Thoughts on cheap/no name keyboards?

I wanna buy a tenkeyless/60% but don't want to spend $100+ on one. My research has shown they either go cheap or expensive, there's no in between. (Mainly looking on Amazon)
>>
>>58173965
Some of the cheap ones that incorporate Gateron switches are probably nicer to type on than the expensive ones with Cherry MX.
These can't be too bad, I assume.

You probably aren't going to be satisfied by buying cheap. This goes for most things in life.

That said, you can get TKL Corsair or Gateron keyboards for less than $100 on Amazon with plenty of wiggle room.

I have Ajazz ak33 which I bought from aliexpress for $30 or 35, don't, really remember. It was on sale anyway. Black zorro switche which are some chink clones.
Strange layout which is neither 60% nor your typical tenkeyless. I like it personally since it has both arrow keys and very small layout. Actually I think it's the same layout as choc mini.
>>

>>58175928
How's the build quality though? Everything breaks in due time but I don't wanna buy something that will in 3 weeks.

Are knockoffs really that bad when I've never used a mechanical keyboard in memory? I just want a compact keyboard that doesn't feel like shit for GAYMINGzZZ

>>
>>58175985
Ajazz ak33 here. It's very nice. I had it for a few weeks now and I'm really happy with it. Very nice build quality at this price point. It's also my first mech ever. I don't know how long it will last though, probably not as long as non chink keyboards, since chinks have shitty QA.
Stock keycaps are pretty nice, no gaymer fonts and shit. Just normal keycaps, I have no plans of changing them personally.
One thing that sucks (besides strange keyboard layout) is that keyboard has no memory. For instance you can turn backlight off (or lower it) but after you stop powering keyboard and turn it back on it will go back to default setting - which is backlight on with brightest setting. Personally I just got used to backlight and have it on all time, doesn't hurt my eyes and it's just normal white light.

What switch would make for a natural evolution from the Thinkpad (X61/T400) keys?
(Perhaps a silly question, but I'm moving from a Thinkpad to a desktop machine soon and I'm going to assume that a mechanical keyboard is the next step up in enjoyable keyboard...ness.)

Hey guys, little update on my project

Desoldered all the switches from the PCB, and removed them from the plate, rekt the board in the process but I don't need it anymore anyway
Now I need to cut the plate to fit my 60% case and place the switches back on, and then wire them up to a teensy

What's a decent 60% with reds? Main features I want is just a as compact as possible case and good build quality. PBT keycaps would be nice, but I'm OK with buying ABS and then getting a PBT set.

Yes. The fc980m is based of the old chery g80-1800 design. You can find those keyboards for around 60 bucks. Some models like the dolch pac ones can cost upto $200 due to their rareity

Rs96 and Duck Lightsaver are your only two options. They are both barely in your budget, but they arent in stock right now. You just missed thr rs96 which ended its run last month. Is there anything wrong with this? Mostly for gaming. Mainly buying a new keyboard because while my membrane one now isn't bad, I have run into a few situations in Battlefield 1 where I'm hitting a certain key combination that locks it up. There are so many cheap mechanical keyboards now that I'm sure are pieces of shit compared to $100 or more ones, but it's at least got to be better than membrane, right?

http://a.co/hueuEQR

It has knockoff brown switches, a YouTube review says they actually feel like cheap Cherry MX Red. I've been eyeing that Tomoko one for a bit, but this one is $10 cheaper for a full size.

Open to suggestions but please try to suggest something $40 or under for a full size one. I was debating ditching a number pad to save desk space, but I still think I use it too much. $50 maybe if it's really that much better. Backlight is a plus but not a requirement, this one just happens to have them.
>>
>>58177793

Hmm looking more into the ErgoDox keyboards

I'm not sure if I like the Gateron switches. It seems like the gateron blues are both louder than the cherry blues *and* more importantly, require a higher actuation force.

I have a keyboard with the MX Clears (55g) and I already basically can't type on it compared to my MX Blues (50g). It feels like I'm typing on old rubber domes for how hard they are to depress. And these Gateron Blues are supposed to be even higher (60g)?!

The only other tactile switch they offer are the Gateron Browns (55g); which would be the same as the Cherry MX Clears if these numbers are correct - and I definitely don't enjoy typing on those at all.

So ugh, what do I do? Do I try and buy an older ErgoDox that still had MX Blues, or what?
>>
>>58178645
Where did you get those numbers?
https://deskthority.net/wiki/Gateron_KS-3_series
I personally really like my browns, but you should test it yourself. You can get different switches if you get parts on falbatech or that one american website.
>>
>>58178645
Actuation force only tells you so much about how heavy the switch is. Clears are only 55g after the tactile bump. At bottom out it's more like 90g. Just use this to look up force graphs:

https://input.club/the-comparative-guide-to-mechanical-switches/
>>
>>58178854
Thanks, that's exactly the sort of website I was looking for - something that actually fucking measures these things as a graph.

Based on this, the Gateron Blues seem just as easy (even easier) to press as the MX Blues.

>>58178781

Any rubber dome aficionados here?

We're a small group of individuals boldly going against the grain in striving for tactile perfection. We prefer the gentle, organic feedback of a rubber dome over the robotic, cold click of soulless mechanical keyboards. The feeling is gentle and intoxicating - like typing on clouds. And best of all? In comparison to mechanical switches, rubber domes are almost inaudible.

Keyboard manufacturers prefer selling mechanical keyboards because they're much more expensive. They line their pockets with the money of clueless consumers who are unaware or simply do not care for an alternative.

