for some time (on firmware 1.76) no working sound drivers existed for the ps4 with some really fucked up graphical issues (disconnecting or losing HDMI signal breaks output until you hard reset). While it works very well for how hacked up and broken it is, even so far as running games, it does a damn fine job at not shitting itself (used a fedora image. It ran quicker)

The slim and pro ship with firmware <4.05 so both are exploitable brand new for a while. Despite the broken GPU support on the pro, essentially all the hard work is done so who knows how long it'll be before it becomes a budget fully fledged Linux machine

And at the risk of sounding like a faggot, the speaker knew his shit, had to go fast and was pressured so goddamn hard that for him to have done all of that presentation is a literal miracle - let alone the fact he's a devout Gentoo user.

They have to deal with wikileaks tier security stuff on a daily basis just to get information on people, know how to do crafty infosec stuff to pull information from web services, as well as other shit.

the x86 stuff isn't actually that hard to understand. the gist is that multiple cores in a cpu share part of the cache and abusing that, two malicious processes running on those cores can communicate by encoding 0 and 1 as "the other process accessed/didn't access the cache". that bypasses any sandboxing and basically nothing can be done against it on current hardware.

The political talks in the past were at least related to technology, mostly privacy and surveillance stuff, but they keep broadening their scope. Last year everyone got on the refugee-welcome bandwagon and this year is dominated by talks on right-wing politics and populism.

The organizers follow an ideology and they push it harder every year. Just look at the schedule for Hall 1 tonight. None of this crap is related to technology at all, it just doesn't belong on a hacker's conference.

Firefox's security functionality is rather limited right now. Mozilla wanted to keep compatibility with extensions but these extensions are largely not compatible with e10s which is one of the prerequisites for browser sandboxing. Mozilla has decided security is preferable to compatibility so they're just pushing forward and they're now working on securing firefox but there's still work to be done.
