IIT: Dumb shit that dumb people do with tech.

I'll start: My brother leaves his laptop cord plugged into the damn thing nonstop, 24/7. His previous two laptops both shat on him and eventually quit working altogether due to battery-related fuckery (refusing to charge, etc). I tried to tell him that the cord shit is probably why, but he won't listen.

I have another one, too:
People who refuse to Google anything and just go straight to pestering friends/family or making pointless forum posts.

> leaves his laptop cord plugged into the damn thing nonstop, 24/7
Is that a charger? What's wrong with that?
>>
>He doesn't have his laptop eternally plugged in without a battery, or with a battery made after the 1980's
Nominal voltage is a good thing you dumdum
>>
>his laptop doesn't have a full-battery automatic charger switch
>>
>>58141168
cd ..

cd ..

cd ..
>>
>>58141300
I'll give OP the benefit of doubt and assume he means that the battery dies because it is never discharged (this can actually damage a battery over a very long period of time).

Leaving the charger connected obviously shouldn't matter unless you bought some kind of weird chink piece of shit.
>>
nice b8 thread
>>
>>58141356
so?
Do you want me to type cd ../../.. ?
That's even more autistic
>>
>>58141357
can confirm this. repair normie laptops all the time and the majority of them don't have trickle chargers to help preserve battery life. surprisingly, the macbook pro was one of the first machines I saw that could switch to just running off ac power and not charging the battery.
>>
>>58141168
>People who refuse to Google anything and just go straight to pestering friends/family or making pointless forum posts.

and yet you yourself chose not to google "dumb people computer stories" and post your terrible unfunny shit in an already-made reddit thread instead of here

>>58141282
How the fuck can it be good for a battery to be so hot you can fry eggs on it, even when the laptop isn't in use?
Sorry for the newfaggotry, but I just can't see how that could be a crafty thing for a person to do.
>>
>>58141385
Because the battery doesn't get voltage when it's fully charged, the charger essentially switches off
This has been in place literally since the 80's
>>
>>58141379
Every time I unplug my battery while connected to the charger it stays on
And that is my dads 4-color green scale thinkpad from before I was born
>>
>>58141423
just because the power delivery is enough to run the system doesn't mean it's not charging the battery at the same time. put a meter on the terminals between the battery and system while its on and plugged in. i guarantee you will see current coming in.
>>
>>58141385
>How the fuck can it be good for a battery to be so hot you can fry eggs on it
What the fuck are you talking about? I've had my laptop for about 6 years now and I always keep it connected 24/7.
You brother is just retarded.
>>
>>58141376
No, you type ....
>>
>>58141403

It doesn't matter that it's plugged in you fucking retard.

Shut that faggot up
>>
Leaving your laptop plugged in doesn't damage your batteries you morons. op is a faggot and doesn't know any better

I love how this entire thread turned in to talking about laptops being plugged in 24/7
>>
>>58141168
What a great post. You don't even know how current battery technology works yet you bitch about tech illiteracy. And still, you haven't even Googled it. It would be worse for him to store the battery with no charge.
>>
>>58141198
>What's wrong with that?
without exercising the battery (allowing it to charge and discharge) the cells will deplete and the battery's capacity will quickly decline.

I have a friend whose PC is always full of issues, yet he never fixes anything. Browser acting up? Downloads a different one. Music player not working? Listens to music on his phone. Windows 7 forcing update? Lets it do its thing. Windows 10 shits the bed? Installs Ubuntu.
Worst part is he actually has a programming degree.
>>
>be me
>visiting family for the holidays
>bring laptop
>fresh install of KDE Neon
>some stuff is written in Spanish for some reason
>changed locale to en_US, but lock screen is still in Spanish
>this distro is new to me, so I research some fixes
>takes like an hour to find and test different solutions
>finally fix it and brag to my Dad about my accomplishment
>"You wouldn't have that issue if you had a Mac like me"
>tell him my computer is more FOSS compliant than his Mac is
>"What's FOSS?"
>say "It's why you own a Mac"

Fucking macfags. Just because your computer looks great doesn't mean it's better.
>>
>>58143421
>Windows 10 shits the bed? Installs Ubuntu.
Sounds smart to me.
>>
old people and even 30 year olds always need to have it on paper. they aren't showing it to anyone, it's just for them

>I e-mailed it to you
>Can you print it out?

fine until

>here it is
>This one number is wrong.
>okay I changed it.
>Well print it out again
>>
>>58141385
>How the fuck can it be good for a battery to be so hot you can fry eggs on it

The battery is not used if it's charged and if it's plugged in. It is only used if it's not plugged in.

Having it plugged in does not matter for the battery, the battery is just not used.

He's not wrong, anon.
No need to be such a raging homo to your dad because you're a retard who takes an hour to solve simple problems.
>>
Since people here dont have good stories of computer illiterate people ill start with a simple one. My grandmother told me her Waze app wouldnt speak to her. She comes to me saying that no matter what she does the Waze app wont speak the directions to her. I ask her if her iphone is on silent mode (that side tab) she says no. I ask her if the app itself has sound setting of their own, she says idk and hands me her phone. I take one look at it, see that the iphone is on silent mode and i take it off silent. Waze proceeds to speak directions outloud.
>mfw she's been complaining about her waze app being silent for over a week.
>>
I have a friend that has 40 tabs open on chrome at all times.
she doesn't use bookmarks. she has the tabs open all the fucking time. I think about it at night it's really disturbing.

What's the point of FOSS if you're too stupid to use it?
>>
>>58144624
hahahahahahahaha. 40 tabs? how is that a high enough number to bother you?
I dont think i have ever had less than 50 tabs open and most of the time its around 200-300.
>>
>>58144931
Wow man you're so hardcore, you even laughed at him and shit
>>
>>58144973
I wasnt laughing AT him per se, more just thought it was funny thinking 40 tabs was a lot, does anyone else think thats a lot of tabs? obviously im biased because i have a lot more, maybe 40 is a lot to most people.
>>
>>58144624
I have over 300 tabs open right now and bookmarking wouldn't help at all.

Why does it drive you nuts?
i suppose if you dont do much on the computer it makes sense not having many tabs, im always doing tons of shit at the same time (work shit, uni shit, game shit, shit posting, youtube, porn etc) so i have a million tabs open.
plus now i have 16 jigglypuffs of RAM so i dont need to exit shit, where i would have exited something before and then just gone back to it later if i wanted it, i can now just leave it open.
>>
I have another for plugged in laptop cords. Both parents almost always have the fucking charger getting pulled at like right angles to where it plugs, either because they pull the laptop too far or the charger is caught on something. i have pointed it out to them b ut no matter how many times i do the next time i see them its getting fucking mangled again.

Also my retarded sister has cracked like a dozen phone screens and never fucking bothers to get a case or screen protector even when i tell her she should
