Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

what's /g/'s verdict on the thinkpad 13 i5/8GB RAM? looks fine to me, should i get it?
>>
So I am pretty new to ThinkPads and bought an x220 with an SSD but it only has 4 gigs of ram. Definitely going to upgrade that, but I have seen people say they have put up to 16gb into an x220.

Is this a useful meme or is it overkill for the machine?

Why is Canada such a third world country when it comes to buying.

They are so expensive and our money is not even worth the plastic it is printed on.

Dear /tpg/,
I have a budget of (max) 450 dollars, an ssd, a 4gb and multiple 2gb sodimm sticks, don't give a shit if something is new or pretty, and need a laptop. The possibility of an eGPU mod would be an added plus.

I need at the bare min:
4 threads @ 2.6 GHz
720p, 16:9

Any particular models? Ebay links?

Thanks in advanced.

All right /g/ I'm almost falling for the meme. I have a choice of either the X201 with Core i5 540 M or a T410s with Core i5 540 M and Nvidia 3100 NVS GPU. Which one is better for my needs of basic office work and casual gaming (Dota2)?

Any fellow /tpg/ europoors?

Looking for AUO B156HW01 V.4 for when I finally buy that beautiful T520 and given I'm stuck in Belgium, it seems I will have to resort to ebay resellers from UK such as

Anyone with any experience with those or buying screen replacements in EU? I've also seen a few on AliExpress with "no dead pixels" warranty but.. yeah..

Sprung for a T440p since its the last one with a socketed board apparently, swapped in a 4910m, 1866 ram, and a 1080p ips in addition to the drives. Amazing cooling, for what i assumed would be a nuclear holocaust of a chip in this chassis, keeps it nice and quiet too, hell half the time its fully passive. Only feasable upgrades I can do now are swap in some 2133 ram for extremely negligible gains on the iGPU, and swap the atrocious touchpad for the T450's much better one. Real solid, I think I'm in love.

Shouldn't be too bad if you can solder, since it should just be a through-hole mount. You can probably find a replacement on digi-key or mouser or your other favorite electronics supplier.

Depends on what you're doing with it. 8GB will be enough for you to fuck about with a bit of overhead while running a Windows VM with [whatever] running.

8GB is arguably overkill for whatever you're doing with a C2D but not by a lot. I've been RAM bottlenecked at 6GB on my T601F.

Just ordered a T460 with a 1080p display.

Picking up the Samsung EVO 500GB SSD and 8GBx2 RAM at the store in a few minutes, so my total cost for the laptop is $940.

Not really much of a contribution to the thread, but I'm pretty fucking excited. I used to have an IBM Thinkpad in high school and I loved it until it developed some hardware issues that made it marginally better than a paperweight. I would have liked to just refurbish a T420, but I can't bring myself to invest my time in a computer that might not make it through the years.

On a related note, do any of you know how I could transfer the licence of Windows 10 on the new Thinkpad to another device? I'm thinking of wiping my old Macbook and giving it to my mom if I can get Windows 10 on it.

Dear /tpg/,
What the fuck is this shit.
Thinkpads are all about 'muh modularity', and the x230 is in the buyer's guide, but the X230 has a cpu that is fucking soldered to the motherboard. Is this easy to bypass and recommended? I don't think so.
In this case, are there any other thinkpads I definitely shouldn't even consider buying?

Is it okay to plug in the battery while on AC? What about the opposite: taking out the battery after plugging in the power cord? >>
>>58196143
if it's already bad, the battery management won't bother charging the bad cells. Just go and get another off ebay for like 20-30 bucks. Also these laptops are smart enough to not trickle charge the batteries. Once they reach about 4.2 volts per cell, charging stops.

so /tpg/, just following up on my post about this shit last thread

got 60$ in amazon cards for christmas, no idea what to spend it on, amazon has very little in the way of accessories for 10 year old thinkpads, so im building a nas

bought an HP RP5700 for 50$
refurb, with a c2d E6400 2.13ghz, 2gb of ram and an 80gb hdd with vista

nothing fancy, but i chose it over a few optiplex models because it has two low profile pci slots, and two full size ones on a pci riser. Which with a bit of modifcation, could easily hold a full size GPU, with a bit of a length limit, on a pci riser, as there is a x16 slot

another issue then is the power supply, its only 240w and has only a 24 pin, cpu 6 pin, three sata and two molex
it is a "green" machine so under load it uses like 50w of power or something stupidly low like that, so i have a limit of about 70w i could reasonably throw at a gpu.

