Despite owning a beamspring, I'm finding it nearly impossible to give up my Model F 107 as my main keyboard. Put some grey keycaps on it recently which I think go rather well, attached a custom made braided and coiled micro usb cable, and have had the case powder coated black.

Merry Christmas to all

I'd be all over the Model F if the guy did a version with a SSK layout.

By the sounds of it all of the tooling will be destroyed at the end of the production run?

Well on Deskthority there was a guy creating SSK internals that had Model F flippers, springs, and pcb inside. I happen to own one - pic related
Unfortunately the production run for that has ended, however the guy behind that project said he'd talk to the Model F 4704 reproduction creator and ask if he could keep the factory open after the second production run but I'm not sure if anything came of that.

Anyway it might be worth you creating your own FSSK, here's a thread on how it can be achieved.

https://deskthority.net/workshop-f7/howto-chop-a-model-m-barrelframe-steel-plate-to-fit-in-a-f-ssk-case-t13324.html

The FSSK created in the thread is the same one I own now btw.

why won't someone make a model F with a more modern layout?
>>
>>58158295
Ikr, it's a shame Unicomp didn't take on capacitive buckling spring as well, although they're not even capable of making a TKL Model M so I doubt they'd be capable of that.

Are you the guy from DT that did the unicomp mod?

Ah fair enough, and yeh it's a shame unicomp are so useless but I believe they lost the molds for the original SSK's so they have to completely start from scratch.
Honestly if they sold a chopped unicomp that looked as good as the one from deskthority I'd definitely buy it. You can't even see where that one has been chopped.

Corsair boards are kind of shitty in general. Cooler Master makes a couple good ones. Ducky is a far more reliable brand and should be easy to find.

Also, it looks like Filco and Leopold are putting silent reds on some of their boards now.

Hey /g/ I got pic related for christmas from my mom. I'm getting crawlinginmyskin flashbacks from the aesthetic, but it's still a mechanical keyboard, and I've only ever been using $10 rubberdome keyboards in my life.
I've read the pastebins in the OP, and one of them said /g/ likes to shit on razer keyboards because they switched to khali switches from cherry mxs, but the packaging on this one said it uses "razer orange" switches.
Is this just a marketing gimmick or has razer designed an actual mechanical switch? Can anyone tell me if this keyboard is any good? Typing feels satisfying as fuck desu, but I'd probably feel this with any keyboard that costs more than a burger with sides.
>>
>>58159145
Razer just uses rebranded kailh switches. The build quality is okay, but its overpriced for what it is. Since its free though who cares
>>
>>58159209
>rebranded kailh switches
Yeah that's what I thought.
>overpriced
I don't even want to check how much it costs to be honest. I'm not sure I fully grasp the advantage of mechanical keyboards other than feeling pretty good, but I guess it's nice to have a legit keyboard for once.

Its not mine, but as someone who has a couple IBM keyboards there is a glossy coating on the side of the keycaps that reflects light, and it really shows even if there are small impurities that you can't feel
>>
>>58158341

Unicomp is an American company still stuck in the 90s. They're incredibly risk-averse and glacially slow to change anything or try anything new. Hell their website would be the easiest and least risky thing to modernize and they couldn't even manage that. They also completely lack any sort of engineering so they couldn't come up with anything new if they wanted to.

And modelfkeyboards is fixated on replicating dated designs instead of utility or modern layouts, let alone the price point. Nevermind their claims of using "better" materials to justify the cost has never been substantiated.

The only way we're ever getting decent and affordable capacitive buckling springs is if some chink companies decide to take it up.
>>
>>58160011
Those new model f boards are almost identical to the old ones. Only little nitpicky shit like using steel spacebar clips instead of plastic. That and you can get it with an aluminum case with a smaller bezel.
>>
Pok3r a decent keyboard?
>>
>>58160031

I'd settle for a decently sturdy plastic case. Metal cases are unnecessarily heavy, expensive and conduct more noise.

And I've got far more practical things to beat a man to death with than a metal keyboard chassis.
>>
>>58160072
It's all right. Not as programmable as it could be, but it's available in just about every Cherry switch still in production, and you can find it anywhere.
>>
>>58160083
The old boards had a lot of metal in them m8. The top case might've been plastic but the backplate & mounting plate for the switches were steel. If you go older, the entire case for a beamspring board was metal. It's what made those boards so sturdy.

Been considering an FC660C lately. I've only tried a Novatouch as far as Topre goes and wasn't overly impressed. It felt nice to type on but typing long passages just felt tiring and I wasn't the biggest fan of having to bottom out. Is the Leopold any different in regards to feeling?

