Don't use 10/100 ethernet cables and you'll be fine. AC1700 series or higher from either Cisco or Netgear is fine. Wired/wireless, number of devices, distance from router if using wireless, are all things that might be important in narrowing down what specific router you'd want.

Installing ddwrt or openwrt is a must. supplied firmwares are botnet. buy a compatible router. if you get one with plenty of flash and use openwrt, you can install useful packages with opkg - like PRIVOXY.

Does it have hardware NAT support yet? Back when I got my AC68U you would lose out on hardware NAT acceleration with DDWRT, which would also take with it a large chunk of the router's WAN-LAN NAT performance. Still, could probably be enough for 150Mbps even with software routing, IIRC it could do 200-300Mbps (and 950+ with hardware on stock FW or modified versions like Merlin's).

Ubiquiti Unifi AP-AC Pro for wireless. Build your own pfsense box or if you have a home server / virtual machine host virtualize pfsense with its own network interface.

It's the only way to get 1GBps throughput on VPN and internet.

I assume you mean 1Gbps, because for 1GBps you would need 10Gbps Ethernet and that is exceedingly uncommon for home use and home ISPs. That being said, there are by now quite a few consumer "routers" which can handle 1Gbps routing just fine. VPN doesn't need to run on your pfsense box, there's nothing special about it. You can run OpenVPN or w/e on your home server even if it just sits behind your gateway like any other device, those tasks aren't really related at all.
