have a gun in EU, but you have to register, pass tests and order from manufacturers, not walk into a shop being an adult.

And Islamic guys going full AK-47 in Paris is quite different from small impulsive murderers : these are organized and prepared, importing illegal weapons from war territories (provided, by the way, by you americans).

Keep convincing yourself you're smarter than the rest of the world.

Or you could make your own pretty easily. Hell, even if you banned them, gun smiths could make fully functioning guns that are "art pieces," rendered not functional until you bore a hole in the barrel of the gun. Not their fault that they modified a piece of art into a deadly weapon any more than its the tooth brush company's fault that inmates craft them into shivs.

Point for you, it's not only availability, it's mentality. If you amerifags keep this shit state of mind there's no benefit from banning. You should really grow up, you're no longer rulers of the world, China bought us all.
