So I'm building a PC for work, and I'm wondering whether to get the 3GB or 6GB gtx1060?

It will run 2x 1080p screens and 1x1600p screen.

It will be just work stuff (programming, etc), however I'd love to get in a bit of gaming on the 1440p every now and again. Obviously I'm not going to be playing bf1 at max graphics settings or anything, probably some older games or some games like buttcraft at low settings.

So within the context of that, I'm wondering what difference double the VRAM will do?

Please consider to upgrade to 1070 or even 1080.
3 monitors, with one > HD resolution are a heavy load.
Ideally, you need a Quadro class for multi monitor, but since you are not into a rendering work or CAD, it is not a good choice for you.

Seems like bait but I'm going against my better judgement. The 3gb is also lacking some cores, it's a cut version of the gp104 chip where as the 6gb is the full blown one. I'd get the 4gb 480 in your situation if money is tight because they're like 180 but if you have some more to spend the 1060 6gb at 250 is nice, I own one.

Oh don't get the evga gaming model look how pathetic it's cooler is

The cores don't matter, they only do around 5 % performance. The VRAM is a bigger problem, but I think the 6 GB card is too expensive.

I've played 4K for 2 months on a 1060 3GB, it is possible but not satisfying. Lower resolutions worked but were in the VRAM limit every time. It can be a good budget solution, otherwise go with a 1070, especially if you plan to go above 1080p.

The 1070 almost doubled my FPS while having settings set to high instead of lowest, and I think Witcher 3 didn't have a VRAM limit. Games like BF1 had it, and I always had micro shuttering despite using Gsync.

I assumed that for 1080p the 3gb would not be an issue and that people were so strongly opposed to the card because of the reduced cores. I would much rather have bought a rx 480 at this point as I put an AIO on my 1060 and I'm not able to oc more than 10% because of the power limits, where as a rx 480 at 1500 is like objectively better than the 1060. The 1070 is also an amazing card, if he can afford of course it's the best choice because it's the only $400 card on the market.

Its a cheap budget version of the GP106, but still much stronger than a 1050 Ti. 3GB are still OK but not future proof, like Nvidias old 600 series cards are now a case for the trash, while 7900 series are still usable. But both lack of performance, and the 1060 6GB will do too in a few years.

Why do you buy a AIO for a 1060? These cards arent meant for OC, maybe the FTW models or the HOF (I heard the HOF 1060 currently holds the world record for the fastest GPU clock ever reached - 3 GHz). Same for the 470/80, but if you can get a 470 4GB for the same price prefer it.

The 6/8 GB models cost around 300 € and more here, so a 1070 is the better choice in this budget section. The cheapest KFA21070 costs 400 new.

Don't bother, just get a 1070.

I had an old corsair AIO in my closet but I use a hyper 212 on my 6600k so I just jimmied it onto the 1060 because it sounded like a literal jet, i had never heard such a loud computer in my life. Witth just the aio half ass stuck on the chip I'm at the max OC with out modifications to increase power, 2150 mhz and 50c after 1 hour stress.

Its not worthy for a 1060, if you had increased the power limit it had burnt your VRMs. VRMs without active cooling always explode... Sell the AIO and get a 1070. I think a good Corsair AIO is worth at least 50-100 €.

It's 5 years old or I would, trust me. The vrms have some what okay cooling with the stock gpu fan pulling away from them and a case fan blowing at them and over all solid air flow in the case. I'll be buying those tiny copper things you stick on and putting some liquid metal on the resistors to drop their resistance and increase power. In march I'll have money for new parts