I'm thinking of buying a small keyboard, like basically only the keycaps being visible small. I'm thinking of getting a Pok3r but even that has a visible case. Anyone know anything even smaller?
>>
How do the caps on massdrop get created? Does someone just come up with some random set, raise enough money and get them made?
>>
>>58162978
No. There's always an interest check first (usually on geekhack/deskthority). Then if there's enough interest, a GB organizer will contact massdrop about selling it through them. The price all depends on how much a certain kit sells. Of course the more a kit sells, the lower the price.

The stock keycaps on Ducky One keyboards are already high quality. Anything higher would end up costing $60+. You could downgrade if you want some pretty colors, but I wouldn't do that
>>
>>58163363
quick question about this, what switches would I need to buy for this? Is it possible to buy them with LEDs or not?
>>
>>58163426
pcb mounted switches and you add leds yourself, so buy some of them too. also resistors
>>
>>58163426
You can buy LED switches since the gh60 supports it. Any switch made by cherry or gateron should be fine
>>
>>58163405
I'll just stick with stock keycaps for now then.

Do you know much about mx red switches compared to mx silent red switches? Is there any significant loss in feel or something that you lose in opting for the more silent variant?

Gh60 comes pre soldered depending on who you buy it from

That keyboard is so sexy with its color scheme.
I wish they were lighter switches, however, because it might be tiring to type on them for an extended period of time.
>>
>>58163663

For me, bucking springs are the only switch I've tried that provide enough feedback that I can consistently avoid bottoming out my keystrokes, which in turn makes it much less tiring to type on than the Cherry MX keyboards I've tried previously (reds then browns then clears).
>>
>>58163746
Do you type faster when you do not bottom out?
>>
>>58163952

It's more of a comfort thing than a speed thing for me. I find that bottoming out keys eventually makes my fingers sore.
>>
>>58164051
In general, how long does it take for your fingers to turn sore when you bottom out?
When I'm using my HHKB my fingers will get tired but the cushioning of the rubber means my fingers don't get sore.
They might do that with MX Red. but I prefer Topre to it very much.

I bought a novatouch the other day anon, how long did you spend typing on them? and where did you try them? curious because it does make a difference
the leopold has a metal plate (iirc) so it sounds and feels a BIT different but not a huge difference (especially not in sound if you use o-rings on the novatouch)

Fair enough then. If your only experience was in store or the like it probably wouldn't have been very good representation of the switches, especially not for topre, anyway. Oh right, the Leopold comes with pretty nice PBT keycaps too which will make a difference in feel and sound, maybe picking the board up and grabbing varying sized o-rings to try out might be an option if you definitely want the Leopold.
Personally, I can't say I like browns much; prefer blues. Though, I imagine you're quite a heavy typist given the fact you don't particularly like the feeling of bottoming out Topre (again maybe o-rings?). Perhaps an alps (or alps-inspired, looking at you; matias) board is something to try see what you think of them.
Given their age though, I'd probably just recommend looking at matias boards, since alps switches feel different with heavy abuse and dirt and the like in them. (They're often considered a bit scratchy, though now I think of it, so are browns)

I'm starting to get serious discomfort from typing on a “straight” keyboard and interested in purchasing a split keyboard instead.

What kind of split keyboards are there, and which ones are worth getting? Price isn't really a factor, I'd be prepared to spend $400 if I have to.

Some considerations I have:

* It absolutely must be in ISO layout (not ANSI)
* I want MX Blue switches
* I need a numpad and a 6-function block / F row / arrow keys etc.
* What would be absolutely ideal is some amount of overlap between the left side and the right side, so I have the center column or two duplicated to both sides
* Solid metal backplate and strong build quality would be ideal but not a hard requirement

Ideally, I'd imagine my keyboard being basically just two filco majestouch cut in half, with a left half and a right half each covering slightly more than the center. Heck, if I could literally just do this without damaging the keyboard in the process, I would buy a second majestouch and do that.

Any ideas? I found this but it violates a few of my requirements. Is it possible to achieve all of my requirements without needing it to be custom-made for me?

probably a long shot, but i'll try asking
i'm dyslexic and it comes up full force when i type on a keyboard (it's manageable when handwriting), i mix up the keys, touch non-letter keys when not meaning to, and overall i'm horribly slow. to worsen the matter, i'm using a terrible laptop keyboard.
obviously some of these problems can't really be solved, but does anyone have any idea if a better keyboard could help me a bit? i was thinking stuff like different color keys for letters/non letters, and maybe even different textures for some keys. but obviously that would cost me a ton of money, and i'm not sure about the actual improvement. does anyone else have my same problem? or any experience with dyslexia and typing, really

if its plate mount you have to desolder all the switches you want to replace. Unless you have some custom plate then there is no other way to do it.

