I've got $2000 and I need some advice /g/. High powered laptop, craptop + desktop, or just a nice desktop?
>>
>>58204390
$1500 on the desktop and $500 on a new ThinkPad T series
>>
Do you need a laptop? Do you need a desktop?

Most people just use their phones nowadays.
>>
Get a Razer Core pleb
>>
The cheapest T series is like 818 tho, right?
>>
Buy an Asian
>>
Used T420, 600$ PC and index funds.
>>
>>58204414
This is b8 obv, but is anything like it a good idea? I have seen some that people have made, and they say that they're good but I am suspicious because PCIe is so much faster than thunderbolt or usb.
>>
Hackintosh + Chromebook with remote desktop

$1000 for a Mac and a Macbook
>>
>>58204390
Spen $150 on a Thinkpad at Cash America and the rest on booze, drugs and parties. Socializing is the only way that you can make it in this shit show of life.
>>
>>58204390
MacBook and spend the rest on art supplies

If you're going for a chromebook, never get one with an ARM processor.
Using crouton on ARM it is very limiting and uncomfortable.
>>
>>58204468
Oh, and if you don't have an iPhone already, make sure you get that first.
>>
>>58204463
>500ms delays on everything

but it runs Yosemite, so I got that going for me which is nice. Form over function right guys?

>>
high powered computer with dual monitors
>>
Find a nice cheap laptop that you can get windows on. Yes, windows. Microsoft office can be very useful and does not have good alternatives for things like excel.
The criteria for this laptop should pretty much only be battery life, an SSD, and enough resources to run Windows fine.
Don't get a very powerful or fancy laptop, since you don't need it.
With the rest of your money buy a desktop and use this for all your games or any intensive workload you have. I dual boot Windows 10 and arch and only go into Windows when I want to play something or use Photoshop. Other than that I'm using arch for everything.
>>
>>58204489
This is what I am worried about when it comes to a chromebook. They seem pretty locked down in general, am I just a 'pc master race' cuck?
>>
>>58204493

>>
what major? I'm STEM so having a decent laptop is helpful, as I can run certain software on it that wouldn't be possible with a shittier laptop

but if you're in arts or something, you'll probably be fine with a $400 chinkpad
>>
>>58204521
Is this just a meme for autistic betavirgins or is it actually a thing?
>>
>>58204553
CS, which is why I am worried about a chromebook or something like that. Are the asus ultrabooks overkill?
>>
>>58204568
if you're CS you'll be fine with any ultrabook with an i5
>>
>>58204568
im not really sure what you're doing in cs. if it's just coding, then you'll be fine with most laptops. if you're doing game design or rendering, then yeah maybe a better laptop is needed
>>
>>58204584
Any recommendations?

get a developer edition xps 13

buy a desktop with the rest
>>
>>58204836
yeah its a real thing. web developers and software engineers frequently enjoy mac OS because it's unix-like and has bash tools, + the high build quality. xps 13 + linux does compete, though, if you know what you're doing with your desktop
>>
>>58204390
If you're just taking notes and browsing the internet get a cheap af thinkpad and apende the rest on partying.
>>
IMO the best answer:

If gaming but still want a good laptop:

$1000 desktop, $1000 laptop (don't get an old think-pad their old and heavy) something like a dell xps 13 or an X1 carbon or macbook air

or if gaming but don't really care about portability:

$1500 Desktop, $500 generic 15.6" laptop with an i3, swap in an SSD.

If not gaming:

macbook air or dell xps13 or x1 carbon, with a dock and 2 monitors.

For reference I built a gaming PC and went with a generic 15.6" laptop. Now that I have a job working on campus I kinda of regret it as it's a pain to be lugging around my laptop everywhere.

Also I'd suggest getting a touch screen laptop as their great for browsing stuff in bed
>>
>>58205304
This, a lightweight small laptop to read pdf scripts and internet research is great.
>>
>>58204695
Unless you absolutely need Xcode for your workflow (protip, Visual Studio is better, even still don't use an IDE unless it's Java cancer) then no.
Just dual boot Windows + Linux and do
>>58204406
>>
Desktop and craptop set up as thin client
>>
>>58204668
Not only is all that the ugliest, look-ma-i-dun-fixed-it yokel setup I've seen in ages, but I'm certain you chose all those components purely based on hurr Durr big numbers. Explain to me how you utilize a video card designed mainly for rendering streamed games and CGI editing except to boast about how much you paid and how many cores it has?
Also enjoy your NetBurst, I'm sure that software optimized for Core architecture is performing so much better on your expensive server processors.

Also op probably doesn't want this abortion taking up an entire floor of his dorm
>>
>>58204390
Depends what you're using laptop for, I just spent 200$ on a Chromebook, pretty much does anything I need school wise.
>>
>>58204390
$300-400 laptop that lasts all day and can do your uni work without worry.

$800-900 desktop gayman for decent 1080/1440p gaymin/intense "work"

~$100 masturbation toys

Save up rest for emergencies
>>
>>58207538
Is this some sort of high-effort shitposting or just a particularly hideous example of neo /g/?
>>
OP, if it were me, I'd get a cheap, reliable laptop that can comfortably run a browser and Office and dump whatever cash is left into a decent desktop.

I think the laptop will be the most important part simply because of the convenience of taking it to class or for when you need to write a paper and are away from home.
I'd go for something with at least an i3, 4GB RAM, big ass 9 cell battery and a screen size around 15". A SSD will make things a bit snappier but that's a component that will get better use in the desktop.
I'm not going to specifically mention brands because it's too easy to start a tard war on this board, but do try to avoid brands that are universally regarded as shit (eg Razr).

Also make sure you try typing a bit on any laptops you look at, a big, spacious keyboard with good tactile feedback is a must. A full number pad can help a lot too. Hope some of this helps

Thinkpad t4x0 or x2x0 + SSD + new battery in near future 200-400$
Selfbuilt gayming tower with mediocre (200$) upgradeable GPU 800-1100$
Monitor+mouse+kb 300$ ?

If you splurge all 2000, might aswell get cheap 4k for "tv" use + 144hz gayming monitor then.

or save the rest for booze.

Poverty tier but powerful:
t420 max spec, i7 quad, HDD+SSD, 16gb ram + new battery 450$
egpu setup + psu 100$
gtx 1050 180$

Optional: Ultrabay doc, Monitor, separate mouse/kb
>>

For gaming and all that fancy shit, this is a great pick, assuming you don't give a shit about the slow SD card reader. The keyboard travel is amazing, the 1060 GPU runs GTA 5 without issues and the cooling is actually good. Go get it with an SSD. It's worth.

$700-800 to build a decent desktop. actually, not decent, at $700 or more youll have actually a pretty good desktop. $300-400 on a slightly new ThinkPad, or get an older ThinkPad like a t420 and upgrade the RAM and drive capacity.

save the rest. you'll need it.

I've liked the Elitebooks I've had better than the Thinkpads I've had, and those can be had with an i5 and and SSD for like $300 on ebay from a refurbisher.

Get an i5 and 1060/1070/480/490 mITX system.

The rest goes towards a social investment in booze and weed money.