so i have no idea what to put in there, and i have no idea if the pci slot supports only 25w, or 75w

i can do either dual slot low profile, or dual slot full size with a riser, and i need it be an extremely low power card

it doesnt have to perform great, this is a low end c2d system that may have 2gb or 4gb of ram if i can find some in my box of ram

yes i know this has nothing to do with /tpg/, but you fags are more active than /pcbg/ and this actually may have to do with my thinkpads, as the nas is going in the thinkpad rape dungeon to be used as a hub to store all my shit, because the 750gb hdd in the snowpad broke, taking all my music with it

Looking to buy my first thinkpad for college papers and music production, I found one on ebay with these specs:

What's the highest I should bid on it? The current bid is at 90 dollars. Everything included, thanks.
>>
So I am looking for a new laptop since my old one (some cheap Lenovo Ideapad) somehow shorted its power supply and died...

In my country (I am in Europe) there is no market for used thinkpads, so I will have to buy new. I see that most people here have the T series, but they are really expensive compared to most other laptops.
I am able to get the new E470 for a really good price compared to any other laptop I have come across, so I am really considering it. It has the i7 7500u, 16 GB RAM and the 940MX for ~$1000, while comparable consumer laptops like the Yoga 710, which has the exact same specs, cost several hundred dollars more. An equivalent T series model is over twice the price.

Is there any reason not to get the E470, as compared to consumer laptops?
>>
>>58196578
Hokay, if you are just writing papers up on it, you can get like a $45 R500 or something. Great keyboard, and costs literally nothing. now what are you really doing that needs an i5?
>>
>>58196600
Edit: I didn't see the "Music Production" part, Still, if that doesn't pan out, and you don't need a quad core beast, even the older R500's are worth it. they have the DDR3 ram, so it's not useless like the R61's

>>58196597
I think the Yoga is more expensive because its a touchbased laptop. so you have the touchscreen tax on it.

Ideally, I don't recommend the E series for ThinkPads, they are essentially a consumer laptop w/ a ThinkPad style keyboard and look. The frame isn't made with a magnesium composite, just a plastic composite, but unlike the former stronger R series because they want to make it light/sleek. However the good thing is that you will have a warranty on it so there's that.

Are there not any Latitudes or Elitebooks available in your country?

>>58196402
I seldom ship to Europe because of batteries and random shipping fees. Then there's the person who bids on it and then asks "Can you not use the global shipping program"...
>>
>>58196721
Dell and HP are available, but they are also very expensive because you can only buy them with business warranties. A similar Latitude costs about $2000 and has a slower and older CPU.

I don't really care about the touch screen, not having one is actually a plus, since I assume it means more battery life.

Is the E series really that bad compared to consumer laptops? I fully expect it to last only 3 or 4 years.
>>
i'm a paranoid retard that got a seemingly mint T43 for less than 50$ and i'm suspicious as fuck, i dban'd the hard drive and reset the BIOS, what are the chances of some sort of super spooky malware tracking my gay furry dragon dildo searches or something?

Well, you could get by with even a celeron based R500. I have 4GB in mine, it's got bigger than a 124X768 display, dual core, (go with a Core 2 Duo model) and it has a DVD RW drive. Literally any thinkpad newer than a R500 will do. Even the i3 variants. If you plan on gaming with it I'd do the i5/i7

I Was thinking of that too, ill have to find what the mobo supports, i know it can handle a c2quad, which might be fun
But its really just a project for fun, and it has two 3.5" bays so i can run two disks in raid

I think Lenovo has a utility that does it for you so that should be a relatively low-risk way to update it.

Windows 7 right now. You may not even need the PSU for the 750ti depending on its power consumption, could just get a Dell D220P AC adapter like I'm using with my setup. Although I guess you might as well, since the PE4C doesn't come with an adapter anyway.

Laptop is always plugged in since the battery it came with is shit. EGPU should work fine with just the battery, although I don't know why you wouldn't just plug it in since it's tethered regardless.

