I have a Nexus 7 2013. My next tablet, if I get one, will probably be an iPad.

Android didn't just drop the ball with the tablet space. Google took the ball and flat out threw it away. There are no good tablets for Android, and even if there were, there is 0 pressure on app developers to make tablet optimized apps anymore. They're all just resized phone apps.

At this point, even if Google said, "Android 8 is all about tablets. Also, we're not making a Pixel 2 this year. Solely focusing on the Pixel Tablets. No new features for phones at all, we're going full Snow Leopard here.", I still wouldn't recommend them to users because it takes a few years for the app ecosystem to really start taking advantage of them. Google doesn't care, Samsung isn't doing anything except 'lolmorecoresandmemory', and every other manufacturer is selling cheap chinese junk.
