does anyone make a decent manual/hand-wound watch under 2-300$ (with exhibition caseback)? with the exception of seagull 1963 which I already know about

>just get an automatic
I would like to have one hand wind watch, I really like looking at the movement without having a rotor in the way and also I just want one.

Get an Amphibia, replace the the movement to 2414A and get exhibition caseback.

Or a vintage Poljot 3133 with a display caseback.

>was mainspring breakage an issue?
Sorta was but it was mainly marketing to show off a new alloy. Nowadays not really. I think that in a standard Rolex service they replace the enitire mainspring + barrel + arbor assembly still, although this also has to do with wear on the arbor and time/convienience.

From a stowa owner:
- Stowa sourcing the base from China
- They are still using mechanic from Swiss
Good quality finish, however....
If you want an excellent finish, I recommend Nomos. Both of them are selling the same style, but Nomos' finish is excellent and also expensive.

Value of watch depends on the 2nd hand market demand. Not everyone like Bauhaus style. I can see that both Stowa and Nomos are sold without any issues in 2nd hand market, but not an investment.

If you have ever seen the Rodina brand from china, with the same style from Stowa, you will see that the base is exactly the same quality.
If you want a long discussion, you can search in reddit or watchuseek forum, where the owner of Stowa refused to deny or confirm the story.

That's pretty cool, but they cost a fortune these days.

I also forgot to mention that radioactive dust and gasses regularly move about the plant and if your stuff gets contaminated and sets off the body scanners they confiscate it and dispose of it with other rad waste.

So it has to be cheap as balls.

The caseback engraving on my OVM scratches my arm a little when I crank the bezel. But case finish is really good, very nicely polished sides, and crisp brush on top.

Bracelet is top notch, from wearing Turtles and trying out a Mako, I'm of the opinion that no watch in this price range, or anywhere near, has a better bracelet. Clasp can do with being another half mm thicker though, add some strength to it. Springbars tend to "click" when pressing on them.

Movement is solid, Elaboré grade 2824, mine is running well within spec at roughly +3 seconds a day.

Lume is bright, but doesn't last long.
Crystal is nicely domed, and very clear.

I've yet to find a better watch for £315 new that is better than the OVM. I know I'll get called out for being a shill, but fuck it.

I agree with the Vostok people though, that is probably the easiest way. Russian movements also look pretty interesting, as opposed to the Chinese ones which just copy eta.

imo it's unwise to go for a thousand dollar watch as your first.

you are new to watches and don't know what you like yet, and your tastes haven't really developed. even in your post you really didn't specify any type or genre, just "best watch under pricepoint."

what usually happens is you find a watch that you really like, and a few months after you'll realize that there are a ton of watches you never even knew existed which you like a lot better.

Someone owns a 50 dollar watch, and they appreciate what goes into a 500 dollar watch so they buy one. Then in your view because they ever wear the 500 dollar one they're all of a sudden guilty of doing it for attention according to you. All that appreciation of what goes into it goes out the window if you're actually going to dare to wear it, eh? You realize, part of what goes into fine watches often equates to comfort. Most 50 dollar watches feel like complete shit, and can even have problems pulling arm hairs out with cheap bracelets.

Because at that price you get Casios with shitty designs, and chink shit that will be scratched after a week and break after a month, and I don't feel like spending $50 each month on a new watch. Fashion is quite often retarded to the point of negating the purpose of the domain it's used in. Case in point, most fashion watches are inaccurate, fragile and illegible, quite pointless for something meant to keep track of time, be worn on a wrist instead of kept in a pocket, and to actually be used. So people in this thread like good looking yet functional watches I guess.

People put a little more money because they want something that is legible and accurate enough to be useable, lasts some 10 years at least, and that is made of quality enough materials that it ages properly. And that requires a tad more than $50.

There's also some undeniable quality to expensive watches, that most people don't know about because they've only seen it on 2D pictures which certainly don't do them any justice, or under a thousand spotlights in a store which kills their aesthetics. There is a huge amount of eye tricks played by more expensive watches, whether luxury watches or simply high-range Casios and Citizens, which certainly grab everyone's attention whether they like watches or not, just like diamond earrings would whether you like earrings or not.
Fashion watches appear flat and forgettable, obviously no one would notice those if it wasn't for their bright colors, retardedly huge sizes and unusual shapes. Expensive watches can look like four dimensional shit, with reflections playing on eye rivalry, and much perspective between the dial, hands, glass and bezel.