I have dyed Magpul plastic which is a robust plastic similar to textured PBT. Pic related is sand colored plastic boiled in chocolate brown RIT for 5 minutes, flipping each side once per minute.

The problem you face is preserving legends. White legends will be especially susceptible to dye. If you don't care about legends, then have at it. Start with 2-3 minutes in boiling RIT solution and add time from there until you find the right length of time to cook. Once you get the shade you want on a test cap you can start boiling for that specific length of time to duplicate that shade. Keep each batch to a single layer, and keep the pieces moving or you'll end up with the darkest sides being those touching the bottom of the pot.

And remember that you can only darken the plastic, you cannot change or remove color, so start with lightly colored keycaps, and have spares to practice on before doing the rest.

Does a board with this key layout exist with brown switches? Specifically, ctrl/win/fn/alt/space on the bottom row
The fn keys don't matter that much.

So I got a Razer Blackwidow Ultimate and a Corsair Vengeance K65 for Christmas, and I don't really know anything about mechanical keyboards. Anybody have opinions on which I should keep?
The Corsair has "Cherry MX Reds" while the Razer box only says that it was "All new Razer mechanical switches".
I'm also wondering why a keyboard would have audio jacks.
>>
>>58171474
Why don't you try them out and decide for yourself?
>>
>>58171491
Oh, I will when I get home. Just wondering if there's something I should know about either of them that I'd miss just because I've never used one before. The quality of the cherry reds vs Razer brand keys or reliability for example, I dunno.
>>
>>58171524
Razer just uses re-branded kailh switches. And here is the thing, there is nothing wrong with switches made by little kids in sweatshop, its just that Razer overcharges for them compared to other keyboards. But since you got it for free it doesn't really batter. Reds are a linear switch with no tactile feedback, while Razer uses greens which are rebranded kailh blues that are clicky, which are knock offs of cherry blues, and razer orange, which are rebranded kailh browns, which are knock off cherry browns that are just tactile.
>>
>>58171524
They'll both probably last until well after you are done with them. I'd be more worried about which switches and layout you prefer.
>>
>>58171406
I did. and then I posted the design and asked if it existed. I will make it if it doesn't.

is the corsair k70 or strafe a worthwhile upgrade from a razer blackwidow chroma? they're on sale right now.

also, should i get cherry mx blue or brown for both gaming and typing?
>>

never brown, just a middling switch that fails at everything
>>
>Budget
100-150 Euros
>Location (continent at least)
Italy

Soft/Tactile for loads of typing and gaming
>Layout
ISO, Italian keymap would be nice but optional
>Form factor
100% at least numpad and keys for volume, no need for macro keys
>Backlight
I don't mind either with or without
>Previous/current keyboards
shitty membrane logitech g110 that made me realize I only ever need macro buttons on the mouse

Overall, I'm pretty happy with my unicomp. Plastics aren't great, but it looks good to me and feels heavy duty. The tactile feedback takes you back to the old model M keyboards of yore, just with a windows key added for functionality. I like that when you hear the 'click', its registered even though you didn't bottom out.

Is a blue cherry good for gaming and typing? Or would brown cherry be good for overall use?

Also, what would be good for a brown cherry and $100-150 Canadian?
>>
>>58173336
Not him but brown is best for general use unless you really like the entire neighborhood hearing your keyboard
>>
>>58173336
Blue is an alright switch for anything. It's all matter of preference.
Except for browns. Browns are shit; get clears instead.
In your price range, you have multiple options, but I guess you could go with some Ducky One keyboard. There are few choices in that price range.
>>
>>58173377
>>58173389
I'm guessing a clear keyboard would make more noise if it has more actuation force? Also, is there a difference between Ducky 1 & 5? I'm thinking about getting one of them. What else is similar to Ducky in terms of quality and PBT to consider the options?

Is building one like the gh60 earlier mentioned cheaper/easy to make?
>>
Thoughts on cheap/no name keyboards?

I wanna buy a tenkeyless/60% but don't want to spend $100+ on one. My research has shown they either go cheap or expensive, there's no in between. (Mainly looking on Amazon)
>>
>>58163520
I got my little brother a TOMOKO keyboard for Christmas and he seems to be enjoying it, I can hear him click-clacking on it right now in the other room. He wanted something that lights up, I saw that it was mechanical, and the price was good with favorable reviews, so it seemed like a good buy.

