People are so lazy nowadays. After the internet was a thing, before Facebook was a thing, people used the internet for news. People have used newspapers for news since they were a thing. Some newspapers were/are reputable, some weren't. Some were somewhere in the middle. Wise people always made sure to spread out their news sources, in the event that sources they deemed credible got something wrong, which inevitably every news source will at some point.
But people now... they are too lazy to look up sources. They just go on Facebook and read whatever is there, then cry foul when they read something THEY BELIEVED and find out it was fake. They want to be spoonfed but then don't want to be held accountable for perpetuating the false information they're swallowing.
The people you considered smart are idiots just like the rest. It doesn't matter how smart you are if you don't bother to make sure the information you are getting is bunk (to the best of your possible knowledge).