Pls excuse my disgusting cables

Lads, I just bought a brand new X250, and there is no internal battery, my Model is the "20CLS6PW00" and I can't find chat shit about it using any of the tools provided in the sticky, or lenovos site, it's not even listed in the lenovo PSREF. Any help? I want to know what this laptop is SUPPOSED to ship with, to check I wasn't bamboozled.

Friend has an E series thinkpad (I think E540 or E550), and the hinges are totally fucked after a few years. The build quality simply isn't what you would expect from a thinkpad. It's simply a consumer laptop, similar to the ideapad series
>>
>>58199153
i used an e thinkpad before, was nice

but i agree with most of the sentiment that prevails on /g/

there is no reason to buy a lesser device when you will be using it for years, and also the magnesium rollcage is breddy guud

Use the discount link in the Pastebin
The base model is $654.48
Get this SSD
>https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IAGSD68/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_ep_dp_OiVyybY0CSQVR
And this RAM:
$824.46 total
I think that's a pretty good deal
I would argue that i7 is unecessary if you're going to have enough ram and ssd, which you do. better to save the money
>>
>>58199626
So if i use it mostly for stationary things and dont mind replacing it after 5 years the e470 is fine?

I need to know the good and the bad between the X220 vs the T420. I'm considering both of them for my next laptop. What I already know is
>screen sizes are different, naturally
>the T420 has worse screens but can be upgraded through either getting the 1600x900 screen or putting in screens from other laptops that work better
>the T420 is thicker than the X220 and has an (unneeded) RJ11 port
>the X220 has some weird warping problem on the screen bezel when in direct sunlight (not really a problem considering replacement bezels from other models can be put on and from some of the ebay ads I'm looking at I'll need to replace the bezels to begin with)
>the T420 can swap out the CPU, the X220 has the CPU soldered on
>X220 has a bit better battery, probably due to the smaller screen
I'm basically on the fence about both of them. All I will end up using them for is for school and office work and potentially using them outside (which gives the X220 an advantage in this decision) but I also want to hear from other people.
>>
>>58199913
only used an x220 but i currently use a t430

i would go with x220 because of battery life and coolness factor
>>
>>58199956
Funny thing is I am technically considering the T430 too, but it was more of a 3rd option. Granted your endorsement does say a bit about the X220.
>>
>>58199152
You just need a PE4C, make sure to get the EC version:
http://www.mfactors.com/pe4c-v3-0-ec060a-pm060a-hp060a/

Like I said, you could use your PSU, but if you want to save space you can get a Dell D220P power brick on ebay for like 15 bux.

When you have the PE4C set up, plug in the power, plug in the expresscard into your Thinkpad while it's off, and then boot up. Also, at least with my setup, I have to boot with any external display cables unplugged from the GPU or else it gets stuck. You can plug them in once your OS loads. Proceed with installing drivers, rebooting, and then check Device Manager (assuming you're on Windows) to see if the card is recognized. I ran into error code 43 here, the fix for me was installing older (372.70) nvidia drivers. Worked perfectly afterwards. You can plug the expresscard in/out while in sleep mode afterwards whenever you want.

If you run into any issues, highly recommend TechInferno. I'll be making a more detailed guide there for my setup once I build my case.

I spilled vodka on my T520 keyboard the other night and it really fucked things. When I try to turn it on I get some sequence of lights. I unplugged the cmos overnight and got into the bios and booted like normal up until the start screen where it shut off and returned to it's old behavior. Is it salvageable?

I'm done with this bullshit. I'm just going to order a T420 tomorrow, which is honestly what I should have done to begin with. All i did was set the terminal to 50% transparency, removed titlebar/scrollbar and changed the background. I use the "Terminator" terminal.

The rest is just using i3's built-in floaty windows function (mod + shift + space) and then moving them around with (mod + leftmouse + drag)

I'm using this Vim config https://github.com/amix/vimrc

I also added this to my .vimrc in order to make it transparent:

hi Normal guibg=NONE ctermbg=NONE
hi NonText ctermbg=none
>>
>>58201723
The resolution is not so bad. The screen itself is what really bothers me the most. You need to be looking at it from the perfect angle or else everything becomes blurry and kind of unreadable.