I tried it out a little myself and really impressed with the physical build quality on it. The casing is made out of metal, it doesn't feel cheap.

I did a "multi-key press" test with it in Overwatch where I chose Tracer on the practice map and held CTRL to crouch and tried walking in all diagonal directions with the WASD movement configuration (WA, WD, AS, SD) while tapping Shift to use her blink ability on top of it and it all worked. That may not seem like a big deal to any of you, but on the 10+ year old membrane keyboard that I'm typing on right now I can't pass that test. The Shift key will not work if I'm holding W+A on this PS/2 membrane keyboard of mine.

The one downside I've heard of TOMOKO keyboard, from what I read though in the Amazon comments, is apparently they use proprietary mechanical keys, so they can't be swapped. I really don't know what the big deal of this is though, maybe just means that 10+ years down the line my little brother will be forced to buy a brand new keyboard if the keys get damaged in some way.
>>
>>58167349
You could just get an ergodox and never look back. Either a custom one or if you are a lazy fuck an ergodox ez, which is probably the case if you are on /g/.
>>
>>58163663
You would think that they're too hard, when you hear the 70(?) gram actuation force you fear that it'll be harsh and way too stiff.
But really, it's not that bad. I can type and play games with ease and without fatigue for extended periods. And the feedback is lovely.
>>
>>58172985
Do you know what type of plastic it's made out of?
They try to sell the light amount of plastic as a good thing.

Only Ducky One rgb i can find is the browns. I hear that all this hate on them is just a meme. and i would like a silent keyboard after all
>>
>>58173963
They are called silent because they lack the mid-downstroke click.
Bottoming out on them, the loudest part, is still present. You should try o-rings for silencing.
What bothers me is the grit but that's supposed ot be there I believe.
If you want a super quiet keyboard you should go scissor switch or the Matias Quiet Pro.
>>
>>58173975

Seconding the Matias. I got one and while I kind of hate the glossy case, my god alps-type switches are sex.

The tactility is actually strong unlike MX browns and it's quieter than my old piece of shit rubber dome board.

Of it, I like Gaterons over MX but would still like a Korean Custom with lubed MX Clears.
Gaterons are just smoother.
I'd like to try out Matias and Buckling spring before I get bored of mechanical keyboards too.
>>
>>58173857
The plastic is good enough, but mine gad some sprue bits and some panel gap. The ultra classic also has residual molding lines for the trackpoint model's mouse buttons. I'd recommend the regular classic model, it's probably a bit better than the ultra classic.

>>
>>58175509
Sorry if I hurt your feelings you turbo faggot
How did you even try to learn? Just memorizing the position to all the letters? Get on a specific programm that relies on repetition, touch typing is (like anything else really) a skill that needs a lot of practice, to the point of your brain associating a certain hand movement to writing a word
>>
>>58175563
ok i'll break it down for you
the lessons i tried following are all based on the fact that you should use the physical marks of the letters F and J in order to find your way through the keyboard, and consequentially know where the other keys are. problem is i mix up left and right, so i literally don't know which side every key is on, and no, i can't learn it by memory
>>
>>58175591
Ok, your index fingers should be resting on the homing bumps
The thing is you dont have to kniw where the other keys are, you have to practice a lot to the point that your movements are mechanical
For example, try and write fgfg with your index for a hundred times
Then write fagfag (a's with your pinkie) for another hundred, if you have trouble writing it without looking go back to writing fgfg
It just takes a little more effort on your part but it's not impossible
>>
>>58169393
would it be possible to get this, but with 103keys and black/white lettering instead of inverting the color of the key itself?

i like it.

>>
>>58176426
If its that one, the non standard staggering on z row (which imo is better), extra keys that you'll most likely never use (just rebind them in software), and the lack of usb hub on the JP model.
>>
How would you describe the following layout: keyboard with numpad but lacking function keys so the arrow keys sit snug within the numpad? Like a laptop layout I guess.

Could anyone recommend a keyboard with this layout?
$150 aud budget with cherry browns.
>>
>>58176426
It's a great keyboard if you're a emacs users. If you are, please remap the ctrl to the key closest to the space bar.
I don't know why people keep spreading the meme to remap capslock to ctrl. Capslock as ctrl still makes you strain your pinky. You should be using your thumb like on the space cadet keyboard to press ctrl.
>>
>>58173801
I'm extremely nervous about changing the keyboard layout. I have a lot of things in hardcore muscle memory due to typing all day for the past 10+ years. I don't want to mess up my 160-170 wpm either.

That's why I don't like these “custom” layout keyboards, and would prefer just a regular split ISO layout. But I guess I could give it a try..
