Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Would an X230 Tablet (bulky battery included) fit in a standard laptop sleeve on the market?

I'm looking at ones advertised as fitting a 13" Mac, but I'm afraid the Thinkpad will be both too thick and too wide.

I have a t450s and I don't think it really deserves all the hate it gets. If it didn't have the Thinkpad branding it would be a decent laptop.

Despite all that, the build quality is really shit. I dropped this laptop once with my headphones plugged in and now the jack is completely broken. Meanwhile, my shitty old hp laptop survived much worse. Also, I would have liked to see an hdmi port instead of VGA or DP.
>>
>>58204408

If money was no object, would you get an old T420 or a new T460?

I'm a jewy minimalist with a lot of extra money to throw around due to never buying anything. I would upgrade either of them with third party SSD and RAM.

most of the other ones are around similar price, even used. anyone have experience with newegg refurbs?

Already have RAM ready to upgrade it to 8GB and an SSD, will likely also upgrade the screen to IPS in the future

Is Core i5 2025m on T420 decent enough for daily uses?

thx, into the trash it goes!

>>

i have a T430s. I upgraded the RAM to 16GB, the HDD to 2TB and most importantly the display to IPS 1920x1080 because the stock display was garbage. i also have a dock with 2 monitors.

the CPU is getitng old. i actually have a faster work computer and a faster personal computer and i can feel the difference. I'm upgrading within a year or 2. i'm not one of those people that keeps using the same machine for 10 years, i like my CPUs fast.

I get about ~3 hrs battery life in linux, closer to 4 in windows 10. thats with wifi, youtube, music, web surfing, compiling or otherwise working the cpu. it's a 44Wh battery which i believe is the only option on this machine.

the display mod was pretty easy for me. but i've been working on electronics for over 10 years. the guide that came with the LCD cable and board was translated from chinese and could have been better.

this is the problem with a project like the retro thinkpad. it will be expensive because it's niche. if no one buys it the people who worked on it or at least proposed it and drove the program might get fired.

Does anyone else have issues with i3 crashing after resuming from suspend?
I'm running an i3 session in Xubuntu on a Thinkpad x230. I'm using the the ubuntu ppa for the most up-to-date version. I did a clean install and haven't messed with the config to see if maybe my past config screwed it up. The issue still exists.
When I resume, i3 hangs, then crashes to the login manager. Has anyone else experienced this? It happens every single time. I can't determine is it's a Xubuntu issue, an i3 issue, or a Thinkpad issue.

Thanks again, I can also feel my t410's cpu kinda shitting itself compared to my work computer, also I can feel he's slowly dying :/ I think a t430s would keep me satisfied another year or two. As for battery life, seems ok, mine also does like 3,5 - 4hrs with some tweaking.

I'm a tinkered myself, I think I can handle that mod, I want a better screen with my next machine. Where did you get yours from, and for what price (circa) ? Also, any other tips to check before buying ?
>>
Just picked up an HP EliteDesk to use as my main computer. Been using my T420 as my only PC for two years.

I'd like to try out OSX on the T420. Is it better to just do a clean install of OSX as the only operating system? Is there a guide written specifically for the T420?
>>
>>58209598
i got my lcd mod from a poster on the thinkpads.com forum. $50/mod with shipping iirc. they're not always available so you might have to lurk for a little while. you could probably find a cheaper option elsewhere but i wouldn't recommend it. its a fairly close knit community of thinkpad enthusiasts. my mod works great and i haven't had a really bad experience on there.

i haven't done any power optimization in linux for the T430s. I think there are some knobs to twist and buttons to press but I haven't looked into it. squeezing out another 10-20% battery life should be possible.
the T430s is pretty light, which i like because I move around with the machine. The hinges need replacement. luckily a lot of geniune T430s parts are still relatively easy to get.
i have't done the the t420s keyboard mod yet. i'm thinking of doing it. when i replace the hinges in one shot. i'm not keen on the idea of not having working keyboard indicator lights so we'll see.

my man. I got paid to "fix" an older friends t42(with xp on it) about two years ago. He has had it forever, and it was running incredibly slow. I found the problem, it was all the ancient porn he had downloaded on it(or according to him, the person who owned it before had on it) from sketchy websites, along with a bunch of standard malware. So, I asked him if he had anything important on the harddrive, he said no, and I recommended just reinstalling windows and wiping it, because it was so fucked. He asked if that would delete the "smut", I said yes, so he just said no, gave me 15$ for my time and that is the last we talked of it. Great machine though, and I was glad to see a normie still using it.

I have a T450s myself, but with nice options and while this year's iteration had a few downsides to the last model, Lenovo learned and now merged the strengths of both models in the new T470s.

I have some hp elitbook as my work laptop and it's shit. Just get a thinkpad, if you have no money then at least get a used model from last year or something.

The most important thing to a laptop is mobility (battery, power consumption, weight) then screen and keyboard and obviously to some extent performance (ssd, processor).

It's absolutely worth it to invest a bit more if you can, because you're going to use it nearly daily and if it's heavy, you have carry charging cables around and look for the next charging opportunity every 5 hours, screen and keyboard suck etc. then you're not going to have any fun with it. Trust me I did it, and not regretted it a day, I even wrote all this right now because I believe in it that much.

