When did you realised that linux is a meme and a waste of time?
>>
ITT we talk about how amazing Linux is in the current year.
>>
>>58201389
At some point, after my system had been perfectly set up and riced.. I actually went back to normal activities and it was a constant pain in the ass. Little things like not being able to properly run Photoshop (3D functions) or install any other program/game without having to look up wineHQ for fucking fixes. I can't properly produce Music because no VSTs.. etc etc. I realized I just used Linux because I wanted to "fit in".. Now I don't give a fuck anymore, it's a waste of time
>>
>>58201389
When I installed pic related for the first time. It's good on servers though. I'm sorely tempted to install it over Solaris.
>>
>>58201389
From day one, but my life is so empty and lonely that it gives me something to do with my free time. If everything worked perfectly, life would be boring.

Linux on the desktop is a fucking waste. It's beyond ridiculous that something as simple as watching video without screen tearing wouldn't work on a standard Linux installation but would on a hacked together Hackintosh installation.
>>

this

linux (for desktop) is supposed to be great, with people working because they want to make it better. That's unlike the corporate morons getting bossed around by shitty managers, resulting in an OS so bad on every level I still can't believe anyone would release it.

The sad truth is that linux has proven to be just as big a pile of rubbish, except that unlike windows you at least get to pick between rubbish A or rubbish B. I think btrfs is the only thing that has never disappointed me. Everything else has always been an instant let-down that rarely even worked properly.

ITT: waaaa Linux is hard and glitchy!

Yes, it is. Because Linux is a hobbyist OS at heart. And hobby projects are not professional products so they will always have little eccentricities here and there and you will likely need to have some familiarity with the consumer version of the product in question before tackling the hobby version.

But the upside to this is most hobbyist projects cut through bullshit and deliver higher performance in certain applications and give more control to the user. And Linux does this

>b-but Linux is used on servers and for scientific research

Because it's cheap and can be adapted for specific usage scenarios. But this is still secondary to the original goal of being a hobbyist OS for people to use at home.

If you want to use Linux as your main OS you have to accept that sometimes you will have to roll up your sleeves and sit down and really READ (not skim) some documentation and go through things step by step. There won't be an easy button because that's not how it is done.

Nobody respects the GPL if they can get away with it

How can you ever prove that a piece of software like CCleaner doesn't just use Bleachbit source code? I mean, it literally does the same thing, but it's proprietary.
>>
>>58206128
A similar situation is playing out right now in a lawsuit XimpleWare, Inc. v. Versata Software, Inc. Before the case started, Versata was involved in a legal dispute with a company. During that lawsuit, it was found that Versata had incorporated another company's, Ximpleware's open source software into their product. The first case was public, so Ximpleware eventually found out that Versata was using their code. Ximpleware then sued Versata for copyright infringement for incorporating their open source software without obeying the terms of the license.

So to answer your question, if you incorporate GNU GPL code into your product, and you do not obey the terms of the license, you're running a risky business. It's possible that no one will find out (in the case above Ximpleware did not find out for years), but if they do, you may be liable for copyright infringement. Under an extreme case, a judge could order you to open source all of your proprietary code according to the terms of the GPL (it is unlikely that a court would do something so severe).

This issue is still playing out in the case above. Aaron Williamson wrote an excellent and more detailed overview of the case and the legal consequences.

I've come to the realization that Linux on desktop is just a hobby OS. You install it, you tweak it, you use it a couple hours and then you go back to Windows because you can't do any actual work on it most of the time.

Basically like TempleOS except even Windows is faster 90% of the times at the few tasks they both can do.

I seriously got tired of having to reinstall Windows every couple of months because it decays over time. And wasting time installing software, drivers and removing telemetry after each install is also fucking annoying, Linux just gives you everything immediately.

installed linux on laptop
>shutdown, restart, sleep doesn't work
>detects that headphones are plugged in but there's no sound coming out from them
>install chromium, it instantly closes on start up
>multi-monitor support is bad, plugging/unplugging monitor cable causes various unwanted behavior
stopped there, who knows what else would I have found

>installed linux on laptop

no mention of distro...just linux

>detects that headphones are plugged in but there's no sound coming out from them

I'll take "Drivers" for $200, Alex

>install chromium, it instantly closes on start up
You improperly compiled Chromium and then blamed the OS for your failures as a human being

>multi-monitor support is bad, plugging/unplugging monitor cable causes various unwanted behavior
stopped there, who knows what else would I have found

Works great on every machine I've tried. But then again, I'm capable of RTFM. Maybe you should get a tablet.

>end up taking emergency calls at night from boss because Linux skill level passed
>eligible for roughly 10% raise every annual review

I <3 linux

barely matters

sound output should work out of the box
>You improperly compiled Chromium
i used package manager, works on virtual machine

same here
>bought a laptop, no os
>try to go ubuntu just because why the fuck not
>can't sleep or hibernate, always shuts down
>wifi doesn't work (never got it properly working, after multiple reinstalls it worked 50% of the time)
>headphones don't work
>frequent stuttering/freezing
>bluetooth not working
- note I tried looking for drivers, writing on forums and bunch of other shit but nobody could actually help me since there literally weren't drivers for my laptop so I had to switch
installed windows 7 and half the things got fixed immediately, other half took 15 minutes to install from like 1 google search

fuck linux, it's only good if you're on a thinkpad or a sysadmin

I realized it as soon as I studied CS in university. Lincux is a freetard meme. Same with Vim and emacs. The retardation in those text editors are unreal.

yeah, the problem is in you then, not the OS

Yes it does, you retard. If you install something like Debian stable on a laptop, you're gonna get old as fuck software that while it works great on servers, may not work on your new laptop hardware. If you're going to install Linux on new hardware, you have to use cutting-edge distros that are actually coded to take advantage of what you have.
