If you are going to use it as a main OS drive you will have to.

Guy trying to run Fedora 25 in a VM here. I've gained progress but am encountering another problem.

Running Fed 25 in VirtualBox I can get to the login for Live System User and attempt to install to the hard drive. I've allocated 45gb for the virtual disk. The initial install works fine. When I restart the VM to apply the installation, its gone. I get an error, see pic related.

Compression on lossy formats.

Thanks to how JPG works there will be noise all around the image and will get worse every time you compress it more.

Use a lossless format like PNG.

>cirnojpegthestrongest.jpg

I assumed it was caused by compression, but 90 percent of my images are jpegs, and less than one percent of them have those vertical lines. I guess I am looking for a more specific reason.

It happens when you upload a image to a site that compresses it by default, one that doesn't care about image quality and only to reduce image size as much its possible, even if it means do it multiple times.
Some examples are twitter, imgur, etc.

Others will keep the original image and dont change it such like pomf clones, 4chan, pixiv, etc.

That is why the images you have stored dont look bad.
>>
>>58143359
Is it SO-DIMM? otherwise it wont fit.

Its a JPG problem, other formats dont have this problem, like PNG because is a lossless format.

Images like the one you posted should be PNG originally, it would be around 2-4 KB.

they pick up artifacts like whores pick up std's

I want to remove the LED function cable from the back of my computer monitor. But it is concealed with difficult to peel-back tape. It is like foil. I tried peeling it back without breaking it but it came apart. Is it electrical tape?

I just installed win7 pro. I have a 1080p 144hz and a 2560x1080 ultrawide 60hz. When I put the 60hz as my main display I get no problems, but I would rather play games on the 144. However, if I switch the settings to make the 144 the main display, I get really poor performance on the 60 hz, and the wallpaper shows with black bars on the sides. Anyone know why this is happening? I have an R9 390 if that matters.

Tomorrow I'm going to clean my laptop. First time since 2008 and generally first time cleaning a laptop at all.
What should I know before I do it and probably fuck up my computer?
>>
>>58144616
Physically or Digitally?
I recommend both.

Digitally:
Reinstall your OS

Pysically:
Find a guide, preferrably one from the manufacturer, and one third party to cross reference.
Just don't force anything.
If you're having trouble with something, double check for screws, think about where the plastic/metal clips are, and if you still cant figure it out, take a coffee break.
When replacing thermal paste in a laptop, make sure you are using non-conductive thermal paste (or thermal pads if required).
Anti-static is not necessary (unless you are wearing mostly synthetic clothing), but do try to work on a non-static workbench. Wood is ok.

I'm ok on the software side of things, so no OS cleaning needed, but I still don't have much practice with the hardware. I've looked on youtube for disassembly and cleaning videos for my model of laptop. Got the theory behind applying a thermal paste, will probably end up with not too expensive but also not no-name thermal paste. Wood desk - check, coffee - check. Thanks for the tips.

The javascript/sql are from web developers and can be ignored.
Python, Java, C# and C++ are the most common languages used by actual developers.
>>
>>58144616
Watch a video of how disassemble your laptop first.

Remove the battery first and press the power button and then for a while (10-15 seconds).
Get canned air and a new paint brush.
If you are going to repaste it (reccomended) get isopropyl alcohol.
If you dont are going to repaste it dont even think of removing the heatsink.
You should remove the motherboard since dust gets under it too.
If you use canned air, remember to lock the heatsink fan in place with something or you will fuck the bearings with it.
Be careful with the HDD.

Dont strip screws, dont put pressure on them.
If you end with one extra screw time to open it again.

If you can find an analogue scope for a good price, they're fine. In fact, you'll learn a lot from using an older scope because you have to figure out a lot of stuff on your own.
Digital are more useful, but also more expensive. Some less expensive Rigol scopes can be unlocked to give access to the features of more expensive scopes (they run the same firmwawre, but just come locked down with unlock codes that are just hashes of the serial number)

Actually once you remove the screws in most laptops (except dell models where you need to remove the HSF usually) the motherboard will come off if you remove all screws with no problem.

If you repaste remember to clean the old paste from the heatsink and from the CPU with isopropyl alcohol.
Or paste cleaner but will be way more expensive.
Dont use anything else.

I'm in the process of going tinfoil. Can someone give me a privacy checkup?