Not asking to be a memelord, I am actually curious, as I am thinking about dualbooting windows 7 and debian on my incoming x201

the x-series still ok
>>
Would the corporate discounts work on the new thinkpads coming out next month?
>>
>>58218003
fucking nope. laptops always look better naked. I cringe when I see macbooks on campus with a lot of awful stickers plastered all over them
>>
>>58221375
win10 and i'm satisfied and don't care. Used to always have some linux for dualboot and fucking around with, but got bored of fucking up and having to reinstall. Since some time I have just windows, my current and previous jobs both required windows, also i don't have much free time at home to fool around with the computer... Thinking about giving ubuntu another shot tho
>>
>>58204025

what's the issue here? the T470 looks good and keeps the thinkpad aesthetic for the most part, just a little more rounded and a slightly lighter color
>>
I am thinking of buying a x201 for ~270$.

I have never bought a used laptop before, what should i know to make sure that i dont get scammed
>>
>>58222281
>X201
>$270

fuck no unless it's been heavily upgraded and has a lightly used SSD
>>
>>58222292
>>58222281
theres another one with similar specs but has an i5 for ~108$, is it worth it?
>>
>>58222332
>$108
Now that sounds more like an X201.

>"but" has an i5
based on that context im assuming the one for $270 has an i7? From what I've heard i5 is still a good choice either way.

What exactly are you complaining about? They look fine to me, better than the buttonless trackpads they had on their Haswell laptops.
>Lightweight
>modern ports
>better screens

Speaking of the x201. My battery currently only lasts ~2 hours. What replacement battery will give me the longest possible use time maybe 4-5 hours or even more if possible. I've seen extra batteries that attach to the bottom. I'm not sure if they are designed for this model. Can someone please recommend the best and longest lasting battery I can buy for x201? I will be using lightweight fedora linux distribution. Thank you very much /g/irls on 4chins that can help me find what I'm looking for.
>>
>>58222292
even with ssd that's a totally shit price. With or without a ssd the x201 shouldnt be anywhere near $200

Most of the things you listed have been on Thinkpads ever since the Haswell laptops or earlier. They're also totally arbitrary "criticism," based completely around an aversion to change (a sign of autism). If you're comparing these new ones to the pre-Lenovo Thinkpads, then sure their keyboards and bodies are not as good, but then why the declarations of "Thinkpads are dead" when they've been "dead" for nearly five years?

Anyway, some of us want modern ports, a decent screen, a big trackpad, compact size, and a good battery life. For us, we're stuck with the Lenovo models.

tldw: you are a moron macbook tier le aesthetics baby
fuck off thinkpads are not for you
>>
>>58223021
there are some chink ones that have bigger than stock capacity
just know that if they don't look fuck hueg compared to the stock one then they're lying about the capacity
>>58222980
you can set it so that it's function keys first, special shit wile pressing fn in the bios
>>58223249
that's some top tier autism
>>
>>58223267
>that's some top tier autism
maybe actually watch the video you fucking adhd millenial
there's legit criticism about why the new keyboard layouts and why the huge trackpad is an awful idea
>>
>>58223249
>Classic Thinkpad vs. modern Lenovo Thinkpad redesign
You didn't read my post. Let me repeat it: If you're comparing these new ones to the pre-Lenovo Thinkpads, then sure their keyboards and bodies are not as good, but then why the declarations of "Thinkpads are dead" when they've been "dead" for nearly five years?

>tldw: you are a moron macbook tier le aesthetics baby
You seem awfully obsessed with aesthetics... I thought Thinkpads were about functionality.
>>
>>58223280
I've seen it multiple times before
yes the keyboard layout is objectively worse
but it's still just fine for every day use (and still better than most other laptop keyboards)
You'd realize this if you've every actually used a thinkpad with the new keyboard layout for longer than 10 seconds
>>
What do the keys for a dock do specifically?
>>
>>58223398
lock the dock to the laptop.
>>
>>58223398
they lock the computer to the dock
>>
>>58223319
are you retarded? lenovo has been making thinkpads for years and the "classic" thinkpad he is using as comparison in the video is in fact a lenovo thinkpad

>You seem awfully obsessed with aesthetics... I thought Thinkpads were about functionality.
you are the one obsessed with that baby shit if you think it's fine to completely fuck over the old FUNCTIONAL design which has been a thinkpad staple since the beginning, AND after lenovo took over production, moron

>>58223328
oh so being JUST slightly worse or "good enough" is justification for fucking up their amazing old design? use your brain
of course it's useable but it's objectively inferior, and how is that okay in any way and why should they continue producing these objectively inferior designs?
>>
>>58223267
>there are some chink ones that have bigger than stock capacity
claim to, anyway, and not a one of them actually delivers on it.

Another sign of autism is that you're focusing on minor details of my argument (which aren't even technically wrong) because you think it proves a point, rather than looking at what I actually said.

Hm... I have to say I'm not impressed with your attempt to explain why the 2017 Thinkpads, and not the ones from all the years before, are the ones that truly put the Thinkpad brand in its grave. Maybe you should see a therapist and he can help you overcome your autism.

My friend actually got one for his x220 that was over stock capacity
thing was fucking huge though (stuck out like twice as far as the stock one, for only like 1.5x the power)

because lenovo is run by chinks and chinks are retarded

It's funny because you're not even denying you have autism. It's okay, I don't hold it against you.

Does Lenovo have a tool to auto-detect drivers? I'm in great need of help... just 20 minutes ago I had no wifi driver.

Is this the proper place to get drivers?
>>
>>58224344
>not lenovo.com
no, just google (laptop model) support and 99.99999% of the time the official website for drivers will be there
also never EVER download drivers from any website but the manufacturers (aka lenovo.com, nvidia.com, intel.com)
