A web project usually involves 3 programming languages and 2 mark up languages (HTML and CSS). The 3 PLs are JavaScript, SQL and some server side language. If you use node.js you can use the same language at client side and server side. If you use an ORM or an object database like CouchDB then you don't need SQL. So you can write everything in the same language. This reduces the number of bugs caused be switching the context of work. Also node.js is pretty fast, at least faster then PHP 5.