Things I think I'm doing right:
- OSS only on home systems
- Home network sits behind ProXPN subscription paid for with Bitcoin
- Browse with Firefox configured to clear cache on close, not accept any cookies except whitelisted ones, block all ads, NoScript everywhere except on whitelisted sites, HTTPS Everywhere, referal headers turned off, Do Not Track on
- Only message through Signal
- Permanently deleted all social media except LinkedIn, GitHub and Twitter, which I only access through a native Linux client I wrote myself & my work computer (Mac)
- Turn off all location services on all devices
- Deleted Uber account, use Lyft instead
- DuckDuckGo for search
- All of my personal hardware is bought second hand so that the serial numbers / MAC addresses are not traceable to me
- No one has ever taken my fingerprints
- My cameras all stay covered when not in use

Things I need to change:
- 8+ years of message history on GMail. In the process of locally saving and remotely deleting all history
- 8+ years of calendar history on Google Calendar. In the process of deleting all history
- Even though I keep history permanently off, don't save any information to the service, and keep location services off whenever I'm not using it, I use Google Maps
- I use an Android through AT&T. Ouch.

Questions I have:
- I want to close my Google account but I'm not sure how to replace Gmail. What's the best secure encrypted hosted email provider that won't go out of business in 2 years?
- Same question for Google Calendar
- Same question for Google Maps. Please don't recommend OpenStreetMaps, it fucking sucks.
- My ISP is known for its privacy violations. I use a VPN but is that enough?
- My smartphone is the obvious weak link in my setup but I don't know how to replace it. I need a smartphone for work but they're unwilling to provide me one.

How am I doing? Suggestions?

If I were I certainly wouldn't admit it to a stranger on a public website. But this has nothing to do with that, or with spam? Its an ideological issue for me.

>>58145575
The answer to this question depends partly on what you're doing and how you're doing it. If you develop on the cloud (in an EC2 instance, for example), you can buy a shitbox and be fine. If you're running your code locally or in a VM, you'll probably need a more powerful machine.

I'd recommend at least 2-4 cores and 8GB of RAM. At the very least you'll be running a web browser with 8000 StackOverflow tabs open, a bloated IDE and a terminal emulator, so you'll want something that doesn't lag under that load.
>>
>>58145564
>>58145621
you can also do this if you need to traverse more than 1 (potentially nested) direcotry
find . -name '*.mkv' -exec 'ffmpeg -i {} -c:v copy -c:a copy {}.mp4;'

you will have to wrangle with the extension a bit with something like sed to replace mkv with mp4
but i don't know sed well enough to give you anything off hand

Online courses will only show you the basics. Once you understand them, find some project to work on (just ask in DPT for the rolling projects chart), and choose something that you might want to do, hopefully non-trivial.

As a programmer you solve problems. If you can't solve the problem of making a basic calculator, go back to the basics and keep learning.

A friend of mine is down on his luck and I want to build him a computer for Christmas. Right now he's stuck with some shitty old HP laptop.

I found this Dell XPS and I have a few questions.

1. Should I trust this OEM cooling loop?

2. The loop was connected to a daughterboard, will I need it if I ditch the loop?

I don't know the history of the computer at all. I added the 660.

thank you for your time.

I'm trying to find the exact stick of RAM I need for a Freescale PowerPC device. Upon boot, I find the following. I've determined I need dual channel 1600Mhz RAM and am pretty sure it needs to be CAS latency of 11 after investigating the board. Am I on the right track?

If you ditch the loop then no, it looks like that daughterboard is just some kind of weird power extension. Probably a weird design thing due to the board layout and they didnt want to string cables all over.

>Do I need a dedicated receiver in order to decode the dolby/dts signal or will the surround sound speakers do it automatically?

Depends on the speaker. If your speaker doesn't have digital input and DD/DTS decoder, you need a player device (like a PC with 5.1 sound card or a dvd/br player with 6 channel analog output) to supply it the analogue signal.

If you don't have one, there are digital-to-analog sound converters available, they usually use coaxial or optical input.

Reposting from last thread. I'm looking into upgrading my laptop's OS SSD. I went through the wiki page (https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Storage_devices#Solid_State_Drive)
From what I understand, it's a question of picking an SSD that has the same connector as my current one (mSATA), a decent flash memory type and comes from a model series that have received good reviews. Then I need to buy an SSD enclosure and clone the OS SSD into the new one.

Is this correct or am I missing anything?
Currently I'm looking at getting the Samsung 850 EVO mSATA 500GB SSD for my current 128 Gb SSD.

I have a mobo based wifi adapter that uses this weird Asus antenna. My mobo is the Z87 Pro, by the way. Anyways, how reliable are these? Only that PC suffers from these sporadic ping problems that have been plaguing me, so is it likely that I need a wifi card?

Also, can "using too much bandwidth" actually fuck up an Internet connection? I called my ISP about the crappy uptime of my service and they said just that.

I haven't launched ePSXe in ages, as such I don't really remember how to use it.