I hope there are like-minded individuals here. Perhaps we could have daily rubber dome keyboard threads where we can share photos and anecdotes about our devices. I used my keyboard to type today, how about you? It's important that we stick together, us, users of these particular type of input devices. We have much in common.

Different use cases. One with switches and a form factor that's nice for gaming, something with a numpad (or just a discrete numpad) for doing CAD. Also keep one of them at work.
And just for the purpose of being able to switch keyboards to your liking depending on what you feel like using, simply because you can.

I have isolated this two that I like, but can't decide which one would be better:

Gateron switch [73.68€]

Ajazz ak33 Zorro switch [56.58€]

Yeah I have this one, I like it and the blue led is nice at night, the keys are pretty light and I have been hitting keys near the ones I want because of how little force it takes to press down the key.
One other complaint is that the number 2 key has a @ on it but its actually " but I am thinking this is a driver problem and that I need to uninstall drivers from my old keyboards and reinstall the new one
>>
Are using blue cherry switches similar to owning a normal $40 logitech keyboard? or would that keyboard be more similar to a black switch
>>
what's with the Fkeyless keyboards.

Tenkeyless I can understand, it's a natural extrapolation from laptop keyboards, but what's with the drive to go smaller than that?

not much of a point but there are few keyboards that have an f-row without the arrow key and the useless crap above row so it's usually one or the other
having f-keys on the fn layer isn't a big deal

Rubber dome boards were never anything more than a cheapshit replacement for real mechanical keyboards.

As the years went on companies didn't want to pay out hundreds (when you account for inflation) for a single board. A model F was the equivalent of $900 back when they were new. IBM beamsprings were considerably more expensive than that.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about: that's subjective. Speak for yourself.

You started the hype, now everyone is trying to sell me bells and whistles I don't really need, and almost nobody is making middle-range boards. I don't like that.

CM quickfire is a solid 'mid-range' board. $80 for something of comparable quality to a $150 filco. You're welcome.
>>
>>58183387
>This is assuming you have the keyboard centered while typing.
I don't, I have it aligned so that my left hand naturally ends up on WSAD without requiring rotation of the wrist or an unnatural arm angle. I have both of my arms on their respective arm rest, parallel to my body

> muh build quality
I've had a $20 BTC scissor keyboard for 8 years without a single problem, it's been rock solid until I've spilled the coffee. Now I'm on a chinese A4Tech KV-300H with scissors, you can shit on it all you want, but it looks okay and it doesn't go anywhere because it completely satisfies my needs, unlike 99% of rubberdomes (especially long stroke ones which are unbearable). Unfortunately there's very few models like this.

Are you ESL m8? This sentence was painful to decrypt. Anyway, the cm quickfire is not a rubber dome board. Them being made (by costar) at the same factor as filcos probably has a lot to do with them being high quality boards.

Cheapest mech keyboard that looks simple?

Something like the lolita or similar.

I dislike quickfires and their star trek font as well as gaymare accents.

You have no one to blame but yourself. Not even mid range rubber domes use pad printing. Luckily you can get double shot keycaps for like 30 bucks

The lolita has a tame font compared to the other cheap keyboards out there. The only other option I know off would be the tomoko for $35

They are super cheap keycaps and will work perfectly fine. I wouldn't expect them to last that long since they are made from ABS

Unless you're playing Starcraft, you're probably better off with a rubber dome. You're not really getting any advantage using a mech and the noise is fucking annoying.

They will definitely last longer. Is your keyboard backlit? I'm asking because you can get the non led compatible version of those keycaps as well

Hey, thanks for the info. Looking at them now they're about $90. I figure I'd go with brown switches due to them being considered the middle ground (so I'm told), and I don't really care about the clicking. I do a mix of typing and video games.

If you want silver cherry mx switches there are other options that are much better.
For example everything made by ducky.

Are the Romer G switches found in Logitech keyboards linear or tactile?

I suppose linear but I cant find a confirming source on google for it.

And any general consensus on Logitech mechanical keyboards in general? Looking at the G810 at the moment.

Linear, with a rubbery feeling at the bottom of the keystroke. I wouldn't recommend them.

Logitech keyboards are shit. Dead LEDs, non-standard bottom rows and even non-standard stabilizer placement is what awaits you should you actually waste your money on one.

here's another one

Ah yes, I forgot that these cherry switches are tiny SMD components and not fat ass THT contacts.
And yes, I'm very worried about frying them with static, that's why they're considered to be so extra durable. Because they're really tiny and sensitive to static.

You should be able to tell from the label in which direction the fan blows, which would tell you that a carbon filter in that arrangement makes no sense.

Anything else I can help you with?

who said you had to touch it while soldering? you need a static mat at all times, static electricity doesn't show up just because you're doing solder work.

I suppose I'll just go with a standard cherry mx board instead.

Is there any specific brand that does not have wobbly keys like the corsair models?
I only ever tried clicking on a mechanical keyboard once and the wobbly keys of that display model did make me feel a bit off on the idea (corsair k70 I think, no idea what switch but it was to loud to be a rubberdome)

i had a logitech G910 for a while. i loved it because of the media keys but the shape of the keycaps was less than optimal and the key response was disappointing. i kept using it for over a year because of the media keys and the volume knob (i listen to a lot of music) but yes. i have recently moved to a legitimate cherry MX board and i love it.

your right. like i said i recently moved away from that platform. with my new keyboard the only thing i dont have that i did in my logitech G910 are familiarity and a kool little wheel for the volume. i hate relearning keyboards.

you buy a new keyboard and your like "this is awesome i love the look and feel" but then you realize that you dont type as well as you did and all of the sudden your new keyboard that you spent $X for seems inadequate.
