Why are they so fucking expensive? I know their purpose is for enterprise/business backups....but man I'd love to have a tape drive for myself. 20 years of using computers I've built up a lot of saved shit, and lost even more because of hard drive crashes.

But they're not?
You can get an LTO4 drive for under $500 USD

HDDs are even less. The only good thing about tapes is backup software which doesnt expect them to be online all the time, and autoloaders. And to work around the former you just use a virtual tape library.
Also why would you ever recommend those shitty LTO4 drives? They're only 800GB, arent autoloaders and use parallel SCSI. Here is a LTO5 autoloader for even less which uses SAS

fuck me, that doesnt include the drive. anyways here is one with even more slots and does. if you skip the buy it nows you can get lto5 autoloaders for less

>Why are they so fucking expensive?
- Low-volume production
- Enterprise usage only, no shared components with any consumer hardware

If you're a large enterprise user that has terabytes of stuff to back up (several versions of it at different times and at different physical places) the amount of data you're writing means that the lower cost per terabyte of tapes vs HDDs or other methods wins out over the higher fixed cost of the tape drives, tape libraries, and such.
And anyway to a lot of enterprise users ten grand is a minor "cost of doing business" expense. A giant IT department looks at that kind of money like you'd look at buying an adapter cable for ten bucks.
>>58180910
I just want a cheap solution to store multiple copies of terabytes of data that I will need in 10 years but don't need now
>>58182806
i just want one because it's reliable and cool and because i can/want to
>>58182806
Amazon Glacier would be quite cheap for what you get. Storing 3 TB for 10 years would cost $1440.

>Storing 3 TB for 10 years would cost $1440.
Yep, much cheaper than a $400 drive and a $19 3TB tape
>>58184427
Then buy the tape drive?
>>58184427
Depends on your location. A second hand LTO2 drive is $700. The cheapest LTO6 drive goes for $3700. The best part with the Amazon Glacier solution is that if there is data you know you don't want to keep you can reduce your costs immediately.

My Dad used to be one of three main support guys for a huge pharmacy that got bought out by Walgreens. He has at least fifty of these drives laying around collecting dust, and hundreds of tapes. He's got a couple badass printers, too. When I was growing up, I used to go through all the old towers he brought home that were fucked up and pick the working parts out of them to build working computers. Shit was fun.
>>58184727
that's awesome. not quite the same, but a guy that my mom dated for a while worked at a pc repair place that also sold all sorts of computer stuff. my first computer was one he put together for me, and after that would always bring me all sorts of parts for me to try out and rebuild after i made the magic blue smoke come out one time. i should email/text him and see how he's been doing.