When I launch an ISO, how do I get back to the ePSXe settings? Closing the window the ISO is running on doesn't seem to do anything, and I have to go to task manager to close the ISO itself.
I'm sure there's a way to access the settings as the game is running but it just disappears

I’ve used SumatraPDF for a pretty long time (more than 5 years) and liked it (and still do) but recently found out that it has some security issues (looks like one of the devs abandoned it or something, the main dev still updates git though), is it true? Which PDF reading software will you recommend then? Is PDF.js in Firefox with NoScript good/more secure?

WHAT THE FUCK AM I DOING WRONG?

Just downloading a game from steam, my connection speed used to top out at 11mbps constant, never went below that.

Now I'm lucky to get 7mbps through steam with frequent dips, I have touched nothing when it comes to my router and my wireless adapter, this started happening a couple of weeks ago. All my other devices are fine and don't have their speed cut in half, it's just my main pc.

I restarted my router many times and it doesn't fix the problem. I'm still on 5ghz ac and I've even tried n too, but still no change

PLEASE HELP

So I got myself an SSD and I'm thinking about installing Windows 10 on it. Any of you guys have any experience with pirated windows 10 + some activator? Do those work as well as they do on Windows 7? Or am I perhaps better off installing Windows 7 first and then upgrading it to 10 via Microsoft's special link for people that "use assistive technologies", basically a free upgrade if you pretend to be a retard.
Anything else I should take into consideration upon installing Windows 10?

Despite nearly being 2017, how many devices and electronics are still on a gigabit connection?

Considering I can stream directly to my TV, I've been looking into specs for both the Ethernet port and the speed of the wireless adapter--assuming it's AC, but lo and behold, manufacturers can't be bothered to label those specifics.

The naturally inclination is to believe that the wired connection would be faster, but considering even the slowest AC is faster than a slow ethernet connection, I'm having second thoughts on what to use.

Greetings,

I need to recover a delete video file off my rooted note 5.

I'm on linux, and the phone has been shut down since the deletion.

I'm reading that it's certainly possible using photorec but it needs the internal storage to be mounted as exactly that, mass storage and not MTP etc. I'm not sure how to do that. Any advice?

Alternately, I can use the android SDK to make a dump of the internal storage and then mount that (usb debugging is enabled), but still, don't know how to do it.

I'm hoping for a shortcut/fast guide for this. Anything?

I've got a raspberry pi zero and a raspberry pi B. My zero is in usb gadget mode set as a serial device and B as a host. I've made a c program to read/write from the respective /dev/ files (ttyGS0 on device, ttyACM0 on host).

I can send data to one pi but not back to the other. I've tested both directions (from device to host and vice-versa) and in each direction the pi that sent the data ends up reading the data it sent. For example, the device sends "d\n" and the host reads "d\n". Then the host sends back "h\n", but the device reads back "d\n" for some reason.

I figured this is really nooby problem and I'm probably just missing something stupidly basic.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <unistd.h>
#include <fcntl.h>

/*
* gcc -o device_rw -DDEVICE serial_rw.c
* gcc -o host_rw serial_rw.c

#define SERIAL_DEVICE "/dev/ttyGS0"
#define SERIAL_HOST "/dev/ttyACM0"

#ifdef DEVICE
#define DEV SERIAL_DEVICE
#else
#define DEV SERIAL_HOST
#endif

void
write_serial (int fd, const char *data, int len)
{
printf("WRITE: %s\n", data);
write(fd, data, len);
}

void
read_serial (int fd, char *data, int len)
{
ssize_t size = read(fd, data, len);
if (size > 0 && size <= len)
printf(" READ: %c\n", *data);
}

int
main (int argc, char **argv)
{
char byte = '\0';
int fd = open(DEV, O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY);

if (fd < 0) {
fprintf(stderr, "Can't open %s\n", DEV);
goto exit;
}

#ifdef DEVICE
printf("host: %s\n", DEV);
read_serial(fd, &byte, 1);
write_serial(fd, "d\n", 2);
#else
printf("device: %s\n", DEV);
write_serial(fd, "h\n", 2);
read_serial(fd, &byte, 1);
#endif

close(fd);
exit:
return 0;

Ajax calls never return what they get from the server since it takes time for the server to answer.
Use promises and then run your stuff when it's finished.

since you're already using jquery
    function loadUserInfo(arr) {
return $.post('../controllers/getusers.php', {users: JSON.stringify(arr)}, function(json, status) {
if (json.ok) {
return json.users;
} else {
return false;
}
});
}

loadUserInfo([something]).done(function(obj) {
// obj is now json.users or false
});

look up how promises work to get more info.

the bag is only anti static on the inside.
Prepare the cooler for the motherboard and it's backplate, put the CPU into the motherboard, put it into the case, then add the cooler.