Maybe look at an actually good looking expensive watch with your own eyes under natural lighting, and you'll get what it's all about. I often wear a basic SKX007, and despite that, everyone notices it because its finishing is unlike anything they usually see.

You're trying to get all high and mighty about nothing. This is about what it means for an item to have "character."

Something gets character when it shows wear and damage for a reason, and it's more distinguishable from others of the same model. An item does not have "character" just because it fell out the back of the delivery van.

>An item does not have "character" just because it fell out the back of the delivery van.

Yet you couldn't tell the difference. Because it's just a watch.

It's not a motorbike whose steel tells under which climates it was used, the seat says how often you had a passenger, the sides how heavy the bags were, and all the additions you made to it reveal everything about your trips. It's not a knife whose edge shows what kind of uses it has seen, the brown stains how much game was gutted with it, the swollen wooden handle how long you've been crawling out at night under a heavy rain. It's not a leather bag. It's not a camera.

A watch doesn't get "character", it just gets scratched as it ages, and everyone knows it's because you knocked it into a door. Its purpose is to be worn on a wrist, and nothing else. It's built to be as durable as possible because it is a precision instrument, not so much of a tool, and things that would give it actual character would likely destroy it. There is also no physical interaction with it aside from the crown and strap buckle.

I couldn't tell you the history behind every scratch on my motorbike, every bump on the edge of my knives, every wrinkle on my leather bag, every scratch, oh yeah scratch, on my camera, which contrary to a watch gets actual interaction. And that is how important those handful scratches on your watch are, and even if there's a story to it, it's just a scratch. A leather band alone would get much more character than the watch it carries.

F-91W is definitely cheaper ($13) and has cleaner look, but :

Which model ?
I like G-5600E-1 because it's solar powered but it looks pretty similar to W-800H-1AV.
I think the additional g-shock and solar power features don't really justify $70 price range for digital watch.
For analog watch, I don't really mind.

So yeah, if there's no better digital wristwatch I think I'll buy W-800H-1AV.

It's not too bad, what's really bad is the marketing and inflated price. That aside, they're great watches from what I read. I really like some of their designs and color palettes too.

Literally AliExpress tier garbage quartz dogshit advertised as assembled by subhuman melanin enhanced Detroit wildlife.

Possibly the single most overpriced watch brand in existence.

You should be deeply ashamed of ever having said anything remotely positive about them.
>>
>>58192203
That looks exactly like what it is.

Any difference between that and an F-91W other than a better light? I'd imagine a W-86's battery wouldn't last as long, but then again no one will really ever keep and use their F-91W for the full duration of it's battery life.

>>
>>58192206
Maybe you just dismissed it as a fashion brand and never looked deeper. Maybe you missed how it changed hands twice already.

They're now simply equivalents to Casio, Timex and Citizen, simply way too expensive. In a $100-120 range, they'd be great, but they're at least twice that. Now they're still made by niggers, and that's a major issue indeed.

Saying that they are equivalent to Timex (which are literally chink quartz tier) for $500+ is a complete and total admission that I was right.

Literally the single most overpriced watch brand on earth, existing only to turbocuck SJW faggots that fall for their marketing.

You deserve nothing but scorn and contempt for having ever had a positive thoughts about them, much less for trying to defend them.
>>
>>58192365

That Oris is just a poorly executed half hearted imitation of this type of design used by haute horlogerie brands.

You're missing the point: I said right from the start they're overpriced:

>>58192160

Timex watches are solid quartz, a clear cut above aliexpress chink quartz. So yeah, Shinola isn't chink shit, just way overpriced but actually good quartz watches.

i was confused reading these at first, i never looked into any of that garbage company's watch's details due to the fact that they got in trouble for saying "made in america" when they weren't

I assumed the prices they were charging were for mechanical movements (which were excessive, even for a mechanical). now i actually looked and see:
>We do not currently manufacture automatic watches. In the event that we add automatic movements to our lineup, we'll notify you.

wow, asking for over 500$ for the cheapest no complication 3hand quartz watch. this company is even shittier than I thought before. like pure garbage ripoff tier.

i literally can't believe they are doing this with quartz movements, my mind didn't even consider the possibility that they were non-mechanical at that price point
>>

The entire seiko 5 line is around 100 eurobucks, the best selling models are the snzg15 and the snk805. The best way to browse through them is just to find one on amazon and go ham on the "other items you may be interested in" section.
